A glass precursor gel comprising:{'sup': '3', 'a bulk amorphous oxide-based matrix having an inorganic network of primary constituent oxides, the primary constituent oxides comprising 30 mol % to 90 mol % silica and one or more of the following: (A) 0.1 mol % to 25 mol % of one or more alkali oxides in sum total, (B) 0.1 mol % to 25 mol % of one or more alkaline earth oxides in sum total, (C) 1 mol % to 20 mol % boric oxide, (D) 5 mol % to 80 mol % lead oxide, or (E) 0.1 mol % to 10 mol % aluminum oxide; wherein the bulk amorphous oxide-based matrix is homogenously chemically to mixed and, further, wherein the glass precursor gel has a density of less than 2.0 g/cm.'}2. The glass precursor gel set forth in claim 1 , wherein the primary constituent oxides are silica claim 1 , sodium oxide claim 1 , and calcium oxide.3. An electronic signal processing system incorporates a memory in which a motion profile and force limits are stored and which receives through each cycle a feedback signal relating to the transducer position of the plunger and from the pressure sensors the pressure on opposite sides of the piston and which produces control signals for a solenoid driven proportional pneumatic valve in accordance with a repetitive algorithm which takes account of (a) the displacement of the plunger from the motion profile, (b) the velocity of the plunger as derived from the rate of change of its position, and (c) the force exerted on the plunger as derived from the pressure difference across the piston. In this way the valve supplies air to the piston and cylinder device to cause the plunger to move from rest at a first position, for a first period of time in a manner limited by the motion profile. Thereafter a first force limit is applied to the plunger. Movement during a second period of time is controlled in a manner limited by the reduction from the first force limit to a second force limit and during a third period of time is limited by the second force limit.

The machine has several sections, each consisting of three statios (A,B,C) for (A) moulding a blank from a gob, (B) reheating the blank; and (C) final moulding of the blank. Transfer devices move the blank between stations (A-C) and then onto an exit plate; and the transfer devices used between stations (AB) and stations (BC) operate independently. The time between the releasing of the blank in station (B) and its clamping for transfer to station (C) is adjustable without influencing the basic cycle time which depends on the moulding cycles (B,C). The transfer of a blank from station (B) to station (C) is pref. synchronised with the transfer of the moulded prod. or bottle from station (C) onto the exit plate. The heating time used in station (B) is easily adjusted.

GLASSWARE FORMING MACHINE OF THE I. S. TYPE FOR UPRIGHT PRESS AND BLOW PROCESS ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE The individual section of a Hartford I. S. type machine is modified to permit forming the parisons in an upright orientation, and also for transferring the upright parisons from the blank to the blow side of the section without disturbing this upright orientation. The pressing plungers at the blank station are mounted for movement toward and away from the upwardly open blank mold cavities, and each blank mold cavity is defined in part by partible neck ring molds, in part by a lower solid blank or body mold, and finally by intermediate partible mold sections which engage the upper neck ring molds and also the lower body mold. These intermediate mold sections at the blank side of the machine are mounted on the existing blank mold holder arms. The neck ring molds are provided in a structure which is pivotally supported at the free ends of the two neck ring arms, and while these arms are conventionally mounted for pivotal movement in the neck ring mechanism, means is also disclosed for restricting these neck ring structures to so support the parisons that each remains in an upright orientation during transfer from the blank to the blow side of the machine section.

The drive for the rams comprises a first cam track arranged stationarily about the axis of the turntable and a roller follower for each ram to move the latter toward and away from the respective mold during movement of the followers along the first cam track and the drive for the tongs comprises a second cam track also arranged stationarily about the turntable axis and a roller follower for each tongs to move the latter between open and closed positions during movement of the roller followers of the tongs along the second cam track. In order to relieve the cam tracks and the followers from excessive strains, to reduce wear of these elements and to make the connection between the follower and the movable elements operated by the same as light as possible to reduce mass forces during fast operation of the machine, a servomotor is arranged between each of the followers and the element moved thereby. Each servomotor is controlled so that the main forces for moving these elements are provided by the respective servomotors.

The roto-translational motion for the extraction of the plunger is generated by: a linear actuator (30) acting on the plunger (6), thereby effecting a linear movement of the plunger (6) along said longitudinal axis (X-X), a guide body (14) wherein the plunger (6) is moved relative to the guide body (14) along said longitudinal axis (X-X), and a helical guide (16, 17) coaxial to the longitudinal axis (X-X) and being provided between said guide body (14) and said plunger (6) and transforming said linear movement effected by said linear actuator (30) on said plunger (6) into said roto-translational motion of said plunger (6).

Abstract A method of monitoring a glassware forming process Infra-red detector means (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 36) is used to provide a signal corresponding either to the presence or absence of hot glass at a selected position or positions in the machine. The signal is examined at a selected time in the cyclic process of the machine to ascertain whether the signal corresponds to the expected condition of the infra-red detector means (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 36) at the selected time, and emergency action is initiated in the event that the signal does not correspond to the expected condition of the infra-red detector means (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 36). The method may be used to ascertain whether the correct number of parisons has been removed from a blank station of the machine, to detect whether parisons formed at the blank station have a length exceeding a predetermined length, or to detect whether the correct number of articles of glassware have been removed from a shaping station of the machine at which the parisons formed at the blank station (A) are shaped.

A glass-blowing machine, according to the parent Specification, in which a charge of plastic glass is delivered to each table of a rotatable series, the tables each having an aperture which is obturated whilst the plastic glass is pressed to thin it over the table so that, when the obturator is removed, the glass sags through the aperture to permit a blowing-head to blow the glass into a split rotary mould which is appropriately brought into position, is provided with improvements in the means for obturating and thinning, rotating the moulds, cooling the tables and moulds, positioning the parts relatively to one another and removing the finished workpiece. As shown, the table 51 is pivoted on an axis 81 so that when it is raised by a cam 84, the part of the workpiece 85 projecting above the table is removed by a circular cutter 53, the workpiece being thus freed to fall over the discharge shoot 87. The empty table is then restored to horizontal position preparatory to receiving a charge of plastic glass which is fed by a curved shoot through an opening in the side of a cup 110 which is concentric with the aperture in the table and locates the glass accordingly. The obturator 58 is presented to the aperture by pneumatic pressure in a cylinder 88, the pneumatic control being effected by a slide valve 91, the slide rod 90 of which is operated by a bell crank 60, 60a and a stop 98. The obturator 58 and its actuating-means are mounted on an arm 12 carried by a ring 11 revoluble on the central vertical column of the machine, the arm being supported at its free end by a roller 73 and being normally pulled by a counterweight 103 so that it rests against the buffer 97.
