Disclosed are surfactant-stabilized latex emulsions which can be used as binders in paper coating compositions. Such latex emulsions comprise an interpolymer formed by emulsion polymerizing monomers selected from vinyl esters, e.g., vineyl acetate; ethylene; certain unsaturated mono- and di-carboxylic acid materials such as acrylic acid or maleic anhydride; and certain polyethylenically unsaturated cross-linking co-monomers such as diallyl phthalate. These latex emulsions are stabilized with surfactants which are substantially free of environmentally suspect alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs). The paper coating compositions containing latex emulsion binders of this type exhibit especially desirable coating strength as quantified by the Dry Pick Values (as defined herein) which such compositions provide.

The polymerization initiator has a 10-hour half-life temperature of 70° C. or higher and 100° C. or lower, and the polymerization is conducted by maintaining a temperature within a range of from the temperature of the polymerization initiator contained in the monomer solution to 35° C. below the temperature for one hour or more; and maintaining a temperature higher than the temperature of the polymerization initiator contained in the monomer solution for one hour or more.

The conditions 1 to 3 are as follows: Condition 1: a value calculated according to the formula: {[100−(neutralization degree)−(crosslinking degree)]/100}×[acid value of water-insoluble polymer (A)] is from −30 to 30 mgKOH/g: Condition 2: a value calculated according to the formula: [(neutralization degree)/100]×[acid value of water-insoluble polymer (A)] is from 80 to 180 mgKOH/g; and Condition 3: a value calculated according to the formula: [(crosslinking degree)/100]×[acid value of water-insoluble polymer (A)] is from 80 to 180 mgKOH/g. 2. The resulting copolymer comprises fluorinated units having the formula (R 1 R 2 C-CR 3 F) wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are selected from H and F, and R 3 may be Cl when R 1 and R 2 are F, and corresponding amounts of vinyl units having the formula (H 2 C-CHR x ), wherein R x is selected from --CH 3 and C 2 H 5 . In an alternate and preferred embodiment the copolymer is hydrolyzed so that R x becomes --OH.

Способ получения содержащих сложный виниловый эфир и этилен или этиленово ненасыщенные мономеры сополимеров путем радикальной эмульсионной или суспензионной полимеризации в водной среде при абсолютном давлении в пределах от 5 до 100 бар, отличающийся тем, что по завершении полимеризации реакционную смесь дросселируют с понижением ее абсолютного давления до 0,1-5 бар и путем многоступенчатой фракционированной конденсации с глубоким охлаждением из остаточного газа рекуперируют непрореагировавшие мономеры, при условии, что в первой ступени конденсации конденсируют водяной пар при температуре в пределах от 1 до 5°С, во второй ступени конденсации конденсируют винилацетат при температуре в пределах от -90 до -60°С, а в третьей ступени конденсации конденсируют этилен при температуре в пределах от -140 до -100°С. ! 2. FIELD: chemistry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing aqueous dispersions or powders which are re-dispersible in water. The method of producing protective colloid-stabilised polymers is realised by emulsion polymerisation of one or more vinyl esters of straight or branched alkylcarboxylic acids containing 1-15 carbon atoms with ethylene in a reactor with an external cooling loop, which is equipped with a pump and a heat exchanger, wherein the reaction mixture in the reactor is fed by a pump into a cooled static mixer-heat exchanger with fixed built-in components, and then returned to the reactor. The static mixer-heat exchanger has such parameters where its cooling rate is not less than 50 kW/m 3 of reactor volume. Polymer powder which is re-dispersible in water can be obtained and dried.
