Filling and reinforcing agents such as starch and zinc oxide may be included, and lanolin is compatible with the composition. In an example, rubber is compounded with hydrogenated indene-coumarone resin, lanolin and zinc oxide; further examples include also polyisobutylene. with and without starch.

A liquid composition comprises chloroprene which has been polymerized only to the plastic state, an organic solvent and from 1 to 10 per cent by weight of the chloroprene of polyvinyl acetate which serves to increase the initial adhesive bond between two films of the composition. The chloroprene is dispersed in an organic solvent and the polyvinyl acetate, together with a curing agent for the chloroprene, are separately dispersed in an organic solvent, the two solutions or dispersions being mixed immediately before use; other compounding ingredients which do not promote the curing of the chloroprene may be incorporated in either of the solutions or dispersions. According to an example, chloroprene and phenyl-o-naphthylamine are dispersed in toluene diluted with ethyl acetate and naphtha and the polyvinyl acetate, zinc oxide and butyraldehyde-aniline condensation product are separately dispersed in toluene. Benzene, xylene and trichloroethylene are also referred to as suitable solvents.

Optional ingredients are conventional rubber additives, in particular carbon black. The vulcanization of a composition of the invention is illustrated using dicumyl peroxide and sulphur. Transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions are provided. The transparent elastomeric compositions can be covulcanized with rubbers such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene rubber, ethylene-propylene diene rubber or natural rubber. The colorable rubber compositions have sufficient properties to function as a reinforcing member in an automobile tire. Preferably, both the transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions include at least one copolymer of a C4 to C7 isolefin and a para-alkylstyrene, silica and a coupling agent.

Disclosed is a polypropylene composition useful for making solid state oriented film. The composition comprises two predominantly isotactic polypropylenes with the melting point temperature of one of the polypropylenes being substantially lower than the melting point temperature of the other. In one embodiment of the composition the higher melting point polypropylene is made by Ziegler-Natta catalysis, while the lower melting point polypropylene is made by metallocene catalysis. Compared to polypropylene with similar melt flow rate and made by Ziegler-Natta catalysis, and solid state oriented film thereof, the composition provides a better balance of elevated temperature draw characteristics and physical properties of oriented film made therefrom. Thus, at the same or lower elevated temperature yield stress, oriented film of the composition exhibits improved properties such as stiffness, elongation-at-break, dimensional stability, and oxygen barrier. Also disclosed is a method for the manufacture of oriented, flexible packaging film. In the method a cast sheet is melt extruded from the composition, and, after cooling until it is solid, the cast sheet is stretched to the desired extent of orientation at a temperature which the sheet does not break while being stretched, but below the Tm. of the composition. The resulting film then is cooled to at least the crystallization temperature of the lower melting point polypropylene.

Disclosed is a polypropylene composition useful for making solid state oriented film. The inventive compositions and adhesive systems also include a package for controlling the rate of cure and indicating the extent of cure. The inventive compositions and adhesive systems are particularly well suited to bonding applications which involve at least one low energy bonding surface, for example, polyolefin, polyethylene, and polypropylene surfaces.

The invention relates to novel adhesive alpha-olefin inter-polymers which are largely amorphous and have a rheological behavior that makes them suitable for adhesive use, both without and with minimized amounts of tackifying resins. Specifically, the invention poly-alpha olefin inter-polymer may be composed of A) from 60 to 94 mol % of units derived from one alpha mono-olefin having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms and B) from 6 to 40 mol % of units derived from one or more other mono-olefins having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms and at least one carbon atom more than A); and C) optionally from 0 to 10 mol % of units derived from another copolymerizable unsaturated hydrocarbon, different from A) and B); the diad distribution of component A in the polymer as determined by 13 C NMR as described herein showing a ratio of experimentally determined diad distribution over the calculated Bernoullian diad distribution of less than 1.07; and the storage modulus G′ of said polymer, determined upon cooling as described herein, intersecting a value of 3.10 5 Pa at a temperature of less than 85° C. The invention also describes polymerization processes suitable for the manufacture of these adhesive alpha-olefin inter-polymers.
