A method of coating a composite 20 comprises applying an adhesion promotion layer 22 containing metal particles 26 in a binder paint 24 to the composite and applying a thermal spray coating 28 to the adhesion promotion layer. Typically, the metal particles are irregularly-shaped and may be produced by water atomisation. The particles may be steel particles having a size of 5-90 microns. In one embodiment, at least some of the metal particles are exposed through the binder paint so as to engage the thermal spray coating when applied. The adhesion promotion layer and the overlying thermal spray coating may be applied to an edge 20a of the composite. Preferably, the edge has a rounded or bevelled profile. The thermal spray coating may comprise a high velocity oxygen fuel spray coating. Alternatively, a twin wire arc bond coating may be applied to the adhesion promotion layer before application of the high velocity oxygen fuel spray coating.

There are disclosed polyolefinic films carrying two coatings, the first coating consisting of amino compounds and the second of a mixture of vinyl or vinylidene polymers or copolymers, epoxy resins and microcrystalline waxes, and which films, by virtue of the coatings, are readily thermoweldable, impervious to gases and vapors, and have improved resistance to sticking to the bars of conventional automatic and semi-automatic welding machines. A process for preparing the new polyolefinic films is also disclosed.

The method includes (S1) preparing a slurry containing inorganic particles dispersed therein and a solution of a binder polymer in a solvent, and coating the slurry on at least one surface of a porous substrate to form a first porous coating layer, and (S2) electroprocessing a polymer solution on the outer surface of the first porous coating layer to form a second porous coating layer. The first porous coating layer formed on at least one surface of the porous substrate is composed of a highly thermally stable inorganic material to suppress short-circuiting between an anode and a cathode even when an electrochemical device is overheated. The second porous coating layer formed by electroprocessing improves the bindability of the separator to other base materials of the electrodes.

A bonding material is described that is well suited to bonding polymer films, such as polyester films, to other substrates. In one embodiment, for instance, the bonding material can be used to bond a polyester film to a layer containing an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer to form a backing material for a photovoltaic device. The bonding material generally comprises a polymer component combined with a cross-linking agent. The polymer component may comprise an alkylene carboxylic acid copolymer, such as an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer or an ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer. In an alternative embodiment, the polymer component may comprise a phenoxy resin. The cross-linking agent, on the other hand may comprise an oxazoline polymer.
