This invention provides aromatic diimines which have imino hydrocarbylidene groups with at least two carbon atoms, and aromatic secondary diamines which have amino hydrocarbyl groups with at least two carbon atoms. Both the aromatic diimines and the aromatic secondary diamines either are in the form of one phenyl ring, or are in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge; each position ortho to an imino group or an amino group bears a hydrocarbyl group. When in the form of one phenyl ring, there are two imino groups on the ring or two amino groups on the ring; the imino groups or amino groups are meta or para relative to each other. When in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge, there is either one imino group or one amino group on each phenyl ring. A process for preparing an aldol ester of the formula (I), wherein at least one carboxylic anhydride of the formula (II) is reacted with at least one aldol of the formula (III) with heating in the presence of a basic catalyst with a pKa of the conjugate acid of at least 8, and the reaction product obtained from the process. The process provides a light-coloured and low-odour reaction product which has a high content of aldol ester content of the formula (I) and can be used, without elaborate purification steps, particularly without overhead distillation of the aldol ester, as a blocking agent for primary amines. The resultant blocked amines have a long storage life together with polymers containing isocyanate groups, and cure rapidly and reliably on contact with moisture to form mechanically high-grade and robust elastomers. 2. A compound of formula (I) having advantageous properties when used as a latent curing agent for compositions containing isocyanate groups, and to compositions containing the compound of formula (I). The compound of formula (I) is odourless, is liquid and has comparatively low viscosity at room temperature and is stable in storage together with isocyanates. It makes possible odourless single-component polyurethane compositions which have good stability in storage, do not produce bubbles when cured in the presence of moisture, and cause no problematic odour emissions, giving a cured elastic material having good mechanical properties, good heat stability, a surprisingly non-adhesive surface and little tendency towards plasticizer migration.

A one-part moisture-curing liquid-applied waterproofing membrane as disclosed includes a polyurethane polymer obtained from at least one polyether polyol and at least one diisocyanate, and an aldimine of the formula (I). The membrane has a long shelf life stability with both aromatic and aliphatic isocyanates, a low viscosity at low solvent content, a sufficiently long open time to allow hand application and cures fast to a solid elastic material of high strength and high elongation. The released aldehyd is non-toxic and low flammable and evaporates quickly out of the membrane causing only minimal odour emission. The membrane has high crack-bridging qualities in a broad temperature range and is easily overcoatable without interlayer adhesion problems, which makes it particularly suitable for roofing applications. 2. The use of an aldehyde mixture containing 70 to 95 wt % of aldehydes of formula (I) and 5 to 30 wt % of alkylbenzene compounds not corresponding to formula (I) as a blocking agent for amines results in odorless, especially economically blocked amines, which at room temperature are typically liquid and have a surprisingly low viscosity. Such blocked amines are particularly suitable as latent hardeners in isocyanate-group-containing compositions. Single-component moisture-curing polyurethane compositions formulated therewith are surprisingly stable in storage, can be used for low-emission applications without odor problems and do not trigger any problems with plasticizer migration. Surprisingly, said compositions even have advantages over corresponding compositions having latent hardeners based on purified aldehydes of formula (I), in particular with respect to viscosity, storage stability and especially strength. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alkylbenzene compounds not corresponding to the formula (I) have a higher boiling point than the aldehydes of the formula (I).3. The coating composition comprises: (a) an isocyanate-reactive component comprising: (a1) at least one polyaspartic ester, and (a2) optionally a polyetheraspartic ester; (b) an isocyanate component comprising: (b1) at least one isocyanate prepolymer having an isocyanate group equivalent of 300 to 1100, and (b2) at least one isocyanate oligomer containing not less than two isocyanate groups, the weight ratio of the isocyanate prepolymer (b1) to the isocyanate oligomer (b2) being from 1:4 to 4:1; (c) a catalyst; and (d) optionally an additive; wherein the coating composition has a molar ratio of isocyanate groups to isocyanate-reactive groups of 1.5:1 to 8:1. The present invention relates to curable compositions comprising at least one specific blocked amine, at least one surface-deactivated polyisocyanate that is solid at ambient temperature and optionally water or a water-producing substance. Compositions of this type are characterized by an extremely high storage stability as long as they are not heated. Hot curing compositions that cure with the action of heat can thus be produced. Heat-activated compositions can also be produced. When heat is applied the latter compositions are not cured but are activated so that they are able to cure under the influence of moisture. The curable compositions are particularly suitable for use as adhesives.

The present invention relates in a first consideration to aldimines of formula (I). Said aldimines are particularly suitable as latent hardeners in curable compositions, particularly compositions comprising one or two-component isocyanate groups. Due to the presence of the reactive group, they can be converted to compounds of the formulas (X) and (XII) comprising aldimine groups, implementing a further consideration of the present invention. The aldimines, or the compounds comprising aldimine groups, can be used primarily in adhesive and sealant materials, but also in coatings, and can be produced easily from readily available source materials, and have good thermal stability. The tertiary amino group thereof has a surprisingly low alkalinity and can in some cases have a catalytic effect in chemical reaction systems.

Die Zusammensetzung verfügt über eine lange Offenzeit, eine blasenfreie Aushärtung, eine sehr tiefe Glasübergangstemperatur, eine hohe Elastizität und eine überraschend hohe Festigkeit, welche über einen weiten Temperaturbereich sehr konstant sind. Weiterhin haftet sie sehr gut auf metallischen und nichtmetallischen Substraten, wobei sie auf glasigen thermoplastischen Kunststoffen kaum Spannungsrisse verursacht. Sie ist somit hervorragend geeignet als struktureller elastischer Klebstoff für Verklebungen, welche in einem breiten Temperaturbereich beansprucht werden. The present invention relates to a two-component polyurethane composition containing at least 55% by weight of polybutadiene polyols based on the total amount of all polyols having an average molecular weight of at least 500 g / mol, and at least one latent curing agent, wherein the ratio of the number of reactive groups of the latent curing agent to the number of existing OH groups in the range of 0.02 to 0.4. The composition has a long open time, a bubble-free cure, a very low glass transition temperature, a high elasticity and a surprisingly high strength, which are very constant over a wide temperature range. Furthermore, it adheres very well to metallic and non-metallic substrates, where it hardly causes stress cracks on glassy thermoplastics. Polyaldimine of this invention is represented by the formula (I): wherein R¹, R² and R³ are a halogen atom, hydrogen atom, alkoxy group having 4 or less carbon atoms or an alkyl group having 5 or less carbon atoms, and may be the same or different; R⁴ is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; Y is -N=CH-C(R⁵ )₃ or -N=CH-C(CH₃ )₂-CH₂-O-CO-R⁶ wherein R⁵ is an alkyl group having 4 or less carbon atoms, R⁶ is an alkyl group, anilino group, benzylamino group or an alkylamino group having 16 or less carbon atoms; and ℓ is an integer of 1 or 2, m is an integer of 1 to 3, and n is an integer of 0 to 300. Polyaldimine is prepared by condensation of the corresponding aromatic polyamine and aldehyde. A moisture curable polyurethane composition is prepared from the above polyaldimine and organic polyisocyanates. Sealing materials, wall covering materials, water proof materials and flooring materials can be prepared by blending thixotropic agents or fillers with the polyurethane composition. These materials have very good storage stability and are rapidly cured by atmospheric moisture and cured polyurethane resin having excellent properties can be obtained.

The present invention relates to a coating composition having an improved pot life without a corresponding increase in dry time when cured under ambient conditions which contains a) a polyisocyanate component, b) an aldimine based on the reaction product of a polyamine having 2 or more primary amino groups with an aldehyde corresponding to the formula: O=CHCH(R1)(R2) wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent optionally substituted hydrocarbon radicals, or R1 and R2 together with the .beta.-carbon atom form a cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic ring and c) 0.001 to 5 weight percent, based on the weight of components a) and b), of a tin(IV) compound which is a catalyst for the reaction between isocyanate groups and hydroxyl groups, wherein components a) and b) are present in an amount sufficient to provide an equivalent ratio of isocyanate groups to aldimine groups of 0.5:1 to 20:1.

Aldimines of formula (I) that are particularly suitable as latent hardeners in curable compositions, particularly compositions having one or two-component isocyanate groups. Due to the presence of the reactive group, they can be converted to compounds of formulas (X) and (XII) having aldimine groups. The aldimines, or the aldimine compounds, can be used primarily in adhesive and sealant materials, but also in coatings, and can be produced easily from readily available source materials, and have good thermal stability. The tertiary amino group thereof has a surprisingly low alkalinity and can in some cases have a catalytic effect in chemical reaction systems.

Aldimino containing compounds obtained from a reaction of aldimines of formula (I) with a compound that bears at least one reactive group that can enter into addition reactions with an HX group of an aldimine of formula I. The compounds containing aldimine groups can be used primarily in adhesive and sealant materials, but also in coatings, and can be produced easily from readily available source materials, and have good thermal stability. The invention particularly relates to curable compositions comprising at least one polyisocyanate, at least one amine that is blocked by means of aldehyde or ketone, and at least one carboxylic acid hydrazide or sulfonic acid hydrazide which has a minimum melting point of 100°C, especially at least 150°C. Surprisingly, after being cured using moisture at room temperature and when being heated to increased temperatures, significantly fewer volatile components of such compositions volatilize than in the corresponding compositions that do not contain said hydrazide.
