The invention comprises the di-n-decyl esters of m- and p-phenylenediacetic acids, which are used as lubricants. Details are given of their physical properties and preparation from the acid and alcohol with an esterification catalyst such as p-toluenesulphonic acid. The acid may be prepared from xylylene dichloride by conversion into the dicyanide and hydrolysis. The xylylene dichloride may be obtained by (1) chlorinating xylene; (2) chloromethylating benzene in two stages; or (3) chlorinating toluene and chloromethylating the resulting benzyl chloride. An example is given of the chloromethylation of benzyl chloride to p-xylylene dichloride, conversion to p-xylylene dicyanide with aqueous alcoholic sodium cyanide, hydrolysis to p-phenylenediacetic acid and esterification with 1-decanol. Additives for lubricating oils comprise hydroxy esters produced by esterifying the partial ester of a di- or poly-hydric alcohol with a fatty acid of at least 6 carbon atoms with an aliphatic hydroxy polycarboxylic acid containing not more than 3 carboxyl groups and not more than 6 carbon atoms and having at least 1 hydroxyl group not more than 2 carbon atoms removed from a carboxyl group, the proportions of reactants being such that the number of free hydroxyl groups of the partial ester is equal to the number of carboxyl groups in the aliphatic hydroxy acid. The fatty acid preferably contains 10-20 carbon atoms. Mineral oil for cutting may contain 1 per cent of the esters, e.g. di-(glycol mono-laurate, stearate or oleate)-malate, tartrate or citrate. A lubricating oil composition for internal combustion engines is provided consisting of a base oil principally consisting of a hydrocarbon oil which has a dynamic viscosity of 2-20 mm2/s at 100°C and contains 3 wt% or less aromatic components in total, 45 wt% or more one- and two-ring naphthenes in total, 50 wt ppm or less sulfur and 50 wt ppm or less nitrogen, to which are added, with respect to the total weight of the composition, 0.02-0.2 wt% as molybdenum of molybdenum dithiocarbamate, 0.02-0.15 wt% as phosphorus of zinc dithiophosphate, and 0.05-3 wt% of phenol-based antioxidant. The lubricating oil composition according to the invention has a low friction coefficient, which is maintained for a prolonged period even after oxidation by nitrogen oxides.

Case 7739(2) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE OIL-SOLUBLE POLYALKYLENE GLYCOLS A sequential block copolymer containing: (i) a moiety R1X derived from a starter molecule having at least one active hydrogen wherein R1 is either an alkyl or alkaryl group having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, X is O,S or N, (ii) a polymeric block derived from at least one alkylene oxide of formula CxH2xO wherein x is an integer from 2 to 4, and at least 50 mole % of said polymeric block is derived from an alkylene oxide where x is 3 or 4, and (iii) a polymeric block derived from at least one alkylene oxide of formula CyH2yO wherein y is an integer in the range from 6 to characterised in that the sequential block copolymer has the formula: R1X-[(CyH2yO)m - (CxH2xO)n - H]q (I) wherein R1, X, y and x are as defined above, q is 1 when X is O or S, q is 2 when X is N; and m and n are such that the molecular weight is in the range from 600 to 4000 and the (CyH2yO) polymeric block (ii) derived from the alkylene oxide of formula CyH2yO forms from 1 to 40% by weight of the copolymer and the polymeric block derived from the alkylene oxide of formula CyH2yO constitutes the first polymeric block of the sequential block copolymer and is linked directly to the moiety R1Xis described. The alkylene oxide CxH2xO is preferably propylene oxide. The copolymer can be prepared by a two step process in which a starter molecule R1X(R2)q is reacted with CyH2yO to give an intermediate product which is then reacted with CxH2xO.

The nonpolar part of compound (I) of the formula (II) contains at least 9 carbon atoms. The invention also relates to the preparation of such engine oils and to the use of alkyl alkoxylates of formula (I) for the reduction of deposit formation.

Novel sulphurized compounds, their preparation and use. The compounds are based on the general formula {[R-Sx-(CH2)n-]z CH3-z-(CH2)p-}2 Sy, in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, optionally functionalized; x is a number equal to or greater than 1; z is an integer equal to 1 or 2; when z = 1, n is an integer from 0 to 3 and p is an integer from 0 to 3, with n + p being an integer from 0 to 3; when z = 2, n is an integer from 1 to 3 and p is an integer from 0 to 3; and y is a number equal to or greater than 1, at least one of the numbers x and y being strictly greatly than 1. The sulphurized compounds can be used as extreme pressure or wear prevention additives in lubricating oils, in particular in oils for gear systems and those used in working metal.

A multipurpose functional fluid which is comprised of a major amount of a hydrocarbon oil and a minor amount, sufficient to improve characteristics of the fluid of a novel additive. The aditive is comprised of a calcium salt complex, a group II metal dithiophosphate salt, a borated epoxide and a carboxylic solubilizer. The calcium salt is preferably in the form of an overbased calcium sulfonate salt, the antiwear agent is preferably in the form of a zinc dithiophosphate salt, the borated epoxide is preferably the reaction product of boric acid and a 16 carbon 1,2-epoxide and the carboxylic solubilizer is preferably in the form of a reaction product of an acylating agent containing a substituted hydrocarbyl-based substituent containing about 12 to 500 carbon atoms. Other components such as viscosity improvers and anti-foaming agent are generally present in the fluid. The resulting fluid has improved low temperature fluidity and filterability, improved EP/antiwear performance, excellent friction improving properties, antichatter capability as well as being capable of passing hydraulic/transmission tests, power steering and brake capacity tests. These features are maintained simultaneously without harming other desirable performance characteristics of the fluid. The EP/antiwear performance characteristics are maintained concurrently with the anticorrosion characteristics and transmission performance capabilities. The improved water tolerance is maintained concurrently with the improved EP performance characteristics.

Specific compounds claimed are 2,4,6-tri (3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) phenol; 3,31, 5,51-tetra (3,5-di-t - aryl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl)-4, 41-dihydroxy-biphenol and 2,21-bis [3,5-di-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) - 4 - hydroxphenyl] propane, but other compounds including those containing a naphthalene ring, are described, The compounds of the invention are prepared by reacting the appropriate phenol not substituted by groups (b) but having at least two replaceable hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring(s), with a 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol having at least one alpha branched alkyl group, or an alkyl ether thereof with not more than four carbon atoms in the alkoxy group, in an inert solvent in presence of sulphuric acid or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst.
