Смазочное и охлаждающее средство коробки передач содержит смесь воды и алифатического углеводорода, в которой суспендированы частицы графита. Преимущественно смесь содержит от 40 до 60 весовых процентов алифатического углеводорода или же содержащего такие углеводороды соединения, и от 2 до 20 весовых процентов графита в форме хлопьевидных частиц графита с размером зерен менее 12 микрометров. A lubricating oil additive is prepared by reacting at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100-140 DEG C., an oil solution of an oil-soluble sulphonate, an acidic phosphorus-containing hydrocarbon, and an alkyl phenol, with CO2 in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in sufficient proportions to ensure a final product that is alkaline. The sulphonate is preferably a petroleum sulphonate, e.g. of molecular weight 350-600 and may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphonate. The product may have an alkalinity index greater than 50. The phosphorus-containing hydrocarbon is preferably a phosphosulphurised hydrocarbon and may be derived from a wide range of saturated and unsaturated, cyclic and acyclic hydrocarbons including petroleum fractions; preferred are polyolefines, e.g. polyisobutylene of molecular weight 600-300. An extreme-pressure lubricating composition contains a lubricating oil and (1) a chlorinated hydrocarbon and (2) a minor proportion of a sulphur-containing fraction from the pyrolysis or distillation of bituminous shale, preferably a fraction containing from 13 to 25 per cent of sulphur mainly present as high molecular weight alkyl thiophenes and boiling above 200 DEG C, preferably between 250 DEG C ano 300 DEG C. Alternatively, a fraction as at (2) above may be chlorinated or condensed with a polychlorinated hydrocarbon, and the product used instead of or with addition (1). Amines mentioned are aniline, diethylene triamine, 3-di-n-amylaminepropylamine, monoethanolamine, phenylethanolamine, aminoethylethanolamine and nitron (1,4-diphenyl-3,5-endoanilino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole).ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of a fluoborate RxHBF4, where R is an amine and x may be 1 or more. The hydrocarbon oil may be of natural or synthetic origin. Fluoborates mentioned are those of diethylene triamine, nitron, aniline, aminoethylethanolamine, 3 - di - n - amylaminopropylamine, monoethanolamine and phenylethanolamine. Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.
