Lubricants having a low coefficient of friction and causing low surface wear consist of at least 1 per cent of organic compounds not containing metallic atoms and consisting of at least three substituted or unsubstituted rings interconnected directly or indirectly, dissolved or suspended in organic liquid or mixed with known lubricants. The rings are preferably interconnected by aliphatic radicles or non-metallic inorganic atoms or groups of atoms. Compounds containing atoms, groups of atoms or radicles capable of adhering physically or chemically to the metal surface to be lubricated, such as S, P, halogen, OH, COOH, CHO, CH3, CH, NH, NC and NO2, are preferred. In examples, wear is minimized by using a solution of 10 per cent of di-benzylidene benzidine in methyl cyclohexanol oxalate, or by adding sextol phthalate to a lubricating oil, or by using a solution of 5 per cent of triphenyl carbinol or tricresyl phosphate. The clay may be rendered oleophilic with an imidazoline or an amino-amide (many examples being given). The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. bis(2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate, aliphatic silicates, fluorates or phosphates. The grease may also contain diphenyl amine, phenyl-alpha or beta-naphthylamine, an alkali metal nitrite, the reaction product of a terpene with a phosphrous halide or water. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 960,059.

FIELD: chemistry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to steel cold rolling. The oil-in-water type lubricant includes an oil-in-water emulsion. A fluid composition suitable for use as an aircraft hydraulic fluid is disclosed. The fluid composition comprises a fire resistant phosphate ester base stock comprising between about 10% and about 100% by weight of a trialkyl phosphate, between about 0% and about 70% by weight of a dialkyl aryl phosphate, and from about 0% to about 25% by weight of an alkyl diaryl phosphate, with the proviso that the sum of the proportionate amount of each base stock component must equal 100%. The alkyl substituents of the trialkyl phosphate, the dialkyl aryl phosphate, and the alkyl diaryl phosphate contain between 3 and 8 carbon atoms, preferably between 4 and 8 carbon atoms, more preferably between 4 and 5 carbon atoms, and are bonded to the phosphate moiety via a primary carbon. It is still further preferred that the alkyl substituents of the trialkyl phosphate, the dialkyl aryl phosphate, and the alkyl diaryl phosphate are isoalkyl groups. The fluid composition further comprises an acid scavenger, an anti-erosion additive, a viscosity index improver, and an antioxidant. A novel additive combination comprises a high molecular weight butyl/hexyl methacrylate viscos ity index improver, a perfluoroalkylsulfonate anti-erosion additive, a 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate or a diepoxide acid scavenger, a di(alkylphenyl)amine, and a phenolic antioxidant comprising a mixture of a 2,4,6-trialkylphenol and a hindered polyphenol compound selected from the group consisting of bis(3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyaryl)methane, 1,3,5-trialkyl-2,4,6-tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyaryl)benzene and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the fluid composition further comprises a benzotriazole derivative as a copper corrosion inhibitor, and a 4,5-dihydroimidazole derivative, as an iron cor rosion inhibitor and to enhance the stability of the fluid.

It has now been discovered that functional fluids characterized as effective over a wide range of temperature including very high temperatures can be prepared which comprise (A) a major amount of at least one synthetic base oil; and minor amounts of (B) at least one phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of (B-1) metal-free, hindered phenols substituted with at least one alkyl group containing at least about 6 carbon atoms, and alkylene coupled derivatives thereof; (B-2) neutral and basic alkaline earth metal salts of hindered phenols which are not alkylene- or sulfur-coupled; (B-3) metal-free alkyl phenol sulfides or neutral and basic alkaline earth metal salts of alkyl phenol sulfides; and (B-4) neutral and basic alkaline earth metal salts of alkylene-coupled phenols; and (C) at least one non-phenolic antioxidant. When the phenolic compound (B) is a metal-free or neutral phenolic compound, it is preferred to include as an additional component, (D) at least one basic alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt of a sulfonic or carboxylic acid, or mixtures thereof. In one preferred embodiment, the high temperature functional fluids of the invention are free of ashless dispersants or metal salts of dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acids, or both. The lubricating compositions of the present invention are particularly useful at high temperatures such as above 260 °C including high temperature applications of up to about 370 °C or even 540 °C or higher. The functional fluids of the invention retain their lubricating properties and are thermally stable at the very high temperatures.

These acylating agents are characterized in that the polyalkenes from which they are derived have a Mn value of about 1300 to about 5000 and a Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4. The acylating agents are further charac-terized by the presence within their structure of at least 1.3 groups derived from the dibasic, carboxylic reactant for each equivalent weight of the groups derived from the poly-alkene. The acylating agents can be reacted with a further reactant subject to being acylated such as polyethylene polyamines and polyols (e.g., pentaerythritol) to produce derivatives useful per se as lubricant additives or as intermediates to be subjected to post-treatment with various other chemical compounds and compositions, such as epoxides, to produce still other derivatives useful as lubricant additives.

A grease composition having a worked penetration below 260 mn/10/77 DEG F. and a running-in temperature below 30 DEG F. (in a bearing test described in the Specification) comprises a lubricating oil containing 15-40 wt. % of a mixture of sodium crotonate and the sodium soap of a C14-22 unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, the molar ratio of crotonate : soap being between 0.1 : 1 and 10 : 1, plus 0.1-15 wt. % of di- or tri-sodium phosphate, the three sodium salts being heated to 300-425 DEG F. for 1/3 -4 hours in admixture with at least a dispersing portion of the lubricating oil. The lubricating oil may have a viscosity of 40-140 SUS/210 DEG F. and a V.I. of 40-120. Mineral oils are preferred but animal, vegetable and synthetic oils may also be used, e.g. silicone fluids, diesters such as di-l-ethyl-hexyl sebacate, complex esters such as di-l-ethyl hexanol/polyethylene glycol/adipic acid, and phosphonates.
