A jelly-like composition which is semisolid and adhesive at ordinary temperatures comprises a halogenated cyclic hydrocarbon admixed with a soap and converted by heating and agitation &c. to a gel state. The composition may be employed as high temperature lubricants, for dielectric and insulating purposes and as adhesive media in gas-cleaning apparatus. Suitable soaps are those of oleic, stearic or palmitic acids with aluminium, lead, zinc or sodium. The material is heated to about 100 DEG C. and 3--15 per cent of soap is slowly added with energetic stirring. Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

A lubricating grease is prepared by dispersing a waterproofed clay or clay-like material in a lubricating oil in the presence of a polar organic compound miscible with the oil and having a dielectric constant greater than 10 at 20 DEG C. An increase in the gelling power of the clay, and a reduction in the milling necessary are obtained. The clay may be natural, particularly montmorillonite of high magnesia content, or synthetic clay or zeolite, e.g. made by coprecipitating silica and magnesia by adding magnesium chloride to potassium silicate solution, drying the gel, and heating with caustic soda at 240 DEG C and 450-550 p.s.i. to give a synthetic Hectorite. The magnesium chloride may be replaced by calcium, barium or aluminium chloride, and caustic soda by potash, ammonia or lithia. A preferred class of clays contains 2-20 per cent of alkaline-earth metal. The waterproofing may be effected by treating a clay hydrosol with a cationic surface active agent such as a quaternary ammonium compound or amine salt having at least one hydrocarbon radical of 12 or more carbon atoms or a partial amide of a fatty acid of at least 12 carbon atoms with a condensation product of ammonia or an amine with acrolein or its analogues or of ammonia with epichlorhydrin. The clay should contain at least 30 per cent by weight of hydrophobic surface active radicals. Another method of waterproofing clays comprises treating with a solution of a salt capable upon heating of forming basic salts, e.g. lead, barium or strontium salts of fatty acids, washing out unadsorbed salt and heating at 100-435 DEG C for 1-24 hours. Mineral lubricating oils are preferred but synthetic oils may be used such as alkylene oxide, glycol or olefin polymers, organic phosphates, silicone fluids, and carboxyclic esters. The polar compound is preferably a liquid boiling below 150 DEG C and having a dielectric constant of 15-35 at 20 DEG C. Prodn. of lubricating oils and greases by dispersing thickners, additives and fillers in base fluids is carried out by means of ferromagnetic particles which form a vortex under the influence of a rotating magnetic field. The ferromagnetic particles can be of a magnetically soft or hard material (e.g. carbon steel, Ni or Co/Ni alloys) with a ratio of max. to min dimension of 6-20:1. The particles are pref. protected by a polymer coating. In the case of dispersing thickeners (e.g. metal soaps), these can be formed in situ by reaction of appropriate starting materials. High quality products can be produced in treatment times of a few seconds. Energy consumption is low. The process can be operated continuously and is readily automated.

Aromatic compounds are alkylated with C20-C1300 olefinic oligomers by contacting the oligomers and aromatic compounds with an acidic catalyst to produce novel alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon compositions useful as lubricant basestock and additives. The olefinic oligomers used as alkylating agents are prepared from 1-alkene oligomerization in contact with a reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support. In one embodiment, the aromatic compounds are alkylated with a mono-olefinic HVI-PAO dimer which is prepared as a product or by-product from 1-alkene oligomerization using reduced chromium oxide on solid support. The alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons retain the unique features of the alkylating olefinic oligomer and exhibit high viscosity index and low pour point. The novel alkylaromatic compositions show improved thermal stability; also, the compositions are useful as lubricant additives for improved antiwear properties, antioxidant and other properties.

Lubricants and hydraulic fluids comprise (1) a bright stock oil having a viscosity in the range of from 150 to 250 SSU at 210‹ F., (2) (a) a phosphate ester of the class represented by the general formula in which each of R, R 1 and R 2 is an alkyl group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms or a phenyl or substituted phenyl group provided not more than one of R, R 1 and R 2 is an alkyl group, or a mixture of such esters; or (b) a mixture of at least one such ester with at least one phosphate ester having the same general formula but in which two or three of R, R 1 and R 2 are C 2-18 alkyl groups, provided that the overall alkyl ester group to aryl ester group ratio in the mixture does not exceed 1.5 to 1, and (3) a halogenated compound or mixture of halogenated compounds selected from halogenated benzenes, halogenated biphenyls, and halogenated terphenyls, wherein the amounts of (1), (2) and (3) are within the area defined by the area ABC of Fig. 1, provided that where component (3) is a halogenated biphenyl or a mixture of a halogenated biphenyl with a minor amount of a halogenated terphenyl, the bright stock oil is one having a viscosity of from 150 to less than 190 SSU at 210‹ F. Many examples of phosphate and halogenated compounds are given. Polyacrylate and methacrylates may also be present.

1333500 Triaryl phosphates MONSANTO CO 15 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970 28 Jan 1971] 58254/71 Headings C2P and C2C [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein each R is H, C 4-18 alkyl or a group of formula Ar-C(R<SP>1</SP>) 2 - where Ar is aryl and each R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl such that the C(R<SP>1</SP>) 2 group contains 3-13 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one R is Ar-C(R<SP>1</SP>) 2 -. The invention further comprises mixtures comprising phosphate esters of the above formula such that 2-45 mole per cent of the total R's are C 4-18 alkyl groups, 2-45 mole per cent are Ar-C(R<SP>1</SP>) 2 - groups and 50-90 mole per cent are hydrogen atoms. The above compounds and mixtures are conventionally prepared by reacting appropriate phenols (including alkali metal salts thereof) or mixtures thereof sequentially or simultaneously with a phosphorus oxyhalide in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. Ca, Mg or Al or a chloride of Mg, Al, Fe or Sn. The mixtures can also be prepared by blending the individual components. A number of specific p-(α,α-dialkylbenzyl)- phenols (wherein one of the alkyl groups is Me or Et and the other is Me, Et, Pr<SP>n</SP>, Pr<SP>i</SP> or Bu<SP>n</SP>) are prepared by reacting phenol with appropriate phenylalkenes.

This invention relates to a composition comprising: (A) a major amount of a fluorine-containing hydrocarbon containing one or two carbon atoms; and (B) a minor amount of a soluble tertiary amide represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein a is one or two, provided that when a is one, R is a hydrocarbyl group or a hydrocarbylpolyoxyalkylene group, and when a is two, R is a hydrocarbylene group; each R 2 is independently hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; b is one or two; X is oxygen or N--R 3 ; R 3 is a hydrocarbyl group having 1 to about 18 carbon atoms or --C(O)R 4 , R 4 is a hydrocarbyl group or a hydrocarbylpolyoxyalkylene alkyl group. The present invention provides compositions which are useful as refrigeration liquids in refrigerators and air-conditioners including auto, home and industrial air-conditioners. The invention provides tertiary amides which are compatible with fluorine-containing hydrocarbons used in refrigerators and air conditioners. The tertiary amides act as a lubricant for air-conditioners.

Aromatic compounds are alkylated with C₂₀-C₁₃₀₀ olefinic oligomers by contacting the oligomers and aromatic compounds with an acidic catalyst to produce novel alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon compositions useful as lubricant basestock and additives. The olefinic oligomers used as alkylating agents are prepared from 1-alkene oligomerization in contact with a reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support. In one embodiment, the aromatic compounds are alkylated with a mono-olefinic HVI-PAO dimer which is prepared as a product or by-product from 1-alkene oligomerization using reduced chromium oxide on solid support. The alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons retain the unique features of the alkylating olefinic oligomer and exhibit high viscosity index and low pour point. The novel alkylaromatic compositions show improved thermal stability; also, the compositions are useful as lubricant additives for improved antiwear properties, antioxidant and other properties.

A metal-fabricating lubricant, for use in such operations as the rolling, drawing and forging of metals, comprises a major proportion of a substantially non-aromatic waxy hydrocarbon and 20-40 per cent by weight of a liquid hydrocarbon boiling within the range 300-700 DEG F. The non-aromatic waxy hydrocarbon may be of petroleum origin or may be prepared by polymerisation of olefins or dehydration of long-chain fatty alcohols. The liquid hydrocarbon may be gas oil, mineral seal oil, kerosene, undecane or dodecane. A list of optional ingredients which may be present in the lubricant is given. This list is subdivided into the following headings:-Animal, vegetable and marine oils; fatty acids; esters of carboxylic acids with mono- and poly-hydric alcohols; esters of inorganic acids; phosphatidic materials; sulphur-containing extreme pressure materials such as dibenzyl disulphide, sulphurized fatty oils and sulphurized fatty acids; halogenated extreme pressure organic materials; naturally occurring and synthetic waxes. In the examples, lubricants are described consisting of gas oil and (a) non-aromatic short residue petroleum (b) non-aromatic microcrystalline slop wax, or (c) non-aromatic Pennsylvania cylinder stock slop wax. For comparison purposes a lubricant is described consisting of palm oil and non-aromatic microcrystalline slop wax. Specifications 565,333 and 569,520 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a metal-fabricating lubricant comprising a major proportion of a substantially non-aromatic waxy hydrocarbon and up to 40 per cent by weight of a light liquid hydrocarbon boiling below the lubricating oil range. Examples of suitable light liquid p hydrocarbons include petroleum naphtha cuts, mineral spirits, kerosene SO2 extract, petroleum ether, and paraffinic hydrocarbons such as normal hexane, dimethyl pentane, octane and isooctane. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
