SHEET FEEDING A floating feed device is adapted to be engaged by the top sheet in a rising stack and to feed the sheet downstream. The mount for the feed device is articulated, and the device includes a vacuum chamber and horizontal drive rollers. A narrow slot is formed between a guide roller of the feed device and a gate which is disposed in the plane of a stack back-up plate and which is vertically movable in said plane. A control is provided to maintain the same slot width, no matter what the articulated position of said guide roller, by automatically adjusting the gate vertically with the guide roller. The feed device is caused to articulate about its mount upon engagement by a rising stack, and such articulation causes a resultant change in the speed of the stack lift drive.

Document sheets are removed seriatim from the bottom of a stack of sheets by an oscillating vacuum feeder having a plurality of spaced tube sections. The feeder delivers a removed sheet to a sheet transport mechanism, which transports it to the platen for copying and then removes the sheet from the platen. The sheet transport mechanism has at least one vacuum belt that passes between two adjacent sections of the feeder and picks up a sheet as it leaves the feeder so that the sheet is tacked to the feeder or the vacuum belt throughout its path of travel from the stack of sheets to the platen. After the sheet is removed from the platen it is returned to the stack of sheets on top of other sheets in the stack. The apparatus is intended for use in conjunction with a rotary feeder having a stack magazine which contains packs of tube sections. The apparatus comprises pressure applying means acting on the tube sections, particularly in the form of laterally pivotally movable pressure-applying fingers, which bear on the uppermost pack of tube sections and are adapted to descend as the stack decreases in height. Actuating means are provided, which when the pressure-applying fingers have reached a position in which they are at a minimum distance from the suction rollers of the rotary feeder impart an outward pivotal movement to said pressure-applying fingers, raise them to an extent which corresponds to the height of the subsequently supplied pack or packs of tube sections, and cause the pressure-applying fingers to bear on said pack or packs. A suction wheel attracts sheets by suction and transports them. The pressing body of the conveyance apparatus includes large diameter portions that press the sheet form medium at plural locations along the width direction, thereby preventing lift-off of the sheet form medium at suction hole unformed regions that are portions where the suction adhesion force to the suction adhesion face of the conveyance body is weaker than in the vicinity thereof. 1. A conveyance apparatus comprising:a conveyance body that suction adheres and conveys a sheet form medium; anda pressing body that presses the sheet form medium against a suction adhesion face of the conveyance body that suction adheres the sheet form medium, the pressing body pressing more strongly portions of the suction adhesion face at a plurality of locations along the suction adhesion face width direction where suction adhesion force is weaker than the pressing body presses other portions.2. The conveyance apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pressing body is a contact pressing body that contacts and presses the suction adhesion face of the conveyance body claim 1 , and the pressing body includes a strong pressing portion that is closer to the conveyance body and a weak pressing portion that is further away from the conveyance body.3. The bundle of objects (1) is carried on conveyors (3), guided by side and end walls (5, 4) and pushed forward by a plate (6) attached to the conveyor. In order to control the pressure on the pile of sheets, a jet of air is directed against the bottom of the range of sheets from a nozzle (11). The jet is guided by side plates (14, 15) and the pressure beneath the sheets is measured by a pressure tapping (16). The more densely packed the bundle of sheets, the less air escapes through the bundle, the higher the pressure sensed at the tapping. The pressure variation is amplified and used to control the motor applying the load via the conveyor and plate (6).

The feeding mechanism (1) presents the front end of a pile of thin objects (2), each resting vertically on the conveyor (5), to the unstacking device (3). The conveyor leads the pile in the direction of a support face (14). A motorised roller (12), holding the pile of thin objects, raises the conveyor (5) onto a support element on the unstacking device. The roller has a surface with a high coefficient of friction. Along the length of the roller are several circumferential grooves into which project teeth from the support element. A spring (16) measures the force applied to the roller by the pile and an automatic device controls advance of the stack as a function of this force. ADVANTAGE - Enables supplying the unstacking device at high speed.

A pile of envelopes stacked on a support surface are removed separately by means of a packing piece (109) projecting on a surface (113) in the zone of the rear edge of the envelope pile (102). An envelope is held by its rear part by a vacuum holder (121), when the rear part of the envelope at the head of the pile is freed from its support, against the packing part. It is held against the surface consecutively to its drive by the removing drum (112). The envelope remover comprises a rotating perforated drum mounted tangential to the support surface. The position of the packing piece is adjustable on its support surface as a function of the envelope length. The perforated drum and/or the support surface are shaped to bend the envelope at the head of the pile in a plane transverse to its attraction under the vacuum.

A leading edge of a leading blank in a series of overlapping envelope blanks is fed at a preselected speed into contact with a rotatably mounted backing roller. The backing roller is mounted in a frame and is selectively adjustable between a first position and a second position. A rotatably mounted segment roller is positioned opposite the backing roller. A pull-out segment is a secured to a radial portion of the backing roller. A plurality of longitudinal slots are provided in the surface of the pull-out segment and are selectively connected to a source of negative pressure. The segment roller is driven at a preselected speed greater than the speed of the series of overlapping blank. In a first mode of operation, the backing roller is adjusted to a first position in the frame so that upon rotation, the pull-out segment frictionally engages the leading edge of the leading blank, separating it from the series of overlapping blanks. In a second mode of operation the backing roller is adjusted to a second position so that the pull-out segment is removed from frictional engagement with the leading edge of the leading blank. Negative pressure is exerted through the longitudinal slots. Upon rotation of the segment roller, the negative pressure secures the leading edge of the leading blank to the pull-out segment separating the leading blank from the series of overlapping blanks.

ABSTRACT A vacuum aperture in a rotatable cam bears on an insert in an insert magazine when the cam is at rest. The vacuum port sucks the insert up against the face of the cam and away from the inserts in the magazine. When the cam is rotated and accelerated to belt speed the insert is stripped out of the magazine and follows the cam as a cam follower into the nip of the transport belts where the insert is transported to a package. stripping the insert as a cam follower allows very high feed speeds to be attained. A single electric motor drives the transport belts and through a single cycle electric clutch the same motor accelerates and rotates the cam. A controller connected to a pulse generator, an electric clutch, a package detector and an insert detector control the device. When a package is detected, the cam is rotated and the insert is stripped from the magazine into the transport belts; a detector located between the transport belts determines if an insert has been stripped from the magazine into the belts. If an insert has not been stripped, a repeated stripping attempt is made. If unsuccessful, a reject gate and an alarm are operated which rejects the package not receiving an insert and sounds an alarm.

Apparatus for forming a stream of uniformly overlapped printed products

A conveying apparatus has a receiving surface (30) for a stack (S) of printed products lying above one another, with a conveying device (22-28) adjoining the receiving surface (30). A vacuum roll (40) rotatable in the conveying direction can act by means of a reduced pressure on the lower side of the printed product in order to produce the desired overlap. The upper tangential plane of the vacuum roll (40) thereby forms a part of the receiving surface (30). The apparatus herein generates a stream of overlapping signatures with the overlap between adjacent signatures in the stream being uniform. Such uniform overlap generally corresponds to the distance from the upstream end of the receiving surface (30) or signature support portion of the apparatus to the vacuum roll (40), and more specifically to the upstream edge of a transverse manifold slot provided in the roll (40). Overlapped signatures are fed by the roll (40) to a downstream nip and blower assembly for being pulled through the nip thereof. The nip is shiftably mounted so as to adjust the size of nip space during running of the apparatus to accommodate for changing thickness of the signature material drawn through the self-adjusting nip at any one time, such as due to varying numbers of signatures being in the nip space or when thicker folded over spines are therein. The precise location at which air from the blowers is directed back upstream against the signatures can be fine tuned and preset as determined by the thickness of the signatures to be run.

The plate feed apparatus of the present invention is comprised of a cylindrical carrier having air inlet holes located in its periphery which are connected to a vacuum source. A stack of plates is fed toward the carrier on a conveyor belt and each time one of the air inlet openings becomes aligned with the plates the front plate in the stack becomes affixed to the carrier and is rotated with it away from the stack. The plates then are released from the carrier for further handling. In order to prevent the plate being carried from striking the remaining plates a gap must be provided between them. In one embodiment this is accomplished by locating rollers, whose axes are parallel with the axis of the carrier, at the periphery of the carrier in positions which are rotationally ahead of the air inlet openings. In a second embodiment a pair of levers are mounted rotatably outwardly of the carrier sides. Rollers contact the levers at the proper rotational orientation of the carrier and rotate them rearwardly so that they contact the plates and move them away from the carrier. A return spring pulls the levers back toward the carrier. In both embodiments the forwardmost plate becomes free to move back toward the carrier as the air inlet opening becomes aligned with the plates. The vacuum then pulls the forward plate away from the stack thereby creating the necessary gap between it and the rest of the plates in the stack.

Sheets or the like in a pile 45 are separated sequentially from the bottom of the pile by two suction rollers 4, 5 to a forwarding roller 19 which has a peripheral speed of from three to six times that of the rollers 4, 5. The sheets are registered on a table 3 by posts 14 having slotted feet secured by bolts 15, and by a front plate 17 which is vertically adjustable towards the rear roller 4. Each suction roller has operative sections spaced apart by peripheral recesses, and each section has a nozzle 7, 8 and protrudes above a plate 6 to engage the sheet pile. Below the plate 6, each roller is covered by a shell 13. The driven roller 19 below the roller 4 co-operates with a pair of rollers 34, and two pairs of rollers 32 co-operate with the suction roller 4. Two pairs of rollers 40 and 41 are pivoted about a shaft 37 by a common spring 39 to engage, respectively, the roller 19 and a pair of large discs 22 secured to a shaft 21. The rollers 4, 5, 9 and discs 22 are all driven by a toothed belt 26, and the peripheral speeds of the roller 19 and the discs 22 are preferably four times that of the rollers 4, 5. Metal guides 28, 29 support the separated sheets to ensure that their front ends are nipped by the rollers 41 against the discs 22, and each disc has an arcuate sheet guide 43 spaced therefrom. To enable the sheets to be rapidly accelerated by the roller 19, the periphery of the suction roller 4 is partially recessed opposite the rollers 32, and the latter have limited movement towards the roller 4. When a sheet enters the gap 44 between the guides 43 and the discs 22 it is slowed down by bushes or the like until one of a number of pusher means 42, spaced around the discs, engages the rear end of the sheet: thus the sheets are fed away from the discs at evenly spaced-apart distances.

A sheet separating and feeding apparatus has a separating device and a vacuum-attracting device to separate and feed sheets one by one from piled sheets. The separating device includes a compressed air plenum chamber, and main nozzles, first auxiliary nozzles and second auxiliary nozzles which are provided on the compressed air plenum chamber for causing air to blow to an upper portion of the piled sheets to separate the uppermost sheet from the remaining sheets. The vacuum-attracting device includes a vacuum chamber and an endless belt having a plurality of through holes provided in a part of the belt. The endless belt rotates around the vacuum chamber, and attracts the uppermost sheet which is separated by the separating device, when the through holes intermittently communicate with a negative pressure in the vacuum chamber. The endless belt is driven it different speeds according to the rotational positions of the through holes, such that the rotational speed of the belt is increased until the belt reaches a position for attracting a next sheet after it has fed the uppermost sheet.
