A lubricant for preventing corrosion of working parts of rock drills &c. by corrosive liquids or vapours comprises a lubricating oil containing (a) a blown fatty oil or wool wax, and (b) one or more of the soaps of aluminium, barium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, nickel, potassium, sodium, thallium or zinc added in such proportions that the lubricant is capable of absorbing the corrosive liquid or vapour to form an emulsion in which the oil is in the continuous phase. The metal soaps are preferably added in an amount exceeding 0,25 per cent of the weight of the oil. Suitable fatty acids for forming the metal soaps comprise oleic, palmitic, stearic, mixed fatty acids from vegetable fish or animal oils, carboxylic acids of cyclic compounds, naphthenic acids. Soaps of the alkali metals are included in such small amounts that the emulsions are of the water-in-oil type. A jelly-like composition which is semisolid and adhesive at ordinary temperatures comprises a halogenated cyclic hydrocarbon admixed with a soap and converted by heating and agitation &c. to a gel state. The composition may be employed as high temperature lubricants, for dielectric and insulating purposes and as adhesive media in gas-cleaning apparatus. Suitable soaps are those of oleic, stearic or palmitic acids with aluminium, lead, zinc or sodium. The material is heated to about 100 DEG C. and 3--15 per cent of soap is slowly added with energetic stirring. Talc or like solid unctuous substance is applied to ribbons of foil made of or containing cellulose derivatives, and the ribbons are then wrapped on electric conductors such as wires, cables, ribbons, bus-bars, and coils. For example, 1 lb. of ammonium oleate, 1 lb. of ammonium stearate, 0,25 lb. of copper oleate, 7,75 lb. of a mixture of vegetable oils, and 90 lb. of mineral oil are used. A suitable mixture of vegetable oils is made from equal weights of olive, ground-nut and soya oils. Alkali metal or alkaline earth metal soaps may be used as the metal soap.

Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

Greases consist of a lubricating oil thickened with alkali or alkaline earth metal soaps of fatty or wax acids with a C22+ chain length and an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of benzoic acid, said salt and soaps having the same metal cation, the amount of benzoic acid salt (calculated as free acid) being 5-80 wt. per cent of the weight of the soaps present (calculated as free acid); together with a hydroxide of an alkaline earth or Group III metal. Lubricants specified are refined machine oil and an adipic acid/butylene glycol ester. The examples describe benzoic acid and montan acid being reacted with either sodium aluminate or barium hydroxide.

Tentative methods for preparing lubricating grease from this new type of titanium complex soap thickener have been described. High performance lubricating grease resulted from titanium terphthalate stearate complex soap thickener, exhibited excellent mechanical stability, high drop point, excellent oxidation stability, very good extreme pressure and antiwear properties, good water resistance and corrosion inhibiting characteristics.
