The wetting agent may be a compound of formula R-A-(CH2CH2O)x-CH2CH2OH where R is a hydrocarbon group having 8-18 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group incorporating such a hydrocarbon chain, A is oxygen, sulphur, or an amino, amido, carboxylic ester or thiocarboxylic ester group, and x is 8-20. Other polyoxyalkylene compounds are specified. The compositions are applied to soil or seeds as an aqueous solution or as a powder containing an extender such as peat or kieselguhr.
