The single-polymerisable-group monomer or the multiple-polymerisable-group monomer is capable of being irradiated by ultraviolet light to allow for the polymerization reaction to form the polymer. Additionally, the reaction speed is moderate to prevent the polymer from being oversized and loosely piled up for high reaction speed.

The sensitizer according to the present invention has strong absorbability within the wavelength range of 300-360 nm of the ultraviolet light, which allows the response wavelength of the polymerizable monomer shifting to longer wavelength. Ultraviolet light irradiation within the wavelength range of 300-360 nm avoids the absorption band of the liquid crystal material, which reduces the damaging effects of ultraviolet light on liquid crystal material and alignment material of polyimide (P1), and improves the efficiency of the polymerization reaction and uniformity of the polymerizable monomer.

A compound represented by formula (i) has, as Ki1 in the formula (i), a structure represented by any one of formula (K-1) to formula (K-3). When used in a liquid crystal composition, it adheres to substrates which hold the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) therebetween, thereby permitting liquid crystal molecules to be maintained in the state of being aligned in the vertical direction. The liquid crystal composition using the compound enables liquid crystal molecules to be aligned even when the PI layer is not provided (vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules is induced without the voltage applied and horizontal alignment of liquid crystal molecules is realized with the voltage applied). It is possible to provide a polymerizable compound being excellent in storability and capable of uniform vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules with no PI layer provided.

The present invention provides a mixture for liquid crystal medium and a liquid crystal display using the same. The mixture for liquid crystal medium comprises: a liquid crystal material, a polymerizable monomer and a sensitizer. The sensitizer has strong absorbability within the wavelength range of 300-360 nm of the ultraviolet light. The liquid crystal display comprising: an upper substrate and a lower substrate which are parallel with each other, and a mixture for liquid crystal medium provided between the upper substrate and the lower substrate. The sensitizer according to the present invention has strong absorbability within the wavelength range of 300-360 nm of the ultraviolet light, which allows the response wavelength of the polymerizable monomer shifting to longer wavelength. Using ultraviolet light irradiation within the wavelength range of 300-360 nm avoids the absorption band of the liquid crystal material, which reduces the damaging effects of ultraviolet light on liquid crystal material and alignment material of polyimide (PI), and improves the efficiency of the polymerization reaction and uniformity of the polymerizable monomer.
