A transparent colloidal dispersion of calcium carbonate in oil is obtained in a two-stage reaction in which, in the first stage, CO2 is passed into a suspension of finely-divided calcium oxide (derived by burning CaCO3 above 2000 DEG F.) in methanol of <1% by volume water content in an amount 5-50% of that required to convert CaO to CaCO3 and, in the second stage, the oil and an oil-soluble dispersant are added and further CO2 is passed in to complete absorption, the dispersion then being distilled to remove methanol, treated with water and dehydrated. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and specific combinations of low soap detergents, dispersants, and/or mixtures thereof, as a minor component. The low soap detergents include alkaline earth metal salicylates, alkaline earth metal sulfonates, or mixtures thereof, all having the same or different total base number (TBN). The total amount of soap delivered by the low soap detergent is less than 0.60 weight percent of the lubricating oil. The dispersants include borated and/or non-borated polyisobutylene succinimide (PIMA) having a basic nitrogen content of 1% or greater. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

The present invention relates to light color, shelf-stable liquid compositions of overbased calcium carboxylate soaps and a process for their preparation. The inventive soaps are prepared by neutralizing calcium base in a mixture of two different aliphatic carboxylic acids and carbonating the mixture in the presence of a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent and a polar organic solvent as a promoter under controlled temperature conditions. The overbased calcium carboxylate soaps of the invention contain 20%-90% by weight of C 7 to C 25 saturated carboxylic acids, which are branched on carbon 2, and between 1% and 20% by weight short chain saturated carboxylic acids. These liquid compositions have light colors and excellent heat stability. They can be used as anticorrosion/antirust additives, and paint dryers and stabilizers, in paints, coatings and lubricants, as well as other applications.

Method of producing low-ash alkylsalicylate detergent-dispersing oil additive

Method involves obtaining low-ash alkylsalicylate detergent-dispersing magnesium additive by neutralisation of alkyl(C 8-18 )salicylic acid with a calculated amount of magnesium oxide MgO in presence of water, straight-run gasoline with boiling intervals 80–180 °C and oil M-6 at temperature 70–80 °C for 1–2 hours. Magnesium oxide used is its active form, characterised by iodine number not less than 75 mg-eq I 2 /100 g MgO. Reaction mixture is fed into a carbonator reactor, where after adding a promoter – methanol and gasoline-solvent at 60 °C while stirring, carbonation of mixture fed into reactor with carbon dioxide occurs (molar ratio of MgO:CO 2 =1:1). After carbonation reaction mixture is held for 30–120 minutes at temperature 45–65 °C, after which temperature in reactor is gradually increased to 90 °C and from reaction mass at low pressure promoter and water are distilled off. Further, reaction mass is purified from unreacted MgO by centrifuging at speed. Gasoline-solvent is removed by distillation in a vacuum. LOW ASH LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONS Abstract of the Disclosure Lubricant and functional fluids, and additive concentrates, are composed of a) at least one overbased zinc dialkyldithiophosphate characterized in that (i) each of the alkyl groups is a primary alkyl group containing from 6 to 10 carbonatoms, (ii) the overbased to neutral ratio of the dithiophosphate is 0.96 or above as determined by 31P nmr, (iii) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows less than about 0.25 area percent phosphorus at about 80 ppm, (iv) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphate species at 5 to 15 ppm, and (v) the dithiophosphate exhibits a copper weight loss in ASTM Test Method D2619 of 0.70 maximum; b) at least one hindered phenolic antioxidant or at least one aromatic secondary amine antioxidant; and c) at least one overbased alkaline earth metal sulfurized alkyl phenate having a TBN as determined by ASTM Test Method D2896 of at least 200 or at least one alkaline earth metal allyl aromatic sulfonate. Preferred zinc dithiophosphates are further characterized in that the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphorus species at 95 to 98 ppm. High thermal and oxidative ability is achieved.

An overbased phenate stearate is produced by overbasing a mixture that comprises sulfurized phenate, metal stearate (such as calcium stearate), at least one solvent, calcium hydroxide, and water, by contacting the mixture with carbon dioxide in the presence of an alkyl polyhydric alcohol, such as ethylene glycol. The level of agitation is maintained at a level sufficiently high so that all solids are suspended over the length of the overbasing step. The polyhydric alcohol to water ratio is maintained sufficiently high so that the ratio is at least 4:1 at the end of the overbasing step. The overbased mixture is stripped to produce an overbased phenate stearate having less than 0.10 vol. % fine sediments.

The process involves the steps of: (a) providing a composition comprising (i) a salt of a sulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound; (ii) an unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and (iii) an unsulfurized metal salt of the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound; wherein the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound is derived from alkylation of a hydroxyaromatic compound with one or more olefins comprising C 9 to C 18 oligomers of monomers selected from propylene, butylene or mixtures thereof; (b) protonating the unsulfurized metal salt of the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound with an effective amount of an acidic compound capable of protonating the unsulfurized metal salt of the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound; and (c) removing the unsulfurized alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound and the protonated unsulfurized metal salt of the alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic compound from the composition.
