HEATING GLASS SHEETS

Abstract A method of heating a glass sheet which is moved on a conveyor which contacts one face of the sheet. In order to reduce the contact between the contacted surface of each glass sheet and to keep the leading edge of each sheet clear of the conveyor, anticlastic bending of the sheet is caused, and the stable anticlastic shape of the sheet is determined such that the sheet is arched away from the conveyor transversely of the sheet with respect to the conveying direction and with the sheet having a reverse curvature along its longitudinal extent so that the leading and trailing edges of the sheet are bent away from the conveyor. Anticlastic bending of the sheet is caused by producing a temperature differen-tial between the central area and at least a part of the periphery of the sheet, for example, by heating said part of the periphery.

Methods for heat treating glass sheets ( 13 ) are disclosed in which the sheets ( 13 ) are held in a vertical orientation in a treatment container ( 15 ) during the heat treatment. The container ( 15 ) includes a support system for the glass sheets ( 13 ) that comprises a bottom support ( 17 ), two side supports ( 19 a, 19 b), and a top support ( 21 ). The sheets ( 13 ) are slid into the container ( 15 ) without contact between their side edges ( 23 a, 23 b) and the side supports ( 19 a, 19 b). The top support ( 21 ) is then slid onto the tops of the sheets ( 13 ) without contacting the sheets' top edges ( 25 ). In certain embodiments, flushing air which has been HEPA filtered and pre-heated is passed through the container ( 15 ) during the heat treatment. Apparatus for practicing the methods of the invention are also disclosed.

Method of, and article produced by suspending a sheet or lamina of glass vertically, by placing the sheet within a flat sack of refractory fabric, suspending the sheet by supporting the sack at or along its upper edge while heating it to a desired or softening temperature. After heating, the sheet suspended by its sack is transported to a position between opposing press platens, which are then forced together to temper the sheet and/or to conform it to the shape of the platens. Both platens may be rigid and complementally curved. Or one platen may be of rigid convexly curved form and the other a vertically disposed hammock of refractory fabric yieldingly stretched and operable to force the heated sheet into conformity with the rigid platen. The invention is of particularly utility in the production of laminated glass sheets as for automobile windshields, wherein the rigid platen may be a first lamina, originally flat, heated and suspended within its sack, is pressed against the rigid platen and is shaped thereby, then removed from the sack and adhesively secured to the first lamina, to complete the laminated sheet.

A convection compatible closed cassette and method are described herein where the closed cassette is used to heat treat (compact) one or more glass sheets in a uniform manner and in a clean environment. In the preferred embodiment, the closed cassette includes multiple enclosed sections that are supported by a mounting structure in a manner where there is an open passageway between the major surfaces of each pair of the supported enclosed sections. And, each enclosed section is designed to hold and support multiple glass sheets in a manner where there is a space between the major surfaces of each pair of the supported glass sheets. In operation, the closed cassette is placed into an oven (e.g., lehr, batch kiln) so that hot/cold unfiltered air can flow across the major surfaces of each enclosed section and uniformly heat/cool the enclosed glass sheets.
