The invention provides dispersants and dispersant viscosity index improvers which include polymers of conjugated dienes which have been hydrogenated, functionalized, optionally modified, and post treated. The dispersant substances include a copolymer of two different conjugated dienes. The polymers are selectively hydrogenated to produce polymers which have highly controlled amounts of unsaturation, permitting highly selective functionalization. The polymers may be blended with lower molecular weight components. Also provided are lubricant fluids, such as mineral and syntheti c oils, which have been modified in their dispersancy and/or viscometric properties by means of the dispersant substances of the invention. The addition of minor amounts of lower molecular weight ocmponents improves compatibility and reduces haze. Also provided are methods of modifying the dispersancy and/or viscometric properties of lubricating fluids such as mineral and synthetic lubricating oils. The dispersant substances may also include a carrier fluid to provide dispersant concentrates.

This invention relates to a composition, comprising: (A) a compound represented by the formula (A-I) wherein in Formula (A-I), G1 and G2 are independently R, OR, SR or NRR wherein each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group, X1 and x2 are independently O or S, and n is zero to 3; and (B) an acylated nitrogencontaining compound having a substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (C) a phosphorus compound. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (D) an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulfur acid, carboxylic acid or phenol. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (E) a thiocarbamate. These compositions are useful in providing lubricating compositions and functional fluids with enhanced antiwear properties.

This invention relates to novel compositions of matter that are lube oils comprising an oil/hydrocarbon soluble fullerene grafted amine-containing polymers and a suitable base oil and, optionally other suitable additives for use as a lubricating oil. This invention also relates to the method of using the fullerene grafted amine-containing polymer itself as additives to base oils. The graft is made by reacting a fullerene with a primary or secondary amine-containing polymer, preferably hydrocarbon containing polymers. Suitable starting polymers are those containing primary or secondary amino groups, e.g., EPDM amine, PIB-amine, PIBSA-PAM, and Mannich based polymers. The lube oil compositions are made by adding an effective amount of the polymer, and optionally, other suitable additives to a base oil typically on an active ingredient basis of from about 0.01 to about 20 wt. %.

A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

This invention relates to shear stable lubricating compositions, particularly multigrade oils for crankcase lubrication of gasoline and diesel engines. Multigrade crankcase oils are formulated with an ashless dispersant comprising an oil soluble polymeric hydrocarbon backbone having functional groups in which the hydrocarbon backbone is derived from an ethylene alpha-olefin (EAO) copolymer or alpha-olefin homo- or copolymer having an Mn of from 500 to 7000. They provide better fuel economy and better starting at cold temperatures. More economical multigrade crankcase oils may also be blended with less shear stable VMs for improved economy, with a possibility of employing a wider range of polymers. Oils may be blended having extremely good oil shear stability for the most demanding applications where high performance is required such as in turbocharged engines and racing engines, with reduced mechanical breakdown of the oil.

SUBSTANCE: the lubricating oil comprises (wt %): 0.5-1.0 dispersing additive; 0.01-2 metal salt of dialkyldithiophosphoric acid; up to 1000 mineral oil or oil containing additives. The dispersing additive is a product of reaction of 0.7-0.95 equivalent of alkylenepolyamine per equivalent of polyisobutylene succinic acid containing 1.3-4 groups of succinic acid per equivalent weight of polyisobutylene having a mean numerical molecular weight of 1300-5000. A process of making a polydiorganosiloxane-silica foundation mixture from a free-flowing, powdered, surface-modified, reinforcing silica-polydiorganosiloxane concentrate used to make, for example, RTV silicone sealant compositions which have non-sag properties. The foundation mixtures are made by combining, mixing, and heating a reinforcing silica filler and a surface modifying agent to a temperature of >90° C. to <180° C. using 0.1 to 0.5 parts by weight of the surface modifying agent per one part by weight of the silica. Polydiorganosiloxane is added gradually to the resulting fluidized filler over a time period of less than 10 minutes to obtain the free flowing powdered reinforcing silica-polydiorganosiloxane concentrate. The foundation mixture is obtained by massing the concentrate and adding more polydiorganosiloxane to obtain a mixture which has from 8 to 20 weight percent silica filler. RTV silicone sealant compositions can be obtain in 10 to 15 minutes from the start of making the surface modified silica filler to the complete sealant composition.

These compositions provide improved frictional properties to lubricating composition while maintaining the extreme pressure protection of the lubricant. The lubricating compositions have good thermal stability.

More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and at least 2.0% by weight of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN< group, and wherein said substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a poly-alkene, said polyalkene being characterized by an Mn value of about 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4.5, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) from about 0.05 to about 5% by weight of a mixture of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids wherein in at least one of the dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids, one of the hydrocarbyl groups (C-1) is an iso-propyl or secondary butyl group, the other hydrocarbyl group (C-2) contains at least five carbon atoms, and at least about 20 mole percent of all of the hydrocarbyl groups present in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups or mixtures thereof, provided that at least about 25 mole percent of the hydrocarbyl groups in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups, or mix-tures thereof when the lubrication oil compositions comprise less than about 2.5% by weight of (B). This combination of components provides for synergistic fuel economy effects particularly when used as components in automotive crankcase lubricants also containing conventional additive packages, which effects are not observed in oil which contains one or the other of these components alone.

Lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines which comprise (A) at least about 60 % by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity, (B) at least about 2.0 % by weight of at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN< group, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent group, and (C) from about 0.01 to about 2 % by weight of at least one basic alkali metal salt of sulfonic or carboxylic acid. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain (D) at least one metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate and/or (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative composition, and/or (F) at least one partial fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol.

An effective way is described for overcoming the shudder problem associated with continuous slip torque converter clutches for use in automatic transmissions, especially shudder which occurs with new friction materials before break-in. To do this, an ATF is used in which the friction modifier system consists essentially of (i) an N-aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted diethanoiamine in which the N-aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituent is at least one straight chain aliphatic hydrocarbyl group free of acetylenic unsaturation and having in the range of 14 to 20 carbon atoms, and (ii) an N-aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted trimethylenediamine in which the N-aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituent is at least one straight chain aliphatic hydrocarbyl group free of acetylenic unsaturation and having in the range of about 14 to about 20 carbon atoms. The ATF is devoid of any tertiary amine friction modifier component and any C12-36 aliphatic hydrocarbyl succinimide or succinamide friction modifier. Specified relative proportions and concentrations of (i) to (ii) are used.

A lubricating oil composition comprising oil, and an additive combination comprising a poly alpha-olefin polymer dispersant with a number average molecular weight above 2500, and a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate sufficient to yield a phosphorous content of up to 0.1 percent weight based on the total weight of the oil. The poly alpha-olefin polymer can be ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer such as ethylene-1-butene or ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine. Preferably, the ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine has a number average molecular weight of about 3300.

A lubricant composition suitable for fuel injected tyro-stroke cycle engines includes an oil of lubricating viscosity, an amount, sufficient to reduce or prevent piston scuffing, of a mixture of (A) at least one phenol selected from (A-1) an aminophenol and (A-2) a reaction product of a nitrophenol and an amino compound, and (B) at least one Mannich dispersant, amine dispersant, nitrogen-containing carboxylic dispersant, or ester dispersant. The composition further includes an amount, sufficient to reduce degradation of the lubricant composition upon exposure to oxygen or oxides of nitrogen, of a nitrogen-containing inhibitor, a hindered phenol inhibitor, or a sulfur-containing organic inhibitor.
