Processes for rendering a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin storage stable, including processes that prepare a storage stable resin and/or processes that treat resins. A composition containing a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin which includes CPD-forming species can be treated with at least one agent under conditions to at least one of inhibit, reduce and remove the CPD-forming species to obtain a reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin when stored for 2 weeks at 50°C, and a pH of about 2.5 to 3.5 contains less than about 250 ppm dry basis of CPD. The invention is also directed to a gelation storage stable reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin, when stored at pH 1 for 24 hours at 50°C and measured at 24 hours, produces less than about 1000 ppm dry basis of CPD. A paper product containing the storage stable polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, when corrected for adding at about a 1 wt% addition level of the polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, contains less than about 250 ppb of CPD. Moreover, a resin can be prepared starting from a prepolymer having a low acid number or low concentration of acid end groups. The invention is also directed to papers containing the resins.

A process for making an acid stabilized, base reactivatable resin. A polyalkylene polyamine is reacted with a C3-8 sat. aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to form a water soluble polyamide. The polyamide is reacted with epichlorohydrin to form an aq. soln. of cationic thermosetting resin that contains reactive cross-linking groups and chlorohydrin groups. This soln. is reacted with sufficient water-sol. acid to convert some of the reactive cross linking groups to aminochlorhydrin acid anion groups and to stabilize any groups containing epichlorophydrin at the chlorohydrin stage. These resins have improved stability against gelation without the necessity of readjusting pH following a ageing period. If the acid stabilization reduces wet-strength, this can be regained by addition of sufficient base to neutralize the acid used for stabilization. For incorporation in aqueous paper pulp suspensions for preparing wet-strength paper.

The invention is directed towards methods and compositions for improving the sizing of paper using PAE. Proper sizing of paper requires that a sizing agent adequately disperse so as to evenly distribute on the paper. Proper sizing also requires that the agent not cause runnability or chemical problems with other materials or equipment used in the papermaking process. PAE displays unexpected attributes that allow it to disperse sizing agents. Best of all it is not subject to the same overdose effect of typical emulsifiers such as cationic starch. As a result PAE is an excellent option for use in sizing paper.

Epichlorohydrin-based polymers containing primary amino groups used as additives in papermaking

Disclosed is a method for manufacture and application of a polymeric papermaking additive, which can be used in paper manufacture as an agent for improving retention, drainage, product strength and paper machine operation. The additive according to this disclosure is a polymer of epichlorohydrin and contains primary amino groups. Under neutral or acidic conditions these primary amino groups become cationic, which assures good adsorption of the polymer onto anionic fibres and fines of pulps used for production of paper or paperboard. By adsorbing on several fibres or fines, the polymer can increase the retention of fines and fillers. Primary amino groups of this polymer can also form chemical bonds with carbonyl groups of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, which are especially abundant in the fibres and fines of mechanical pulps. The cross-linking of fibres and fines by chemical bonds can increase the initial strength of wet web and the strength of rewetted paper. Mechanical pulps contain high negative charge and tend to deactivate many conventional cationic polymers. Because of its high cationic charge and the ability to form chemical bonds with mechanical pulp, novel papermaking additive according to this invention is particularly suitable for improving the retention and the strength of paper made from fibrous pulp suspensions that contain at least a portion of mechanical pulp. If the polymer has a high molecular weight it can be use as a single component retention and strength additive. If the polymer has a relatively low molecular weight, it can be conveniently used as coagulant and can be combined with a high-molecular-weight, low-charge-density polymer that serves as a flocculent.

A composition containing a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin which includes CPD-forming species can be treated with at least one agent under conditions to at least one of inhibit, reduce and remove the CPD-forming species to obtain a reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin when stored for 2 weeks at 50°C, and a pH of about 2.5 to 3.5 contains less than about 250 ppm dry basis of CPD. The invention is also directed to a gelation storage stable reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin, when stored at pH 1 for 24 hours at 50°C and measured at 24 hours, produces less than about 1000 ppm dry basis of CPD. A paper product containing the storage stable polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, when corrected for adding at about a 1 wt% addition level of the polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, contains less than about 250 ppb of CPD. Moreover, a resin can be prepared starting from a prepolymer having a low acid number or low concentration of acid end groups. The invention is also directed to papers containing the resins.

The invention also relates to a process for purifying a solution of a nitrogen containing epihalohydrin polymer.

Wet strength resins for paper are prepared by a process comprising the following steps in sequence: (1) reacting a polyamidoamine with an epihalohydrin until the amount of unreacted epihalohydrin present is less than about 10% by weight of the amount of epihalohydrin charged, (2) adding a water-soluble, nonpolymeric amine in an amount of about 0.1 to about 50 mole %, based on the amine in the polyamidoamine, and (3) heating to effect crosslinking. An optional amine additive reaction step can be included after step (2). A nonhalogen acid such as sulfuric acid can be added toward the end of the crosslinking step to decrease the total organic halogen content and increase the wet strengthening effectiveness.

The process includes a) producing a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin in aqueous solution such that the epihalohydrin used to make the resin is in molar excess relative to the secondary amine functionality in the resin, and terminating the reaction, by cooling and, optionally, adjusting the pH to less than about 8.0; b) adjusting the pH of the polyamine-epihalohydrin solution to a range of from about 7.5 to about 11 and concurrently heating the solution to a range of from about 35 to about 50°C, and maintaining, such conditions for about 5 to about 50 minutes; c) contacting the aqueous solution resulting from the pH treatment of step b) with selected microorganisms at a cell concentration of greater than about 5 × 10 7 cells/ml, or an enzyme, at a pH in the range of from about 4 to about 8 and a temperature range of about 25 to about 35°C for a period of time from about 6 to about 50 hours duration; and d) deactivating or removing the enzymes or microbes, cooling to about 20°C and stabilizing the composition by adjusting the pH to a range of about 2.0 to about 5.0 by the addition of acid. Polyamine-epihalohydrin resin products having very low levels of residual epihalohydrin hydrolyzates with very high wet strength effectiveness, useful in papermaking are produced.

Polyamidoamine (PAE) resins are prepared from polyamidoamine made with excess amine, which are reacted with a specifically defined amount of difunctional crosslinker. The amount of difunctional crosslinker used is based on the polyamidoamine amine number and reduced specific viscosity (RSV). The PAE resin is prepared by first synthesizing a polyamidoamine from a polyamine and a polycarboxylic acid or polycarboxylic acid derivative, wherein the polyamine is present in a molar excess, said molar excess being from about 1.02 to 2.00, then reacting the polyamidoamine with difunctional crosslinker, wherein the weight % of difunctional crosslinker to polyamidoamine solids is no more than about 0.308(amine number/RSV) - 9.18 or 0,385(amine number/RSV) - 5.20, wherein the amine number is expressed as the milliequivalents of amine per gram of polyamidoamine solids and the RSV is the reduced specific viscosity measured at 2 % concentration in IM NH4CI expressed in deciliters per gram. PAE resins prepared according to this process can by used in creping adhesives, which are used to manufacture a variety of paper articles, such as facial tissue, bath tissue, wipes, paper towels, paper napkins, filter papers, and coffee filters.

Processes for preparing water-soluble papermaking polymer additives having a multitude of free amino groups effective to form cationically charged complexes with components of a pulp suspension are described, comprising: reacting ammonia and epichlorohydrin (ECH) with ammonia in excess to yield a starburst polymer with a molecular weight of 3000-106; reacting ECH and ammonia to produce tris(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropylamine) and reacting this with a diamine to yield a water-soluble branched polymer with a molecular weight of 3000-106; reacting polyepichlorohydrin with a variety of amines, a polyol or ammonia to yield linear polymers, cross-linked polymers and polyamines. The additives are used as agents for improving retention, drainage, product strength and paper machine operation in paper manufacture. Under neutral or acidic conditions these primary amino groups become cationic, which assures good adsorption of the polymer onto anionic fibres and fines used for production of paper or paperboard. By adsorbing on several fibres or fines, the polymer can increase the retention of fines and fillers. Primary amino groups of these polymers can also form chemical bonds with carbonyl groups of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, which are especially abundant in the fibres and fines of mechanical pulps. The cross-linking of fibres and fines by chemical bonds can increase the initial strength of wet web and the strength of rewetted paper.

The multifunctional acid includes but is not limited to carboxyl and sulfonyl. The acid has a functional group selected from carboxyl and sulfonyl and a functional group selected from carboxyl, sulfonyl, hydroxyl, lactone, phenol, amine and heterocycle. The PAE resin facilitates the use of an adhesive in a Yankee Dryer apparatus that is durable when the adhesive is wet but remains soft when the adhesive becomes dry. These properties allow the adhesive to be strong and remain engaged to the dryer apparatus when wet but be easily removed by the creping blade when dry.

An adhesive composition comprising a) a protein component, b) an azetidinium functionalized polymer, and c) one or more viscosity modifying components selected from the group consisting of ethanedithiol, 1,3-propanedithiol, 1,4-butanedithiol, 2 , 3-butanedithiol, 1,5-pentanedithiol, 1,5-hexanedithiol, dithiothreitol, dithioerythritol and 1-mercaptoethyl ether; wherein the pH of the composition is between 5 and 7.5; wherein the viscosity of the composition is less than 150,000 mPa.s (cP) and the solids content is greater than 25%.
