The product Biofuel is presented as a motor fuel consisting of levoglucosone pure or mixed with ethanol and or hydrocarbons. Its production process from cellulose or starch uses in the first step, as a solvent and catalyst, a mixture of an alkyl alcohol, the ionic liquid N-alkyl imidazole hydrochloride and a small quantity of 37% concentrated hydrochloric acid. In the second step, levoglucosone is extracted with butanol. As butanol also extracts some N-alkyl imidazole, this is washed out by extraction with hydrochloric acid. Levoglucosone was identified by elemental analysis, NMR C13 and H and GC-MS.

In a process for producing a low color diesel and/or kerosene fuel, a middle distillate feed can be supplied to a reactor having at least one first catalyst bed containing a first desulfurization and/or isomerization catalyst and at least one second catalyst bed containing a decolorization catalyst downstream from the first catalyst bed(s). The feed can be reacted with the hydrogen in the presence of the first catalyst at a temperature from about 290° C. to about 430° C. to produce a first liquid effluent, which can be cooled by about 10° C. to about 40° C. with a quench medium and cascaded to the at least one second catalyst bed. The cooled first liquid effluent can then be reacted with hydrogen in the presence of the decolorization catalyst at a temperature from about 280° C. to about 415° C. to produce a second effluent having an ASTM color less than 2.5.

Solvent-enhanced biomass liquefaction

The present invention provides an improved method for solvent liquefaction of biomass to produce liquid products such as transportation fuel. The method uses a novel solvent combination that promotes liquefaction relatively quickly, and it reduces the need to transport large amounts of hydrogen or hydrogen-carrying solvents. It operates at lower pressure than previous methods, does not require a catalyst or hydrogen gas or CO input, and provides very high conversion of biomass into a bio-oil that can be further processed in a petroleum refinery. It also beneficially provides a way to recycle a portion of the crude liquefaction product for use as part of the solvent combination for the biomass liquefaction reaction.

In addition to increased catalyst concentration, the inventive systems and methods provide increased reactor throughput, increased reaction rate, and of course higher conversion of asphaltenes and lower quality materials. Increased conversion levels of asphaltenes and lower quality materials also reduces equipment fouling, enables the reactor to process a wider range of lower quality feedstocks, and can lead to more efficient use of a supported catalyst if used in combination with the colloidal or molecular catalyst.

Preparation method of the catalyst comprises: adding the structure promoter S into a mixed solution of Fe/M nitrates, then co-precipitating with ammonia water to produce a slurry, filtering and washing the slurry to produce a filter cake, adding the required amount of the K promoter and water to the filter cake, pulping and spray drying, and roasting to produce the micro-spherical Fe-based catalyst for the slurry bed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The catalyst has good abrasion resistance and narrow particle size distribution, furthermore, it has high conversion capability of synthesis gas, good product selectivity and high space time yield, and the catalyst also can be used for the slurry bed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a wide temperature range.

It has been demonstrated that the light non-aromatic hydrocarbons in the raffinate stream generated from the extractive distillation or the liquid-liquid extractive process for aromatic hydrocarbons recovery can displace not only the heavy non-aromatic hydrocarbons but also the heavy aromatic hydrocarbons from the extractive solvent, especially when the aromatic hydrocarbons in the solvent are in the C 10+ molecular weight range.

Methane reacts with steam generating carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a first catalytic reactor; the resulting gas mixture undergoes Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a second catalytic reactor. In the steam/methane reforming, the gas mixture passes through a narrow channel having mean and exit temperatures both in the range of 750° C. to 900° C., residence time less than 0.5 second, and the channel containing a catalyst, so that only reactions having comparatively rapid kinetics will occur. Heat is provided by combustion of methane in adjacent channels. The ratio of steam to methane may be about 1.5. Almost all methane will undergo the reforming reaction, almost entirely forming carbon monoxide. After Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the remaining hydrogen may be fed back to the combustion channels. The steam for the reforming step may be generated from water generated by the chemical reactions, by condensing products from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and by condensing water vapor generated in combustion.

A new method of producing liquid transportation fuels from coal and other hydrocarbons that significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by combining Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with catalytic dehydrogenation is claimed. Catalytic dehydrogenation (CDH) of the gaseous products (C1-C4) of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can produce large quantities of hydrogen while converting the carbon to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Incorporation of CDH into a FTS-CDH plant converting coal to liquid fuels can eliminate all or most of the CO 2 emissions from the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction that is currently used to elevate the H 2 level of coal-derived syngas for FTS. Additionally, the FTS-CDH process saves large amounts of water used by the WGS reaction and produces a valuable by-product, MWCNT.

Production of lower olefins from synthesis gas

Disclosed is a process for the production of lower olefins by the conversion of a feed stream comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and catalysts as used therein, such as a Fischer-Tropsch process. By virtue of the invention, lower olefins can be formed from synthesis gas, with high selectivity, and low production of methane. The catalysts used herein comprise an α-alumina support, and a catalytically active component that comprises iron-containing particles dispersed onto the support in at least 1 wt. %. The majority of the iron-containing particles is in direct contact with the α-alumina and is well-distributed thereon. Preferably, the iron-containing particles have an average particle size below 30 nm, and most preferably below 10 nm. The supported catalysts not only show a high selectivity, but also a high catalyst activity and chemical and mechanical stability.

The present invention is directed to an in situ process for regenerating a reforming catalyst within a reactor by: (a) removing a carbon containing deposit from the reforming catalyst, (b) contacting the reforming catalyst with oxygen under catalyst rejuvenation conditions to provide a rejuvenated catalyst, (c) purging a portion of the oxygen from the rejuvenated catalyst such that residual oxygen is retained within the reactor, and (d) introducing hydrogen into the reactor at a rate to provide a reactor temperature increase in the range from 25 to 45° F.
