The body has a. surface coating to protect the surface from atmospheric oxidation during heat treatment thereof, the coating being formed by application of an intimate mixture consisting essentially of (a) from 3 to 6 parts by weight of an aqueous solution of potassium silicate which may have a viscosity of 30 to 40 degrees BÚ, (b) 3 to 8 parts by weight of aluminium powder, and (c) from ¢ to 2 parts by weight of sand; theaqueous solution, may be present in a. proportion of from. 1 : 1 to 1 : 2À5 of the sand.

As shown in Fig. 1, a coated screen 25 comprises a molybdenum screen formed with openings 26 defined by strands 27 of molybdenum having a coating deposited upon the strands 27 and completely enclosing the strands while retaining the openings 26. Preferably the coating is ceramic and comprises 80% alumina and 20% silica applied from a mixture containing 58% alumina-silica and 42% sodium hydroxide solution. The coating may be subsequently fused.

The invention relates to a method for obtaining a gel coating of refractory material on a substrate. The substrate is placed in contact with a sol of a refractory material, which can be transformed into a gel of this refractory material (the apparent density of the gel representing at least 40% of the theoretical density of the refractory material) and one turns the soil into gel by cooking. The coatings obtained can protect the substrate (against attack or deposits) or carry a catalytically active material and subsequently deposited.

On fabrique une pellicule vitreuse électriquement isolante sur une bande ou une tôle d'acier au silicium laminé à froid, qui possède une perméabilité magnétique supérieure à 1850 à 796 A/m après un recuit final à haute température développant une orientation du type cube sur arête. On applique une suspension aqueuse contenant de la magnésie, au moins un composé de bore, et jusqu'à 20 % d'oxyde de titane, par rapport au poids de la magnésie, on sèche le revêtement, et on soumet la bande ou tôle audit recuit final. La teneur en bore est dosée dans la gamme d'environ 0,07 % à environ 0,30 %, par rapport au poids de la magnésie, en fonction directe de la granulométrie et de l'activité vis-à-vis de l'acide citrique de la magnésie, et en fonction inverse de la densité apparente du revetement sec. Composition aqueuse de magnésie utilisée dans la fabrication de revêtements électriquement isolants sur de l'acier au silicium. On stabilise la viscosité et accroît la concentration d'une suspension aqueuse de magnésie, dans laquelle la magnésie possède une activité vis-à-vis de l'acide citrique inférieure à 200 secondes. The slurry is stable against settling for up to 10 hours and has a viscosity desired for use for coating with the aid of conventional means. From 10 to 100% of inactive magnesium oxide can be used, the remainder being active magnesium oxide (having a citric acid activity of from 20 to 40 seconds). Preferred phosphate compounds include monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate.

The alloy treated may be silicon-steel, and the coating is from 0À06 to 0À2 mils thick. Reference is made to Specification 1298410.

The coating of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic grains penetrate the layer of the abradable material over a depth of between 50 and 1000 μm.6. The bulk density of the gel is at least 40%, preferably at least 45%, of the theoretical density of the refractory material, and the sol is converted to a gel to provide the substrate with the gel coating. A sub-strate carrying an adherent coating of a gel of a refractory material is also described wherein the density of the gel is at least 40% of the theoretical density of the refractory material.

The invention is concerned with providing substrates with coatings obtainable from sols, for example to protect the substrate (such as in nuclear reactors or hydrocarbon cracking plant) or to provide a carrier for catalytically active material. Hitherto, coatings obtained from sols have had a high porosity and high surface area so that they have not been entirely satisfactory for the above applications. In the invention, dense, low-porosity coatings are provided by contacting the substrate with a sol of refractory material (e.g. CeO 2 or SiO 2 ) convertible to a gel of density at least 40% of the theoretical density of the refractory material, and converting the sol to the gel. Optionally, the gel may be converted to a ceramic coating by firing.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aqueous magnesia slurry for forming an insulative glass coating on silicon steel, wherein a substantial portion of the magnesia is inactive (a citric acid activity greater than 200 seconds), a decomposable phosphate compound is present within the range of 2% to 25% by weight calculated as P2O5, based on the dry weight of magnesia, and the magnesia concentration is at least 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter of slurry. The slurry is stable against settling for up to 10 hours and has a desirable viscosity for coating application by conventional means. From 10% to 100% inactive magnesia may be used with the remainder an active magnesia (citric acid activity of 20 to 40 seconds). Preferred phosphate compounds include monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, water soluble ammonium polyphosphate and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate.
