Empty, flat folded storage bags which may be valve bags are prepared for filling with a flowable material, by seating and stacking a plurality of the bags on a fixed elevation base within a chamber of a bag holding magazine assembly, the resulting stack defining an initial stack rising from a lowermost one the bags on the base to an uppermost one of the bags. In a first cycle of operation, all but the lowermost bag is raised away from the base, the raised bags defining a depleted stack of bags. Then, while the depleted stack remains raised, the lowermost bag is removed from the chamber through a chamber outlet opening. Then, the depleted stack is lowered to seat a new lowermost bag on the base to complete first cycle. The cycle is repeated for each lowermost bag. Each bag removed from the magazine chamber may be conveyed to a bag pick-up position located away from the magazine assembly and, from there, automatically picked with a carrying tool located at the end of a robotic arm and transported to a bag filling station for filling with the flowable material. In the case of valve bags, the valve may be opened by the carrying tool at the time of pick-up.

The lift plate is driven to increase a first inclination angle in response to a decrease in a residual amount of the paper placed on the lift plate. The first inclination angle indicates an angle of inclination of the lift plate with respect to a horizontal plane. A second inclination angle indicating an angle of inclination of the actuator with respect to the horizontal plane increases in response to an increase in the first inclination angle. The actuator increases or decreases a transmitted light quantity along with an increase in the second inclination angle. The photosensor detects the transmitted light quantity. The controller calculates the residual amount of the paper on the basis of the transmitted light quantity.

A method for removing a substantially planar work piece ( 11 ) from the top of a stack ( 10 ) of work pieces comprises the steps of gripping the work piece ( 11 ) on a top surface of the work piece, lifting the gripped work piece, pre-separating the work piece from the stack by introducing a separator element ( 43 ) in between the lifted work piece and a neighboring work piece underneath the lifted work piece ( 11 ) and gripping and removing the pre-separated work piece ( 11 ) by a transport device. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a gripper ( 33 ) for gripping the work piece ( 11 ), the gripper ( 33 ) being movable in a vertical direction for lifting the gripped work piece ( 11 ), a separator element ( 43 ) being movable in a horizontal direction to be introduced in between the lifted work piece ( 11 ) and a neighboring work piece underneath the lifted work piece ( 11 ) and a transport device for gripping and removing the pre-separated work piece ( 11 ). The method and apparatus allow for fast and reliable removal of substantially planar work pieces from the top of a stack.
