Copolymers are described of at least 75% by weight of tert-butyl styrene, from 1% to 24% by weight of a copolymerizable second monomer and from 1% to 10% by weight of methacrylic acid, the copolymers having certain specified solubility and rheological characteristics in AVTUR 50 aviation kerosene. A process for making the copolymers by aqueous emulsion polymerization of the monomers under certain defined conditions is also described. The copolymers are useful as additives to liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels for the purpose of reducing the tendency of such fuels to form inflammable mists under shock conditions.

PV. 30779 ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE MODIFICATION OF LIQUID HYDROCARBONS Specified copolymers of tert-butylstyrene are dissolved in a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon fuel, especially an aircraft fuel, by the steps of (i) blending the finely-divided copolymer with a non-solvent hydroxylic liquid miscible with the fuel, (ii) mixing the blend into the fuel so as to give a copolymer concentration of 0.1 - 1% by weight, and (iii) dissolving in the fuel so treated an amino compound in an amount of 0.01 - 0.6 mole per 100g of copolymer present. The copolymers thus dissolved impart to the fuel a resistance towards mist formation when the fuel is subjected to conditions of shock.

Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a method for preparing graft copolymers having 2-vinylpyridine branches (or other nitrogen-containing branches) on a backnone consisting of an ethylene/propylene copolymer or an ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer or other polyolefinic backbone. These graft copolymers are soluble in oil, whether of mineral (petroleum) origin or of synthetic nature, and impart thereto improved properties. This invention further relates to lubricating oil compositions and hydrocarbon fuel compositions containing the graft copolymers. They impart several beneficial properties to these fluids, in particular improvements in disper-sancy but also enhanced viscosity and viscosity/temperature relation-ships. The graft copolymers, when added to the oil, yield lubricants which are excellent dispersants for sludge formed in spark ignition and compression ignition engines.

Fuel compositions according to the invention act not only to control valve seat recession, but also to reduce and modify deposit formation, and thereby enhance engine combustion.

Improved stabilising additives for distillate fuels

Petroleum distillate fuels boiling between 300 DEG and 900 DEG F. are stabilized by the addition of a copolymer of the reaction product of epichlorhydrin and an unsaturated polymerizable compound containing a carboxyl group with a vinyl or vinylidene monomer or mixture thereof with another comonomer (see Group IV (a)). The epichlorhydrin reaction product is preferably a mixed ester of a dibasic acid of the formula <FORM:0836323/III/1> where R is a C8-C24 alkyl group, R1 and R11 are hydrogen or methyl and n is 1-3. Suitable comonomers are styrene, isobutylene, butadiene, allyl acetate, vinyl propionate, methyl methacrylate, allyl ethyl ether, divinyl ether, acrylonitrile or vinyl acetonitrile with which may be mixed lauryl maleate or tallow fumarate. The copolymer preferably has a molecular weight of 3,000-100,000 and is added in amounts of 0.002-2% by weight to heating oils, diesel fuels or jet engine fuels.ALSO:Mixed esters of unsaturated dibasic acids having the formula ROCOCR1=CR11COO(CH2CH(CH2Cl)O)nH where R is preferably a C8-C24 alkyl group, R1 and R11 are hydrogen or methyl, at least one preferably being hydrogen, and n is 1 to 3 are prepared by reacting a long chain alkyl half ester of the acid with epichlorhydrin. The acid may be maleic, fumaric, citraconic or mesaconic and the long chain alkyl group derived from straight or branched chain alcohols or mixtures thereof such as dodecyl, cetyl, eicosyl, docosyl, 2 - ethylhexanol - 1, C8 oxo - alcohols, capryl alcohol or the product obtained by hydrogenation of coconut oil (sold under the name "Lorol"). The ester: epichlorhydrin mol. ratio may be 1:1 to 1:4 but is preferably 1:1. They are reacted in the presence of 0.05 to 5% by weight of BF3 or its etherate, AlCl3 or AlBr3 or a basic catalyst such as NaOCH3 or NaOH. A method for dissolving in a liquid, mainly aliphatic, hydrocarbon fuel having a flash point not less than 90 DEG F an additive comprising: (a) a specified polymer; (b) a specified hydroxylic carrier liquid for the polymer; (c) a specified amine; the concentration of the polymer in the fuel being in the inclusive range from 0.05% to 1 % by weight, wherein the improvement comprises additionally adding to the fuel an additional component comprising one or more compounds selected from the following to improve dissolution of the additive in the fuel: (i) water: to an extent of from 0.1% to 1.25% by weight of the additive plus the additional component; (ii) glycerol: to an extent of from 0.1% to 1.25% by weight of the additive plus the additional component; (iii) ethylene glycol: to an extent of from 0.1% to 2% by weight of the additive plus the additional component; and (iv) carboxylic acid, preferably formic or acetic acid, to an extent of from 10% to 200% molar equivalent of the amount of amine present.
