A statement presenter for an auto-mated teller machine includes a pair of up-per belts (30) and a pair of lower belts (32). A paper stop (28) is mounted on a frame assembly (40). Cooperating arm members (42, 52) are operable to move the upper belts downwardly as the paper stop is moved upwardly and vice versa. In oper-ation, the upper belts are moved upwardly while said paper stop is moved downwardly and a stack of papers (12) is accumulated. After accumulation of the stack, the pa-per stop is moved upwardly as the upper belt moves downwardly to engage the stack. Thereafter, the stack is moved outward to an exit slot (32) where the stack may be taken by a customer. A device for conveying product stacks of widely differing thicknesses includes counteracting belt conveyors which are each defined by supported operating strands. At least one of the belt conveyors is adjustable relative to the other such that the stack receiving space therebetween is adjustable as a function of the thickness of the stacks to be transported. The spacing adjustment permits variation of the gap in which the stacks are clamped at either of the receiving or discharge end regions of the apparatus. In a preferred device, the upper belt conveyor includes a swivel frame from which a plurality of resiliently biased pressure rollers are supported. Actuators, responsive to sensed stack thickness, produce tilting of the swivel frame about an axis which is itself movable in a plane oriented transverse to the direction of stack movement.

In one embodiment, an upper and lower set of ramps (37, 76) are arranged such that while one set of ramps is retracted, the other set of ramps is interposed in the sheet feeding path (24), so that sheets can selectively be "over" ar "under" accumulated.

An improved sheet accumulator for stacking serially fed sheets transported on a paper path. The accumulator includes a guide deck. Above the guide deck, a plurality of parallel belts are positioned to provide a driving force for sheets on the deck. Within the accumulator, a ramp apparatus is positioned across the paper path whereby sheets driven by the belts on an upstream portion of the accumulator deck are driven over the ramp apparatus and deposited in an accumulating region of the accumulator deck on a downstream side of the ramp apparatus. Preferably, snap-down belts are provided between ramp structures snap transported sheets quickly into place on the stack and to hold them there. Sheets are stopped by an accumulator stop mechanism located at a downstream end of the accumulating region that prevents movement of sheets by the belts while sheets for an accumulation are being collected. When an accumulation is completed, the accumulator stop mechanism allows sheets to be transported from the accumulating region. Preferably the guide deck and ramp are adjustable for different sized sheets.

Stop rollers (152, 156) are provided for selectively stopping futher advancement of accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location and for pulling the accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location to advance the sheet articles from the accumulator apparatus.

In this way, where the sheets of a batch are different, the visual attribute sensor can be used to verify that a sheet of a batch has visual characteristics matching those of the expected sheet at that ordinal position in the batch. This assists in ensuring a batch is not faulty. In a related method of verifying batches of sheets, for each sheet at a given ordinal position in each batch a visual attribute measure for at least an area of the sheet is obtained. A comparison is made of the visual attribute measure with a stored visual attribute measure. Each batch is selectively verified based on this comparison.

A system and method for accumulation of media invention includes a series of upper and lower transport belts for feeding media seriatim along a path of travel. An accumulator pocket is positioned between the upper and lower drive belts along the path of travel. An upper and a lower accumulator ramp is positioned adjacent the accumulator pocket are moveable between a first position and a second position. The first accumulator ramp position is such that the lower ramp is positioned to engage media moved seriatim along the path of travel to guide the media to form a forward accumulation of media in the accumulator pocket. The upper accumulator ramp second position is such that the upper accumulator ramp is positioned to engage media moved seriatim along the path of travel to guide the media to form a reverse accumulation of media in the accumulator pocket. One or more rollers can be mounted to cooperate with the lower accumulator ramp and one or more rollers can be mounted to cooperate with the upper accumulator ramp to reduce forces which would tend to cause previously assembled media collations to shear apart during transport into the accumulator pocket. The upper and lower accumulator ramps may also be positioned to enable transport of media through the system without the accumulation of media in the accumulation pocket.

An accumulator apparatus and method are provided for accumulating sheet articles. The accumulator apparatus includes an upper belt system (4B) and lower belt system (LB) operative for advancing sheet articles in seriatim manner therebetween. Guide rollers (42, 46) are provided at the entrance of the sheet articles between the upper and lower belt systems for guiding the sheet articles therebetween without pinching. Nip rollers (62, 66) are provided downstream from the entry guide rollers for pulling sheet articles into the accumulator apparatus between the guide rollers and the nip rollers. A ramp system (82, 82A) operative for deflecting advancing sheet articles is provided downstream from the nip rollers. Sheet articles deflected by the ramp assembly can then be accumulated in an accumulation location where the lower belt system is maintained in a spaced-apart position below the accumulation location such that the lower belt system cannot contact or mark sheet articles accumulated therein. Stop rollers (152, 156) are provided for selectively stopping futher advancement of accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location and for pulling the accumulated sheet articles from the accumulation location to advance the sheet articles from the accumulator apparatus.

The collector further has a first sensor device connected to the control device which sends an activation signal to the stop unit when a sheet of a next set to be formed overlaps a set already formed at the stop unit.

A lower-side conveying unit makes up at least part of a bottom of the stacking unit, and imparts force to a lower side of a sheet stacked on the stacking unit so as to move in the lengthwise direction. An elevating unit elevates at least an end portion of the lower-side conveying unit on a side near to the loading unit to at least three stages of a lower stage that is appropriate in a case in which the handled sheet length is a first length that is shorter than the distance from the loading unit to a discharge unit, a medium stage that is appropriate in a case in which the handled sheet length is a second length that is longer than the first length, and an upper stage that is appropriate in a case in which the sheet is to be discharged. An upper-side conveying unit faces the lower-side conveying unit, and imparts force to an upper side of the sheet nipped between itself and the lower-side conveying unit that has been moved to the upper stage by the elevating unit, so as to move in the lengthwise direction. A stopper protrudes above the lower-side conveying unit disposed at the lower stage by the elevating unit, and a downstream-side end portion of the sheet having the first length in the feeding direction thereof is abutted thereat.
