In general, the organo groups of the ligands, L, will be the same, although they may be different and they preferably are selected from alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl and ether groups. For example, when L is a dialkyldithiocarbamate or a dialkyldithiophosphate, the alkyl groups will have from about 1 to 30 carbon atoms.

A lubricating composition containing an organic molybdenum compound having excellent oxidation stability that provides lubricity for long periods of time is provided. The lubricant comprises a molybdenum amine compound obtained by reacting a compound containing a hexavalent molybdenum atom with an amine represented by the following formula (1): where each of R 1 to R 3 represents a hydrogen atom and/or a hydrocarbon group having one or more carbon atoms, and at least one of R 1 to R 3 is a chain hydrocarbon group having 14 or more carbon atoms, or the following formula (2) wherein R 4 represents a chain hydrocarbon group having 10 or more carbon atoms, s represents 0 or 1, X and/or Y represents a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group having at least one carbon atom, an alkanol group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkyl amino group having at least one carbon atom, and X and Y are not hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon groups at the same time when s is 0. A lubricating composition containing the lubricant is also provided.

A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

The reactants may be reacted in any order, such as the above order, or the amine reactant may be precomplexed. Lubricant, grease, fuel and aqueous compositions are provided detergency and anti-wear properties by the presence of these multiple complexes.

Molybdenum-containing compositions are prepared by the reaction of an acid of molybdenum or salt thereof, phenol or aldehyde condensation product therewith, and a primary or secondary amine. The preferred amines are diamines such as tallow-substituted trimethylene diamine and their formaldehyde condensation products. An optional but preferred ingredient in the reaction mixture is at least one oil-soluble dispersant. The molybdenum-containing compositions are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels, and are especially useful in lubricants when combined with compounds containing active sulfur.

The lubricant may be mineral or synthetic, and may be a viscosity oil, a hydrocracked oil, a hydraulic oil, a gearbox oil, a transmission fluid, a wax or a grease. The Ni complex is esp. (I) a phenol sulphide of Ni, (II) a Ni alkylthioamine, (III) a Ni dithiophosphate, or (IV) a Ni dithiocarbamate. (I) are of formula (where R is H or 1-30C alkyl, e.g. -C8H17. (II) is e.g. Ni (2,2'-thio-bis-(4-tert. octylphenolato))-n-butylamine. (III) is e.g. Ni bis-(4-methyl-2-pentyl) dithiophosphate. (IV) is e.g. Ni N,N-dibutyl dithiocarbamate. The lubricant contains 0.01-5(0.1-2) wt % of the Ni complex.
