Self-cleaning coatings

Номер: US20120010314A1
Принадлежит: University of Western Ontario

The present invention provides two methods for synthesizing novel titania-polyurethane (nTiO 2 -PU) nanocomposites for self-cleaning coatings, one a polymer functionalization method (“grafting to”) and the other, a monomer functionalization method (“grafting from”). Here, 2,2 bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (HMPA) was used as the coordination agent, which was reacted with n-TiO 2 (50:50 anatase/rutile) to form nTiO 2 -HMPA, then polymerized in the monomer functionalization method. In the polymer functionalization method, HMPA was reacted with a pre-polymer to form the PU, and then subsequently reacted with n-TiO 2 to form the polymer nanocomposite. The photocatalytic cleanability of the nanocomposites was investigated when exposed to ultraviolet radiation using additional unreacted HMPA or stearic acid as the model “dirt” compounds. Nanocomposites prepared using both strategies showed similar self-cleaning behavior, although the monomer technique gave less substrate degradation.

Принадлежит: Innovia LLC

A polymer blend is provided that includes a polycarbonate polyurethane polymer component having a water contact angle greater than 75 degrees and a polyurethane polymer component having a water contact angle less than 75 degrees. The polycarbonate polyurethane component and the other polyurethane polymer can be immiscible with respect to one another, and thus are phase separated in the polymer blend. The weight percentage of the polycarbonate polyurethane polymer component is greater than the weight percentage of the other polyurethane polymer component in the blend. The polymer blend is well suited for realizing a low friction surface of a variety of medical and non-medical devices. 1. A composition comprising:a polymer blend including a first polymer component and a second polymer component, wherein the first polymer component is a polycarbonate polyurethane having a water contact angle greater than 75 degrees and the second polymer component is a polyurethane polymer having a water contact angle less than 75 degrees, wherein the weight percentage of the hydrophobic polycarbonate polyurethane polymer is greater than the weight percentage of the hydrophilic polyurethane polymer in the polymer blend.2. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein:the polycarbonate polyurethane polymer of the first polymer component and the polyurethane polymer of the second polymer component are immiscible with respect to one another and are phase separated in the polymer blend.3. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein:the polycarbonate polyurethane of the first polymer component has a water contact angle of at least 80 degrees.4. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein:the polyurethane polymer of the second polymer component has a water contact angle in the range of 65 to 75 degrees.5. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein:the polyurethane polymer of the second polymer component is capable of absorbing and retaining an amount of water that is at least 300% of its ...

Cleaning Method

Номер: US20130276242A1
Принадлежит: Xeros LTD

The invention provides a method for the cleaning of a soiled substrate, the method comprising treating the substrate with a solid particulate cleaning material and wash water, the treatment being carried out in an apparatus comprising a drum comprising perforated side walls and having a capacity of between 5 and 50 litres for each kg of fabric in the washload, wherein said solid particulate cleaning material comprises a multiplicity of polymeric particles at a particle to fabric addition level of 0.1:1-10:1 by mass, each particle being substantially cylindrical or spherical in shape and having an average density in the range of 0.5-2.5 g/cm 3 and an average volume in the range of 5-275 mm 3 , and wherein said drum comprising perforated side walls is rotated at a speed which generates G forces in the range of from 0.05 to 900 G. The polymeric particles may comprise foamed or unfoamed polymeric materials which may comprise either linear or crosslinked polymers. Preferably, at least one detergent is employed in the cleaning process. The invention provides optimum cleaning performance as a result of improved mechanical interaction between substrate and cleaning media and is preferably used for the cleaning of textile fabrics. The method allows for significant reductions in the consumption of detergents, water and energy when compared with the conventional wet cleaning of textile fabrics, and also facilitates reduced washing-related textile fabric damage. The invention also envisages a cleaning composition comprising a solid particulate cleaning composition and at least one additional cleaning agent. In particular embodiments of the invention, the solid particulate cleaning material is separated and recovered and then re-used in subsequent cleaning processes. Typically, the solid particulate cleaning material is itself cleaned intermittently in order to maintain its efficacy.
