The precursor film is prepared by sequentially applying to the surface of the substrate a polyamine or other cationic polymer, a suspension of metal oxide and then a suitable cross linking agent. The superhydrophilic layer can be applied as a coating to a variety of substrates including metal, glass and ceramic and provides excellent dirt resistance, scratch resistance and antifogging effect. The (meth)allylsilane compound includes a (meth)allylsilyl group-containing alkyl group or a (meth)allylsilylalkyl group-containing aralkyl group that is bonded to an alcohol derivative. In particular this invention relates to a method for preparing a monolayer or thin film with a patterned nanoscopic wetting surface using a ‘sitting’ phase of polymerizable amphiphile, wherein hydrophobic alkyl chains of the amphiphile extend along the supporting surface and the amphiphile molecules align side-to-side, effectively forming a repeating cross-section of bilayer with alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic stripes of a ˜6 nm pitch tunable based on the chain length of the amphiphile. The problem addressed by the present invention is to provide an antifogging coating film having excellent antifogging property, antifogging persistence, persistence of appearance, and elution resistance. The coating film according to the present invention contains a metal oxide (A) and a hydrophilic compound (B); the height of the eluate by a coating film surface elution test is 1.0 μm or less; this test is carried out by placing 10 μL of deionized water on the coating film, allowing the film to stand for 24 hours in a 23° C., 50% RH environment, measuring the eluate height of 20 locations selected randomly within a 10 cm2 range on the coating film surface, and determining the maximum height; and the water contact angle measured after subjecting the coating film to a moisture resistance test by exposure for 24 hours in an 85° C., 85% RH environment followed by standing for one hour in a 23° C., 50% RH environment, is less than 40°. Preferably, the elution level per coating film unit volume by a coating film total elution test is 40 mg/cm3 or less, and this test is carried out by immersing the coating film in 23° C. deionized water for 24 hours, then measuring the weight of the coating film eluate recovered from the deionized water.

The reflective substrate is then heated to a temperature of 48.889°C to 162.778°C during the drying period. In a still another embodiment, an article is coated with the photocatalytic coating and, when the article is soaked in, rinsed by or wetted with water, fatty dirt and contaminants are readily released without resort to a detergent.

The invention relates to a method and compositions for producing a hydrophilic coating on a surface of a solid material. The method comprises a cleaning step and a coating step. The cleaning step may be preceded by an initial cleaning step and it may optionally be succeeded by a preconditioning step prior to the coating step. The cleaning step comprises cleaning and preconditioning a surface of a material by use of a first cleaning fluid composition comprising ceria (CeO 2 ) particles. The coating step comprises treatment by use of a coating fluid composition comprising photocatalytically active nanoparticles of titania (TiO 2 ). An advantage of the method of the invention is that the method may be carried out at temperatures in the range 5 to 50° C. No further heating is required. Thereby, the method may easily be used for treating materials such as windows, furniture, tiles, walls, etc.
