An extreme-pressure lubricating composition contains a lubricating oil and (1) a chlorinated hydrocarbon and (2) a minor proportion of a sulphur-containing fraction from the pyrolysis or distillation of bituminous shale, preferably a fraction containing from 13 to 25 per cent of sulphur mainly present as high molecular weight alkyl thiophenes and boiling above 200 DEG C, preferably between 250 DEG C ano 300 DEG C. Alternatively, a fraction as at (2) above may be chlorinated or condensed with a polychlorinated hydrocarbon, and the product used instead of or with addition (1). Fraction (2) above or its chlorination product may also be treated with a sulphide of phosphorus before addition to the lubricating oil, or the fraction may be phosphorized and then chlorinated. Solids are treated to enable them to be colloidally suspended in oils, such as hydrocarbons and their halogen substitution products and saponifiable oils, by grinding them with an aqueous solution of a soap i.e. a salt of a higher fatty acid or resin acid capable of dissolving (swelling) in water, and treating the resulting suspension with an agent adapted to precipitate the soap as a coating on the particles, and present in sufficient quantity to coagulate the suspension. The coated particles are then incorporated with the oil and the associated water eliminated e.g. by drying, or the particles may be dried before incorporation with the oil. Lubricants having a low coefficient of friction and causing low surface wear consist of at least 1 per cent of organic compounds not containing metallic atoms and consisting of at least three substituted or unsubstituted rings interconnected directly or indirectly, dissolved or suspended in organic liquid or mixed with known lubricants. Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

Lubricants and paint removing compositions comprise the gel-like reaction products obtained by mixing 2-amino-2-methylpropanol with one or more secondary nitroparaffins and, optionally, with one or more inert solvents such as water, primary or tertiary nitroparaffins, ketones, amines, alcohols, ethers or chlorinated hydrocarbons. These amino phenols can be conveniently prepared by nitrating an appropriate hydroxy aromatic compound and reducing the nitro groups to amino groups. Typically such amino phenols are formed by nitration and reduction of alkyl phenols having an alkyl or alkenyl group of at least about 50 carbon atoms.

A method is provided that forms a solid film on a bearing component of a rolling bearing. A solution containing a fluorine compound and a lubricant having no functional group is allowed to adhere to the bearing component as a first liquid film (adhesion step). The adhering first liquid film is hardened to form the solid film on the bearing component. The rolling bearing including the bearing component with the solid film formed thereon is rotated. The rolling bearing is washed in a washer fluid containing the same lubricant as that used in the adhesion step, and the washer fluid is allowed to adhere to the bearing component as a second liquid film. A lubricating grease is prepared by dispersing a waterproofed clay or clay-like material in a lubricating oil in the presence of a polar organic compound miscible with the oil and having a dielectric constant greater than 10 at 20 DEG C. An increase in the gelling power of the clay, and a reduction in the milling necessary are obtained. The clay may be natural, particularly montmorillonite of high magnesia content, or synthetic clay or zeolite, e.g. made by coprecipitating silica and magnesia by adding magnesium chloride to potassium silicate solution, drying the gel, and heating with caustic soda at 240 DEG C and 450-550 p.s.i. to give a synthetic Hectorite. The magnesium chloride may be replaced by calcium, barium or aluminium chloride, and caustic soda by potash, ammonia or lithia. A preferred class of clays contains 2-20 per cent of alkaline-earth metal. The waterproofing may be effected by treating a clay hydrosol with a cationic surface active agent such as a quaternary ammonium compound or amine salt having at least one hydrocarbon radical of 12 or more carbon atoms or a partial amide of a fatty acid of at least 12 carbon atoms with a condensation product of ammonia or an amine with acrolein or its analogues or of ammonia with epichlorhydrin. The clay should contain at least 30 per cent by weight of hydrophobic surface active radicals. Another method of waterproofing clays comprises treating with a solution of a salt capable upon heating of forming basic salts, e.g. lead, barium or strontium salts of fatty acids, washing out unadsorbed salt and heating at 100-435 DEG C for 1-24 hours. Mineral lubricating oils are preferred but synthetic oils may be used such as alkylene oxide, glycol or olefin polymers, organic phosphates, silicone fluids, and carboxyclic esters. The polar compound is preferably a liquid boiling below 150 DEG C and having a dielectric constant of 15-35 at 20 DEG C.
