1355679 Polymers cross-linked with diepoxides ROHM & HAAS CO 9 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 32297/71 Heading C3B and C3P Mouldable and/or thermoformable viscous to solid polymers are formed by reacting at 20- 80‹ C. a mixture comprising (a) a monomer mixture comprising (i) 40-95 wt. per cent of one or more of styrene, substituted styrenes, and alkyl or cycloalkyl methacrylates, and (ii) 5-60 wt. per cent of at least one α,#- monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and optionally, (iii) up to 5 wt. per cent of one or more other monomers; (b) at least one diepoxide of formula in which R 1 is H, halogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, and the other R's are hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, the amount of diepoxide being such as to provide 0À1-2À0 epoxy groups per carboxylic acid group in (a) (ii); (c) a free radical initiator; and (d) a catalyst for acid-epoxide condensation, e.g. NaOH. In examples, polymerization is effected in bulk in the presence of tert.butylperoxy pivalate, one of two u/v absorbers, n-dodecyl mercaptan or mercaptoethanol as chain transfer agent, and a small amount of NaOH. The monomeres used are as follows:- (i) methyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof with styrene, vinyl toluene or butyl methacrylate, and mixtures of styrene with methyl-, ethylthioethyl-, ethyl- or cyclohexylmethacrylate; (ii) acrylic caid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid or acrylic acid/methacryloxypropionic acid mixture; and (iii) acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate. The products may be moulded, e.g. into sheets or dome-shapes, and cured to give hard, solvent resistance products.

Relatively large amounts of initiator and short reaction times produce high molecular weight copolymers of phenylmaleic anhydride with a monomer such as styrene whereas normally these conditions would be expected to produce low molecular weight copolymers. Additionally, it was found that the molar ratio of phenylmaleic anhydride and comonomers such as styrene should be controlled to about 1:3 to 1:6 to obtain the high molecular weight desired. Limited use of inert solvents is possible.

A method for continuously preparing a heat resistant α-methylstyrene-acrylonitrile copolymer by bulk polymerization, comprising the steps of: a) Continuously charging a mixture of monomers including following materials into a continuous polymerization system with two or more stirred-vessel reactors connected in series: i) 60 to 75% (by weight of Yá-methylstyrene; ii) 25 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile; iii) 5 to 15% by weight of a solvent; and iv) 0.05 to 0.3% by weight of a mixed initiator of an organic peroxide with a multifunctional group and an organic peroxide with a monofunctional group; b) Continuously polymerizing the monomer mixture charged at step a) starting from the first reactor to convert 50 to 70% by weight of total charged monomers into a polymer; and c) transferring reacted liquid containing the polymer from step b) to an evaporator, and then separating the polymer by evaporating unreacted monomers and solvents. Heat resistant α-methylstyrene-acrylonitrile copolymer resins prepared by the method of the present invention are superior in terms of conversion rate, heat resistance and heat stability. Heat resistant ABS resins which contain this copolymer resins exhibit excellent impact strength and processability and low heat discoloration.

The solns. are suitable for sizing paper such in filler; the sizing gives good resistance to alkali and penetration by inks.

In an example, a toluene-soluble odourless, resinate-miscible copolymer was prepd. 140 parts mono-isobutyl maleate were added in 2 hrs. to aq. suspension, after start of polymerisation of 560 parts styrene, at 80 degrees C.
