Anti-corrosion agents are prepared by reacting an alkali metal nitrile with a natural resin containing free abietic acid, e.g. tall oil. An aqueous solution of the nitrile is preferably employed at a temperature below 60 DEG C. The abietic acid or material containing it may be an alcoholic solution to give a solution of the product in alcohol. Reaction may be performed in a composition whose anti-corrosive properties are to be inhibited or in a composition to be used for protecting against corrosion. Thus when neutralizing compositions containing abietic acid the aqueous alkali used, e.g. caustic potash may contain the alkaline nitrile in solution, to produce an agent for emulsifying mineral oil to give an emulsion which is non-corrosive or may even be used for preventing corrosion. Water-soluble products yielding anti-corrosive coatings removable with water or aqueous alkali may be obtained by mixing with soaps, aminoalcohol soaps or alkaline sulphonates. The preparation of these alkoxy-silane cluster compounds is also described. The compounds are useful in the operation of a fluid operating system which uses a hydraulic pressure transmission fluid or a heat transfer fluid.

The product is useful in lubricating compositions for internal combustion engines. Important features of the process are: use of a very small amount of alcohol, use of ammonia or ammonium compound and use of certain types of magnesium oxide.

A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

Gel oils include oils such as mineral oil, polybutene spill inhibitors, as well as antioxidants and spill point lowering agents. The gel oil composition is stable in the use temperature range, is tacky, ductile, flow resistant under gravity, has excellent lubricity and avoids abrasion. Gel oils are particularly suitable for buffer tube gel applications and as filling compounds for waveguides.

LOW ASH LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONS Abstract of the Disclosure Lubricant and functional fluids, and additive concentrates, are composed of a) at least one overbased zinc dialkyldithiophosphate characterized in that (i) each of the alkyl groups is a primary alkyl group containing from 6 to 10 carbonatoms, (ii) the overbased to neutral ratio of the dithiophosphate is 0.96 or above as determined by 31P nmr, (iii) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows less than about 0.25 area percent phosphorus at about 80 ppm, (iv) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphate species at 5 to 15 ppm, and (v) the dithiophosphate exhibits a copper weight loss in ASTM Test Method D2619 of 0.70 maximum; b) at least one hindered phenolic antioxidant or at least one aromatic secondary amine antioxidant; and c) at least one overbased alkaline earth metal sulfurized alkyl phenate having a TBN as determined by ASTM Test Method D2896 of at least 200 or at least one alkaline earth metal allyl aromatic sulfonate. Preferred zinc dithiophosphates are further characterized in that the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphorus species at 95 to 98 ppm. High thermal and oxidative ability is achieved.

SUBSTANCE: the lubricating oil comprises (wt %): 0.5-1.0 dispersing additive; 0.01-2 metal salt of dialkyldithiophosphoric acid; up to 1000 mineral oil or oil containing additives. The dispersing additive is a product of reaction of 0.7-0.95 equivalent of alkylenepolyamine per equivalent of polyisobutylene succinic acid containing 1.3-4 groups of succinic acid per equivalent weight of polyisobutylene having a mean numerical molecular weight of 1300-5000. The mean molecular weight to mean numerical molecular weight is 165-4.5. The dialkyldithiophosphoric acid salt is a salt of an acid in which one alkyl is isopropyl and the other alkyl contains 5-13 carbon atoms and 10-90 mole % of isopropyl groups and the metal is calcium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, tin, cobalt, nickel, iron, lead, molybdenum or copper. Oil further comprises 0.1-10% of a product of reaction of polyalkenylsuccinic acid in which polyalkylene has a mean numerical molecular weight of 700-2020 with an amine. Oil further comprises 0.01-5% of an alkaline earth metal neutral or basic salt of alkylbenzenesulfonic acid. Prodn. of lubricating oils and greases by dispersing thickners, additives and fillers in base fluids is carried out by means of ferromagnetic particles which form a vortex under the influence of a rotating magnetic field. The ferromagnetic particles can be of a magnetically soft or hard material (e.g. carbon steel, Ni or Co/Ni alloys) with a ratio of max. to min dimension of 6-20:1. The particles are pref. protected by a polymer coating. In the case of dispersing thickeners (e.g. metal soaps), these can be formed in situ by reaction of appropriate starting materials. High quality products can be produced in treatment times of a few seconds. Energy consumption is low. The process can be operated continuously and is readily automated.

In prepng. a lubricant for the external surface of bore-hole columns, by heating a mixt. of black oil, paraffin and bitumen to about 100 degrees C for 15-20 min., followed by cooling 15-35 wt.% of resinous pitch, with is not >0.1-0.2 wt.% soda and lye, is added to the mixt., which is heated at 260-300 degrees C for 30-60 min. The use of colophony is avoided, and a cheap compsn. is provided for damping vibration during boring. The lubricant adheres well to the outer surface of the bore-hole column. The surface is protected against corrosion. Consumption of diamond in the bore-head during boring may be reduced by 25-30%; rate of boring may be increased by 30-45%.

Non-leaking metal soap thickened lube oil (for lubricating textile machinery such as spindles, needles) is based on a hydrocarbon oil of viscosity 60-900 sus at 38 degrees C and aniline point 65-77 degrees C contains (instead of a hydrorefined naphthenic oil as in parent patent) a hydrorefined paraffinic oil, and also a binder, pref. polyolefin esp. (hydrogenated) polyisobutylene.

A lubricating oil formulation is described which is useful in internal combustion engines. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and at least 2.0% by weight of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN< group, and wherein said substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a poly-alkene, said polyalkene being characterized by an Mn value of about 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4.5, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) from about 0.05 to about 5% by weight of a mixture of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids wherein in at least one of the dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids, one of the hydrocarbyl groups (C-1) is an iso-propyl or secondary butyl group, the other hydrocarbyl group (C-2) contains at least five carbon atoms, and at least about 20 mole percent of all of the hydrocarbyl groups present in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups or mixtures thereof, provided that at least about 25 mole percent of the hydrocarbyl groups in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups, or mix-tures thereof when the lubrication oil compositions comprise less than about 2.5% by weight of (B). In one embodiment, the oil compositions contain at least about 0.05 weight percent of isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups or mixtures thereof derived from the mixture of metal salts of phosphorodithioic acids (C).
