Hydrocarbon oils, with or without neutral or neutralized animal or vegetable oils, are intimately mixed with potassium oleate, and glycerine, in the presence of not substantially more than 30 per cent of the total mass of water, to form a composition, usually of jelly form, which is miscible with water to form a stable emulsion and which can again be dried without losing its emulsifiable properties. The emulsions so formed are utilizable as boring or cutting oils or as textile lubricants. The quantities of glycerine and potassium oleate employed are preferably within the limit ratios 2 : 1 and 10 : 1, the maximum quantity of oil permissible for stability in these circumstances being ten times and twenty-two times the quantity of soap respectively. The composition is preferably homogenized before mixing with water. New liquid thickeners for aqueous liquids are obtained by capping a liquid straight chain polyoxyalkylene compound derived from ethylene oxide or ethylene oxide and at least one other lower alkylene oxide by reacting said alkylene oxides with at least one active hydrogen-containing initiator having only one active hydrogen atom. The new thickeners are prepared at a molecular weight of about 1000 to about 25,000 utilizing an alpha-olefin oxide having a carbon chain of about 12 to about 18 aliphatic carbon atoms. Both block and heteric polyoxyalkylene compounds are useful. Alternatively, the new thickeners can be made by copolymerizing ethylene oxide or mixed lower alkylene oxides in the presence of said alpha-olefin oxide. The new thickeners exhibit an unexpected increase in viscosity in aqueous systems as compared with prior art liquid polyether thickening agents. The alpha-olefin oxide modified polyether thickening agents of the invention are useful in both water-based and water-glycol based hydraulic fluids.

Настоящее изобретение относится к области смазочных материалов и, в частности, описывает смазочную композицию и способ ее приготовления и использования. Смазочная композиция включает базовое масло и диспергированные в нем частицы каучука, имеющего сшитую под действием излучения структуру, причем базовое масло является непрерывной фазой, а частицы каучука являются дисперсной фазой. Вязкость смазочной композиции по настоящему изобретению можно эффективно регулировать при изменении температуры. По сравнению со смазочной композицией, включающей химически сшитые частицы каучука, она имеет более низкую вязкость при низких температурах и более высокую вязкость при высоких температурах и имеет относительно высокий индекс вязкости, что может соответствовать требованиям при применении при температуре выше 200°C. This invention provides phyllosilicates and polyfunctional dispersants which can be manipulated to selectively control the viscosity of phyllosilicate slurries. The polyfunctional dispersants used in the present invention, which include at least three functional groups, increase the dispersion and exfoliation of phyllosilicates in polymers and, when used in conjunction with phyllosilicate slurries, significantly reduce the viscosity of slurries having high concentrations of phyllosilicates. The functional groups of the polyfunctional dispersants are capable of associating with multivalent metal cations and low molecular weight organic polymers, which can be manipulated to substantially increase or decrease the viscosity of the slurry in a concentration dependent manner. The polyfunctional dispersants of the present invention can also impart desirable properties on the phyllosilicate dispersions including corrosion inhibition and enhanced exfoliation of the phyllosilicate platelets.
