A method of withdrawing waste gas from a metallurgical converter comprises collecting the waste gas by means of a water-cooled hood spaced from the mouth of the converter and inducing a flow of gas round the gap between the hood and the converter mouth. As shown, a water-cooled hood 2 is spaced from a converter 1 by a gap 7 and a second hood 3 surrounds the end of the hood 2. A pipe 5 leads to the interior 4 of the hood 3 and a gas, e.g. nitrogen, under pressure supplied through the pipe 5 escapes through a gap 6 between the hoods 2 and 3, or suction may be applied to the pipe 5, in each case air is prevented from entering the gap 7. The waste gas passes through a conduit 8 and the conduit and the hood may be raised by a jack 10. The waste gas may be used as a fuel or for the synthesis of organic compounds.

The invention relates to a method for dry dust removal and dry cleaning of gas laden with dust and pollutants, as in gas incident to pig iron production systems in the production of pig iron, or incident to iron production systems in the production of iron or in gas produced in coal gasification systems, and to a device for carrying out the method. In the process, an additive comprising reagent and alternatively adsorbent material is added to the gas stream prior to the beginning of the dust removal following a preliminary separation step and after the temperature of the gas stream is adjusted to a temperature greater than 60°C and less than a temperature that would cause damage to the equipment performing the dust removal. This additive cleans the gas stream and is removed from the gas stream together with the solid particles that were present in the gas stream prior to the addition of the additive upon removal of the dust.

The retractable part of the skirt is pref. mounted on a trolley which travels along a horizontal track. A seal is used between the moving and fixed parts of the skirt. Used in the refining of steel, where the skirt and hood collect the gases irrespective of the position of the converter. The thermal capacity in the exhaust gas can be exploited, and noxious gases do not contaminate the atmos.

Two-step knife blade production. This production of a knife blade avoids the conventional first two steps of drawing and upsetting. The blanks are cut side by side obliquely along the surface of the steel sheet which is specially shaped so that it is of constant thickness at a point nearer to one edge than the other end of decreasing thickness on either side of this point. The joint piece is thus formed by a single compressing operation and each blank is then compressed further to form the blade, the joint piece, and the tongue in a single step, followed by cutting of the bevels.

The off-gases pass into a stack 40 and a Venturi scrubber 41, thence to a secondary Venturi scrubber 44, and then either through valve 54 or to a stack 51 and torch 52. The skirt 28 can be adjusted either to allow air to enter the hood 27 and react with the off-gases, or to seal the hood. The scrubbed off gases are monitored by a partial pressure sensor 68 (for O 2 ) and an infra-red sensor 69 (for CO, CO 2 , and H 2 O), and when the off-gases reach the desired calorific value they are directed through pipe 53 and valves 58 to storage. The sensor 68 also. monitors changes in combustion conditions and shuts down the skirt 28 when stoichiometric conditions are achieved. When the converter 10 is tilted, the gases are collected by auxilliary hood 66. Powdered materials, e.g. iron oxide, CaCO 3 , CaO, CaF2 may be introduced through the tuyeres from container 31.

A hood for aspirating combustion gases during decanting molten pig iron is displaceable at the decanting pit and at two or more locations (ladle positions) to aspire the dust laden gas given off during decanting.
