The compositions may be prepared by stiring the Victoria Blue B base into the liquid mixture at 50-60 DEG C. An Example is given. The compositions may be diluted with water and used for dyeing paper.

Ethylene polymers are prepared by a process which comprises partially polymerizing ethylene feed in a first reactor wherein the reactants circulate internally during polymerization, and passing the effluent therefrom to a tubular second reactor wherein the said effluent passes substantially straight through and unpolymerized feed is polymerized therein at 100‹ to 400‹ C. and over 500 atmospheres. Reaction in the first reactor may be initiated by a coordination or supported oxide catalyst or by high energy radiation. The first reactor may be an autoclave which may have two or more zones in which different reactions prevail. Part of the monomer may be fed cold to the tubular reactor, optionally at a plurality of points, and the reaction therein may be controlled by periodic pressure changes. The ethylene may be copolymerized with acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and amides, and vinyl acetate. In examples apparatus comprising an autoclave with stirring means and a tubular reactor is used for the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of propane, oxygen and hexane solutions of lauroyl peroxide or t.-butyl perbenzoate.

Prepn. of water-soluble conc. solns. of cationic dye salts by (a) reacting a salt of a cationic azo dye contg. a pyridinium gp. attached through a lower alkylene amino gp. and an inorganic acid, with a water-sol. alkali bicarbonate in aq. or organic-aq. soln. or suspension, (b) isolating the dye bicarbonate salt, and (c) reacting it with a lower aliphatic 1-5C mono-carboxylic or mono-sulphonic acid to form a conc. soln. The concentrates are obtained in good yields and with high purity, any salts present remaining in soln. when the bicarbonate separates out. They can be dissolved in dye baths without requiring stirring or heating equipment.

The dyeings on acid modified polyacrylonitrile gives good depths of colour which are fast, esp. to light. In practice, the printing compsn. contg. the cationic dyestuff salt, opt. a binder stable below 230 degrees C, water and/or an organic solvent, is applied onto an inert carrier, dried, and brought into contact with the material to be dyed at 120-210 degrees C/5-60 secs. and opt. under mechanical press. The dyed material is then sepd. from the carrier.

Non-dusting, anhydrous cationic dye powders are made by treating the dye powder with a block copolymer of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide with mol. wt 1000-16000. Treatment is simple and does not require special equipment. The dyeing and solubility properties are not adversely effected. The polymer is pref. of mol. wt 1500-9000, and of formula HO(CH2CH2O)a-(CHCH2O)b-CH3(CH2CH2O)c-H, (in which a and c are 1-60, esp. 2-10 and b is 15-70, esp. 15-40). Amount used is 3-10% of the wt of dry dye. Treatment is by mixing with the dye press cake in water and subsequent drying or by adding the polymer, pref in a suitable solvent, e.g. toluene, to the dye powder with initimate mixing and removal of solvent.

Optical determination of anionic charge in a process stream

The present invention concerns a method of optical measurement of an aqueous stream, and of processing the results of the measurement in order to determine the anionic charge of the stream, the method being carried out by measuring the light absorption of the stream and predicting the amount of anionic groups in the stream using a mathematical processing, such as mathematical calculations. Particularly, the method includes the steps of adding an amount of a cationic dye to the aqueous stream, measuring the light absorption spectra of the obtained dye-containing stream, and processing the obtained light absorption spectrum using said mathematical processing in order to obtain the anionic charge. The invention also concerns the use of the obtained spectrum in determining the turbidity of the stream, as well as a device suitable for use in carrying out the method. 1. A method of optical measurement of an aqueous stream , and of processing the results of the measurement in order to determine the anionic charge of the stream , the method being carried out by measuring the light absorption or transmittance of the stream and predicting the total amount of anionic groups in the stream , further comprising:adding a fixed amount of a cationic dye to the aqueous stream,measuring the light absorption or transmittance spectra of the obtained dye-containing stream, andprocessing the obtained light absorption spectrum using mathematical processing in order to obtain the anionic charge.2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising selecting the stream from fibrous streams.3. Preferably azo, anthraquinone and nitro dyes are employed. The dye may be in solution in an organic solvent before adding to the aqueous alkaline solution of dispersing agent. Textile fibres of di- and tri-acetate, polyester polyolefins polyamide polyurethane, polycarbonate modacrylate wool and cotton or blends thereof may be dyed by contacting with a dye dispersion as above.
