A wire cable is exposed to flashes and the exposed image is detected on at least one lay length or a multiple of the lay length and monitored for changes in the image. Preferably, the respective repetition of the same outer stranded wire of the traveling wire cable is detected in the same location and every repetition or every other repetition or every third repetition is used for triggering the flash. In another embodiment, a picture is taken of a large portion of the wire cable using a specialized camera and the image is split up, into recurring units of length that correspond to the size of a lay length or a multiple of the lay length and the successive units of length are compared and inspected for changes in the image.

Systems and methods may be used to monitor the integrity of a belt of an elevator system. Many buildings nowadays do not have the luxury of being able to regularly take an elevator system out of service to perform a giant magneto-resistance (GMR) scan of an entire length of the belt from which an elevator car is suspended. One method to avoid this inconvenience involves performing GMR scans of segments of the belt during the course of everyday passenger traffic and compiling data associated with different segments into a complete GMR profile for the belt. To determine whether the belt contains an irregularity, the GMR profile may then be compared to one or more baseline GMR profiles that were acquired previously, ideally at a time when the belt was known not to contain any irregularities. 1. Methods and devices detect a deterioration state of a load bearing capacity in an elevator suspension member arrangement having several suspension members, such as belts, including electrically conductive cords incorporated into an elastomer material. The invention relates to a method for inspecting quality and/or condition of an elongated composite member, which is a load bearing member of a rope of a hoisting apparatus, such as an elevator, or a precursor of such a load bearing member, the method comprising providing an elongated composite member; and changing the temperature of said elongated composite member by heating or cooling said elongated composite member via a flank thereof; and scanning said elongated composite member from a lateral side thereof with a thermal imaging device after said changing of the temperature; and creating thermographic images of said elongated composite member. 1.
