Disclosed are a thermosetting polyurethane coating composition of one-pack type which comprises a product obtained by reacting (i) an isocyanate component having at least one oxadiazinetrione ring obtained by the reaction of bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane with carbon dioxide with (ii) a polyol component having a molecular weight of 400 to 50,000 at such a proportion as satisfying the relations: the number of hydroxyl group > the number of free isocyanate group and the number of oxadiazinetrione ring/(the number of hydroxyl group--the number of free isocyanate group)=0.1 to 10 and a process for producing the coating composition. The composition has excellent storage stability and the cured coatings have no problems of yellowing and pin-holes and are excellent in mechanical properties, chemical resistance and weather resistance.

Crosslinking of the polyester takes place by reaction of the isocyanate with the active hydrogen of the CH2 group of the malonate to give amide linkages, in addition to formation of urethane linkages in the case where the polyester contains free hydroxyl groups. The products range from elastomeric materials, where the isocyanate is in the form of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer derived by reaction of an organic polyisocyanate with a polyol, to more rigid plastics where the isocyanate is a "simple" isocyanate, i.e. not in prepolymer form.

In the preparation of polymethylene polyphenyl polycarbamates of general formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is C1-6 alkyl or C5-10 cycloalkyl, R2 is H, halogen, C1-6 alkyl or C1-6 alkoxy, n is 1-4 and m is 0-5 by reacting an N-phenyl carbamic acid ester of general formula <IMAGE> with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-producing compound in the presence of water and an acid catalyst, the acid catalyst is used in the form of its aqueous solution having an acid catalyst concentration, at the start of the reaction, of at least 10% by weight and in an amount, at the start of the reaction, of from 0.01 to 100 moles per mole of the N-phenyl carbamic acid ester, and the reaction is carried out at a temperature of from 20 to 150 DEG C. After completion of the reaction, the aqueous acid catalyst solution containing small amounts of organic impurities may be recovered, subjected to adjustment of its acid catalyst concentration, and then reused directly for a subsequent reaction.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Bis(cyclic ureas) are disclosed which have the formula wherein R is -?-alkylenen(C1-11)-?- or and CnH2n is ethylene or 1,3-propylene each of which can be substituted by one or more inert substituents. These compounds are useful as masked diisocyanates which, on heating in the presence of a polyol and, optionally, a polyurethane catalyst give rise to polyurethane resins. Accordingly they are useful as a component of storage stable compositions which are convertible to polyurethanes upon heating. Such compositions are particularly useful as solvent-less coating compositions. The properties of the above compounds are distinguished in a number of respects from the known bis(cyclic ureas) in which CnH2n has 4 or more carbon atoms in the chain between the valencies. Illustratively, the above compounds are more stable on exposure to heat in the absence of catalysts but, in the presence of polyurethane catalysts react with polyois at a significantly faster rate than the prior art compounds.
