The fuels contain as detergent materials (A) diamides from 12-20C fatty acids and polyamines with 2-6C and 2-4N atoms, and (B) esters from 12-20C fatty acids and ethanol- or propanolamine. Pref. they also contain (C) a steric-hindered phenol contg. bulky alkyl substits. as anti-oxidant, and (D) residual oils from nonanol and decanol synthesis by the OXO process, as solvent modifiers for (A) and (C) and upper lubricants. Amt. of (A+B) or (A+B+C) is pref. 20-2000 (50-500) ppm. Ratio of (A); (B) (C) is pref. from 1:1:8 to 8:1:1 and of (A+B+C) : (D) is from 9:1 to 1:9. The additives prevent gum and resin deposits in carburetorrs, which interfere with the fine adjustments required for complete combustion and minimum hydrocarbon and CO contents in the exhaust gases.

A fuel additive composition includes a reaction product of a succinic acylating agent and a polyamine having at least one condensable primary amine group where the reaction product has a ratio of the imide to amide infrared carbonyl absorption peak areas of about 1:0.0-0.6 and a water content of about 0.3 % or less by weight. The succinic acylating agent is prepared by thermal condensation of a highly reactive polyolefin with maleic anhydride or a reactive equivalent thereof. This fuel additive composition has a low chlorine content and is very effective in fuel compositions that include a normally liquid fuel in reducing deposits in the fuel intake system of an internal combustion engine.

The hydrocarbon fuel antioxidant comprises carotinoid, vitamin A or vitamin E. The invention further provides applications and a method of application of the antioxidant. The antioxidant can promote the ultraviolet light stabilization effect of the fuels, but also can promote the oxygen stabilization effect of the fuels, and particularly can promote the combustion efficiency of the fuels and reduce the emission of contaminants when the antioxidant is together used with such additives as cetane number improver and octane number improver.

A fuel reforming system to reform a fuel to be supplied to an internal combustion engine includes a reformer, a first filter, and a first flow path. The reformer includes a reforming catalyst to reform a fuel including a hydrocarbon to produce an alcohol and benzoic acid as a by-product using air. Heavy fuel oils or residual fuel oils can be stabilized with magnesium overbased compounds such as magnesium overbased carboxylates. It was surprisingly discovered that adding magnesium overbased carboxylates to the residual fuel oils shortly after thermal cracking gave much better results than can be achieved after the application of the carboxylates to the fuel oil after storage. Further, compounds containing at least about 21 wt% magnesium also give better results than compounds with 18 wt% or less, in one non­ limiting embodiment. Magnesium overbased compounds can also be added to coker feedstocks to reduce coker furnace fouling. Treatment with the methods of this invention reduces asphaltene deposits and sludges.

The present invention provides a fuel additive for heavy oil in the form of a composition comprising an oil soluble metallic compound, an oxygen supplier, a dispersant, a lubricant, a nonionic surfactant, and a detergent. Addition of a small amount (0.025%) of the fuel additive of the present invention to the heavy oil can reduce the generation of particulate matter (PM), residual carbon, nitrogen oxides and the like upon combustion. In addition, when a small amount (0.025%) of the fuel additive of the present invention is added to the heavy oil, the maximum combustion pressure during combustion is increased while the exhaust temperature is lowered, thereby improving the combustion efficiency. Therefore, the fuel additive of the present invention is very useful for a large-sized boiler using heavy oil as a fuel, particularly a large-sized diesel engine.
