ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A self propelled forklift vehicle having a frame formed by two spaced parallel longitudinal frame members and a rear transverse frame member. The fork carriage is movable forwardly and rearwardly on the longitudinal frame members, along the path of the machine, and carries a fork tower and forks. The forks can be forced below the vehicle to raise the vehicle up beneath the rear of a trailer for trans-port. The vehicle's rear wheels, which steer and drive the vehicle, are closely spaced and tiltable from side to side to allow for rough terrain, with the operator seat and motor on opposite sides thereof to balance each other. A manually operated split pulley drive allows creeping of the vehicle at a closely controlled low speed. The fork tines include erectable rollers to support part of the vehicle weight when the forks carry a forwardly extended load, to prevent tipping. A front gate causes discharge of the contents of a pallet onto the ground when the fork carriage is retracted. An automatic centering mechanism returns the rear driving wheels to either front driving or rear driving position as selected by the operator.

A self-propelled, side loading vehicle comprises a chassis supported on front and rear pairs of wheels and having three box-shaped sections separated by two transversely elongate clear ways extending from one side of the chassis to a rigid frame along a side of the chassis opposite the one side. A load-bearing assembly is supported by the upper section of each mast member and comprises an outwardly extending bracket connected to a roller chain, the chain extending about a powered sprocket for raising and lowering the bracket connected to the chain. The bracket has a transversely extending, horizontal roller for supporting a load.

The vehicle's rear wheels, which steer and drive the vehicle, are closely spaced and tiltable from side to side to allow for rough terrain, with the operator seat and motor on opposite sides thereof to balance each other. A manually operated split pulley drive allows creeping of the vehicle at a closely controlled low speed. The fork tines include erectable rollers to support part of the vehicle weight when the forks carry a forwardly extended load, to prevent tipping. A front gate causes discharge of the contents of a pallet onto the ground when the fork carriage is retracted. An automatic centering mechanism returns the rear driving wheels to either front driving or rear driving position as selected by the Operator.

The frame can turn on an angle of at least 180, preferably 360, degrees. The hoist (5) has two separately operable lifting frames (6,7) each vertically movable by means of a lifting cylinder. Support arms (11,12), positioned on the lifting frames, point in opposite directions. The lifting frames are separately movable along the rotary frame (2) on one support (8) and are driven by separate drive mechanisms. The support has rails on or rollers for guiding the lifting frames the tops, preferably, of which have cross arms possessing rollers running along the guide rails.

In a side loading lift truck in which the mast assembly is movable transversely of the truck on guide rails in a recess in the chassis, means are provided for projecting the mast section supporting the lifting carriage beyond the side of the truck. As shown in Fig. 1, the mast 2 is connected by pivoted links 3, 4 to a mast 1, which is movable on guide rails in the recess, and the mast 2 is projected and retracted relative to the mast 1 by a double-acting hydraulic ram 13. In a modification (not shown), the forks 16 are connected to the lifting carriage on the mast 2 by a reach mechanism. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the mast assembly 17 is provided at each side with rollers 19 engaging in a channel 20 of a guide member 21 which is provided with a flange 22 adapted to co-operate with rollers 23 on the sides of the recess 18. In operation, the mast assembly 17 is first traversed along the guide members 21 to a position adjacent the open end of the recess and the guide members 21 are then extended carrying the mast assembly with them. Rollers 24, 27, engaging a flange 26 of the guide member 21 and a flange 28 secured to the side of the recess, are secured to the mast assembly 17 and guide member 21 respectively to combat the tendency for the sides of the recess to splay apart when the mast assembly is fully extended.

A hydraulic steering actuator system for a forklift with front and rear sections includes a hydraulic steering motor. The forklift front section includes a mast mounting a pair of fork blades and a pair of wheels. The forklift rear section mounts a pair of drive wheels. The forklift front and rear sections are connected by an articulated connection with a vertical rotational axis. The steering actuator motor driveshaft extends along the vertical rotational axis. First and second actuator mounting brackets are connected to the forklift front and rear sections respectively. One of the mounting brackets includes upper and lower locking assemblies locking the hydraulic steering motor driveshaft whereby torque applied to the steering motor is transmitted to the articulated connection for turning the forklift front section relative to the forklift rear section. The range of motion is preferably 180°-205° for accommodating side-loading operations from relatively high storage shelves.

A machine for handling heavy components in a heavy equipment environment. In an example implementation, the machine includes a truck having at least two front wheels and at least one rear wheel. A outrigger portion extends forward from the truck. The front wheels are attached at a forward end of the outrigger portion. A mast extends vertically from a track extending forward from the truck on a base of the outrigger portion. The mast is movably extendable or retractable along the track. A carriage is mounted on the mast and configured to move vertically on the mast. A pair of forks are mounted on the carriage to move vertically when the carriage is controlled to move. A personnel platform is mounted on the carriage independent of the mounting of the forks on the carriage. A remote control panel is configured to override a cab control panel under operator control. The remote control panel includes a plurality of controls for moving the carriage and for extending or retracting the mast.
