A liquid crystal composition is provided, sufficiently having at least one, or a balance between at least two of the properties including a high upper-limit temperature of nematic phase, a low lower-limit temperature of nematic phase, a low viscosity, a proper optical anisotropy, a large negative dielectric anisotropy, a high resistivity, and high stability to UV or heat, etc. An active matrix LCD element is also provided, having properties including a short response time, a high voltage retention ratio, a high contrast and a long lifetime, etc. The composition includes a 2-ring compound with a large optical anisotropy and a large negative dielectric anisotropy as a 1st component, and a 2-ring compound with a large negative dielectric anisotropy and a low viscosity as a 2nd component. The present invention relates to liquid-crystalline media (LC media) having negative or positive dielectric anisotropy, comprising a low-molecular-weight component and a polymerisable component. The polymerisable component comprises self-aligning, polymerisable mesogens (polymerisable self-alignment additives) which effect homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media at a surface or the cell walls of a liquid-crystal display (LC display). A light-modulation element is disclosed which comprises a cholesteric liquid crystalline medium sandwiched between two opposing substrates, and an electrode arrangement for applying an electric field substantially perpendicular to the substrates. The cholesteric (chiral-nematic) liquid crystal exhibits the flexoelectric effect and is aligned in the uniformly lying helix (ULH) structure. One of the substrates is provided with a planar (i.e. homogeneous) alignment layer adjacent to the cholesteric liquid crystalline medium and the other substrate is provided with a homeotropic alignment layer. This arrangement provides for an intrinsically stable alignment which allows a high quality dark state to be achieved. The liquid crystal medium comprises at least one bimesogenic compound and at least one chiral compound. The light-modulation element can be used in various types of optical devices: displays, non-linear optical devices, and optical information storage devices.
