A thermoplastic composition that contains a rigid renewable polyester and a polymeric toughening additive is provided. The toughening additive can be dispersed as discrete physical domains within a continuous matrix of the renewable polyester. An increase in the deformation force and elongational strain causes debonding to occur in the renewable polyester matrix at those areas located adjacent to the discrete domains. This can result in the formation of a plurality of voids adjacent to the discrete domains that can help to dissipate energy under load and increase impact strength. To even further increase the ability of the composition to dissipate energy in this manner, an interphase modifier may be employed that reduces the degree of friction between the toughening additive and renewable polyester and thus enhances the degree and uniformity of debonding.

The second polyolefin may be a syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP), a random copolymer (RCP) of propylene and comonomer (e.g. ethylene and/or butene) made using a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalyst, medium density polyethylene (MDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), or low crystalline copolymer of propylene/α-olefin. Improvements include, but are not necessarily limited to, reduced motor amps, lower secant modulus, increased dart drop strength, increased gloss, reduced haze, increased elongation to yield, elimination of stress whitening, improved puncture resistance, and decreased seal initiation temperature. The ethylene copolymers have 70 wt. % to 85 wt. % of units derived from ethylene and at least 12 wt. % of units derived from at least one α-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The copolymers preferably further have a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) ranging from about 50,000 to about 200,000 g/mol, melting point of at least 100° C., ratio of Mw/Mn of about 1.5 to about 3.5, a content of group 4 metals of no more than 25 ppm, and a ratio of wt ppm Group 4 metals/wt ppm Group 5 metals of at least 3. Such copolymers may be particularly useful as viscosity modifiers for lubricating oil compositions.

There is disclosed a flowable material packaging film comprising at least a resin blend of (a) from about 33 wt % to about 80 wt % of at least one ethylene-C 4 to C 10 -α-olefin interpolymer having a melt index of from 0.4 to 1.5 g/10 min (190° C., 2.15 kg), a density of from 0.900 to 0.916 g/cc; and (b) from about 67 wt % to about 20 wt % of at least one heterogeneous interpolymer of propylene with ethylene or ethylene and butene comprising from about 71 mol % to about 86 mol % propylene and from about 29 mol % to about 14 mol % ethylene or ethylene and butene, the interpolymer having an overall weight average molecular weight (M W ) of at least about 400,000, a xylene soluble phase of not less than 30% (wt), with the xylene soluble phase having a M W of at least about 275,000 and said heterogeneous interpolymer of polypropylene has a density of from 0.875 to 0.91 g/cc; and the film has a Hot Tack Initiation Temperature in the range of from about 100° C. to about 140° C. and a Hot Tack Strength of not more than about 5 N/inch in the temperature range of about 100° C. to about 150° C., when fabricated at a thickness of about 50 microns and tested using a JB Instrument Hot Tack Tester set at a 0.5 second dwell, 0.2 second delay time, 40 psi seal bar pressure and 250 mm/second peel rate; and the film has a flex crack resistance such that it develops 5 or less pinholes per 300 cm 2 in 10,000 cycles of Gelbo Flex testing as measured according to ASTM F392. The film exhibits flex crack resistance and thus is useful in the manufacture of pouches and bags made from such films. Processes for making such pouches and bags which may include aseptic conditions are also described.

Rigid renewable polyester compositions having a high impact strength and tensile elongation

A thermoplastic composition that contains a rigid renewable polyester and a polymeric toughening additive is provided. The toughening additive can be dispersed as discrete physical domains within a continuous matrix of the renewable polyester. An increase in the deformation force and elongational strain causes debonding to occur in the renewable polyester matrix at those areas located adjacent to the discrete domains. This can result in the formation of a plurality of voids adjacent to the discrete domains that can help to dissipate energy under load and increase impact strength. To even further increase the ability of the composition to dissipate energy in this manner, an interphase modifier may be employed that reduces the degree of friction between the toughening additive and renewable polyester and thus enhances the degree and uniformity of debonding.
