Oils derived from fatty hydroxyacids, or substances containing them, are heated with a polymerization catalyst, and the product is heated under reduced pressure with an alcohol, preferably in the presence of an esterification catalyst. The first treatment is effected at 150--300 DEG C. at atmospheric or somewhat raised or reduced pressure in the absence of alkaline compounds and alcohols and with or without the use of a current of inert gas; the polymerization catalyst may be a compound of an element of the third, fourth or eighth periodic group, and may be supported on active charcoal. As esterification catalysts in the second treatment, use may be made of esters of mineral acids, particularly sulphuric esters of alcohols and of organic hydroxyacids. Castor oil alone or mixed with mineral oil is heated to above 100 DEG C. in presence of phosphoric acid and/or acid esters thereof, whereby it loses water and becomes soluble in mineral oil and on prolonged treatment acquires drying properties resembling those of linseed or tung oil. Temperatures between 150 and 350 DEG C., especially 200-260 DEG C., are suitable. Up to nearly 3 molecules of water may be removed. The solutions in mineral oil are used as lubricants, and the drying castor oil is used in the manufacture of drying artificial resins, e.g. along with polybasic carboxylic acid and polyhydric alcohols, and for or with linseed or tung oil in paints or other coating materials. Disclosed is an ultra-low SAPS lubricating oil composition comprising: an oil of lubricating viscosity; an aromatic dicarboxylic acid treated dispersant supplying at least 0. 30 wt% of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid to said lubricating oil composition; an ashless peroxide decomposer present at a treat rate of from about 0.4 to 5.0 wt%; a metal deactivator wherein the metal deactivator is present at a treat rate of greater than 0.08 wt%; wherein said lubricating oil composition contains less than 1000 ppm sulfur, less than 300 ppm phosphorus and less than 0.25 wt% sulfated ash.

Смазочная композиция включает базовое масло и диспергированные в нем частицы каучука, имеющего сшитую под действием излучения структуру, причем базовое масло является непрерывной фазой, а частицы каучука являются дисперсной фазой. Вязкость смазочной композиции по настоящему изобретению можно эффективно регулировать при изменении температуры. По сравнению со смазочной композицией, включающей химически сшитые частицы каучука, она имеет более низкую вязкость при низких температурах и более высокую вязкость при высоких температурах и имеет относительно высокий индекс вязкости, что может соответствовать требованиям при применении при температуре выше 200°C. Castor oil is modified in order to increase its miscibility with mineral lubricating oils and other petroleum hydrocarbon fractions, by destructively distilling it in the presence of a lesser amount, e.g. 10 to 15 per cent by weight of sodium chloride, clay, such as fuller's earth, or bentonite, diatomaceous earth, aluminium hydroxide, anhydrous silica or silica gel until substantially all the oil has undergone distillation, and condensing the distillate vapours. The castor oil and the modifying agent are kept out of contact with brass or copper during the distillation and the retort is only charged, e.g. up to about 65 per cent of its capacity, with oil and modifying agent before distilling each batch. The present invention relates to the field of lubricant, and specifically provides a lubricant composition and its preparation method and use. The lubricant composition comprises a base oil and rubber particles having radiation crosslinked structure dispersed therein, wherein the base oil is continuous phase and the rubber particles are dispersed phase. The viscosity of the lubricant composition of the present invention can be effectively adjusted as temperature changes. As compared with the lubricant composition comprising chemically crosslinked rubber particles, it has a lower viscosity at low temperatures and a higher viscosity at high temperatures, and has a relatively high viscosity index, which can meet the application requirements at the temperature above 200°C. In addition, the lubricant composition of the present invention also has excellent antiwear and friction-reducing properties.

Hydrocarbon mixtures, defined below and boiling in the range 300 DEG to 700 DEG F. are irradiated with neutrons and g -rays having an energy above 1 Mev. obtained from a nuclear reactor, at 100 DEG to 600 DEG F. and a dose rate above 1 equivalent megaroentgen per hour, until 100 to 1000 equivalent megaroentgens have been absorbed, to obtain a lubricating oil. The hydrocarbon mixture comprises 60 to 95% of saturated hydrocarbons, 5 to 40% of unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons, less than 2% of aromatics and less than 25% of naphthenes. Preferably there is separated from the irradiated mixture a fraction boiling above 700 DEG F. having a viscosity above 35 SSU at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index above 125 which may be used as a lubricating oil; a portion of said fraction boiling at 800 DEG to 1000 DEG F. may be blended with another lubricating oil to comprise 1-15% of the composition whereby an improved lubricating composition having a viscosity in the range of 40 to 60 SSU at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index above 115 may be obtained. The latter portion of said fraction preferably has a viscosity in the range of 1000 to 10,000 SSU at 210 DEG F. and may lower the pour point by at least 10 DEG F. The initial hydrocarbon subjected to irradiation may be obtained by catalytic cracking, e.g. at 850 DEG to 1050 DEG F., or by fluid coking, delayed coking, thermal cracking or steam cracking, e.g. at 800 DEG to 1400 DEG F. Where a catalytically cracked distillate is used it may be first separated by distillation and then treated to remove aromatics by a conventional liquid extraction process and then further cleaned up with a solid absorbent; where thermal cracking is employed, it is preferred to extract the desired straight chain paraffins and olefins from the cracked mixture with a molecular sieve. Viscous oils of high viscosity index, used as lubricants or additions to lubricating oils, are obtained by polymerizing gaseous alkenes at increased pressures and at temperatures above 125 DEG C. to products containing large proportions of gasoline, removing the gasoline, and then further polymerizing the residue in presence of a catalyst at temperatures below 125 DEG C. and at pressures lower than those used in the first stage. The product may be refined, e.g. by hydrogenation, sulphuric acid, or bleaching earth. Alkenes specified are propene, butenes, mixtures thereof, and gas mixtures containing them as the larger part of the unsaturated constituents, e.g. gases obtained by cracking paraffin wax or mineral oils or residues. The polymerization of the higher-boiling fraction may take place in presence of benzene, naphthalene, or mineral oils rich in aromatics. Suitable catalysts are aluminium chloride and boron fluoride. Catalysts are preferably present in the first polymerization; phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, benzene-sulphonic acid, bleaching earth, and floridine are suitable. Both polymerizations may be in stages. In an example, cracking gas is passed over a phosphoric acid-kieselguhr catalyst at 200--250 DEG C. and 10--15 atmos. until 90 per cent of the olefines is converted; the product is distilled to 180 DEG C., 87,5 per cent passing over as a high anti-knock gasoline; the residue is polymerized at 100 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure for 5 hours in presence of 4 per cent of aluminium chloride.ALSO:Viscous oils of high viscosity index, used as lubricants or additions to lubricating oils, are obtained by polymerizing gaseous olefines at raised pressures and at temperatures above 125 DEG C. to products consisting largely of gasolene, removing the gasolene, and further polymerizing the residue in presence of a catalyst at lower pressures and at temperatures below 125 DEG C.
