In order to achieve reproducible operating parameters of the shaping process of an I.S. glassware forming machine, a central control of all blowing and cooling air flows is proposed, in which in accordance with sections a volume flow of the cooling air including the inlet-side and outlet-side temperatures thereof are measured by means of a measuring device ( 51, 52 ) and a heat loss which is associated with the section is ascertained. The heat thus removed in sections is compared with standard values, wherein in the event that tolerance zones are exceeded a variation of the volume flow is initiated by the actuation of restrictors ( 53, 54 ). All of the sections of the glassware forming machine which are intended for passage of cooling air are monitored in this way, namely on the basis of a determinable heat loss, so that uniform cooling conditions, which are adapted to a mathematical model, and in this respect a reproducible product quality are achieved.

Methods and apparatus for forming glass articles such as bottles and the like utilize flows of pressurized cold cryogen vapor that are introduced into mold cavities which are being used to mold glass articles. The cold cryogen vapor hastens cooling and solidification of the articles so that the time during which the articles must be retained in their molds is significantly reduced. Reductions in mold retention times enable the apparatus to be operated at increased speeds, whereby its productivity is significantly increased. Productivity increases of 15 percent and often more can be achieved at relatively low expense. The use of cold cryogen vapor introduction into mold cavities is applicable to a variety of glass molding techniques including molding and blow molding. Cold cryogen vapor introduction can be used in staged molding procedures, for example in operations where a hollow blank or parison of glass is first press-formed in a roughing mold, and is then blow-molded in a finishing mold to assume its final form; in such a staged procedure, cold cryogen vapor introduction may be used in either or both of the roughing and finishing stages to expedite solidification and to permit increased productivity. In preferred practice the cold cryogen vapor is nitrogen gas that is released from a container of liquid nitrogen. Cold cryogen vapor may be mixed with flows of cooling and/or blowing gases for delivery with these gases into mold cavities. In preferred practice, cold cryogen vapor is delivered into the mold cavities without being mixed with other flows of cooling and/or blowing gases.

The adapter block has a first block passage for feeding test air to a first inlet of the blowhead for conducting blow air to a parison, and a second block passage for feeding test air to a second inlet of the blowhead separate from the first inlet for conducting finish cooling air. Air is directed from a common source separately to the first and second block passages, and air flow is measured in each path. When air flow through the finish cooling air path is less than a predetermined threshold, or less than a predetermined ratio with respect to the final blow air, this may indicate a need to redrill or otherwise rework the finish cooling passages in the dual-stage blowhead.

A glassware forming machine blowhead arm assembly (12) includes a one-piece blowhead arm body (26) having at least one longitudinal air passage (36) and a plurality of lateral air passages (30-34) connected to the longitudinal passage. A blowhead chuck (44) is removably received in a first end of each lateral passage and a cap (60) is threaded into the second end of each lateral passage spaced from the associated blowhead chuck. A spring (66) is captured in compression between each cap and an associated blowhead chuck biasing the blowhead chuck in a direction out of the lateral passage and away from the cap. In an exemplary embodiment of the disclosure adapted for use in conjunction with so-called isolated finish cooling blowheads, there are first and second longitudinal air passages (28, 36) extending through the blowhead arm body separately from each other, and separate air inputs (18, 22) in the body respectively coupled to the first and second longitudinal passages. Each lateral air passage is separately connected to the longitudinal air passages, and the blowhead chucks have separate air passages for feeding blow air and finish cooling air to a blowhead (54) mounted in the chuck.

SUBSTANCE: the invention is dealt with the field of glass industry, with equipment used for production of glass vessels and more accurately with glass-forming machines of sectional type. The technical result is development of an upgraded glass-forming machine of sectional type, in which a slowing down of operation of the reverse flow valve at transition through it of exhausted air is eliminated and the value of air streams is increased. For this purpose the machine contains a parison mould connected through a line for reverse flow / vacuum with the first exhaust valve and the second valve - for air evacuation. At that the first valve is made with a capability of switching over from an open for exhaust position to a closed position, and the second valve is made with a capability of switching over from a vacuum open position to a position of an open for a reverse flow of air, at which the second valve is connected with the third valve for a reverse flow of air, which is made with a capability of switching over from a closed position for reverse flow of the air into open for the reverse flow of the air position. The unit to control switching of the first, second and third valves into the first closed position, at which the first valve is in the open for exhaust position, the second valve is in open for a reverse flow of air position, the third valve is in a closed position. Then the control switches into the second position for evacuation of the air, at which the first valve is in the exhaust closed position, the second valve is in vacuum open position, the third valve is in a closed position, and at the control switches over into the third position for creation of a reverse flow, at which the first valve is in a closed position, the second valve is in an open for a reverse flow of air position, the third valve is in an open for a reverse flow of air position. Method for molding glass containers

Method for forming glass containers by the blow and blow process in which a parison mold having a plurality of cavities is centrally positioned relative to a pair of blow molds having a plurality of cavities. The parisons are formed with their necks down in the parison mold from a charge of glass delivered to each cavity. Vacuum is applied to the neck area of the mold to form the finish portion of the container. A neck pin is pulled and air under pressure is fed to the interior of the area from which the neck pin is drawn to expand the glass within the parison mold at a continuous rate until the glass within the parison mold comes in contact with a baffle which closes the upper end of the parison mold. The parison mold is then opened and the parisons are transferred alternately from the parison mold to the blow molds where they are expanded into final shape. During the transfer of the parisons from the parison mold to the blow mold, air under pressure is maintained within the hollow interior of the parison. The parison transfer is carried out by the neck molds with parison counterblow pressure delivering means as well as puff or low pressure means for either puffing the parison during its invert movement from the parison mold to the upright position at the blow mold or to help sustain the parison against collapse during invert. The ability to apply puffing air to the parison during transfer is a significant step in the forming process.

Apparatus for testing. sir flow through a dual-stage blowhead that includes an adapter block with a blowhead cup for releasably receiving a dual-stage blowhead. The adapter block has a first block passage for feeding test air to a first inlet of the blowhead for conducting blow air to a parison, and a second block passage for feeding test air to a second inlet of the blowhead separate from the first inlet for conducting finish cooling air. Air is directed from a common source separately to the first and second block passages, and air flow is measured in each path. When air flow through the finish cooling air path is less than a predetermined threshold, or less than a predetermined ratio with respect to the final blow air, this may indicate a need to redrill or otherwise rework the finish cooling passages in the dual-stage blowhead.

Both blow-and-blow and press-and-blow plunger mechanisms for use in forming a parison from a gob of fluid glass in a individual section (IS) of a glassware forming machine are fully pneumatically controlled. Plunger and thimble pistons affirmatively position a thimble and a plunger in consistently repeatable positions during loading of the gob, counterblowing or pressing an initial opening in the parison, and transferring the formed parison. No springs or other mechanical components which are prone to cause inconsistencies or failures are employed. The plunger mechanism is preferably suspended from the frame of the IS by a plunger case assembly to avoid the problems associated with a support foot. The plunger case assembly allows the plunger mechanisms to be easily interchanged or replaced, to be adjusted to accommodate different types of operation and sizes and configurations of glass article produced, while still communicating pressurized air to the plunger mechanisms to achieve these effects.

Vertically aligned first (30) and second (32) combined blowhead and takeout mechanisms are provided to sequentially blow glass parisons (P) into containers (C) in a mold set (22) and to transfer blown containers to a deadplate (40) of a glass containing forming machine (20). Each of the combined mechanisms is pivotally suspended about an axis A from a carrier arm (36) that is pivotally attached to an end of an oscillating arm (38), an opposed end of which is pivoted about an axis (B). The axis (B) of each combined blowhead and takeout mechanism is periodically raised and lowered to permit the other combined blowhead and takeout mechanism to oscillate therebeneath, to thereby permit overlapping cycles between the blowhead and takeout mechanisms. Each blowhead and takeout mechanism is provided with a chuck or tong assembly (54) to engage or release each container by its finish (F). Each tong assembly has a plurality of tong elements (74) that are simultaneously moved radially in or out by oscillation of a cam (50) that has a non-circular slot (78) in which a pin (76) carried by each tong element rides.

A method and a machine for the production of hollow glassware articles, by the blow-and-blow, press-and-blow, press-and-blow paste mold and direct-press processes in a glassware forming machine including single or multiple machine sections each having single or multiple-cavity, comprising: forming a parison in an inverted orientation, into a blank mold and a first transferable and open-able neck ring mold held by an inverting apparatus having a first and a second diametrically opposed arms, each arm holding a transferable and open-able neck ring mold; inverting the parison held by the first transferable and open-able neck ring mold, by rotating the first arm 180° to an upright orientation at an intermediate station, while the second arm with a second transferable and open-able neck ring mold is simultaneously placed at the parison forming station; transferring the first transferable and open-able neck ring mold holding the parison in an upright orientation, from the intermediate station, to a blow mold station, by a transference apparatus; releasing the first parison into a blow mold, and turning back the first transferable and open-able neck ring mold empty to the first arm of the inverting apparatus, at the intermediate station to be placed again at the parison forming station by rotating the first arm additional 180°, completing a 360° turn, while the second arm reaches to the intermediate station; blowing the parison into a blow mold to form a finished article; and transferring the finished article in an upright orientation, once the blow mold is opened, by a take out apparatus, to place it at a dead plate or at a carrying conveyor.
