An anticorrosion ferrite-based pigment, derived from a hydrometallurgical purification process of EAF dust. EAF dust is generated in an electric arc furnace for carbon steel production by processing scrap metal, direct reduced iron and/or pre-reduced hematite, and using CaO-rich slag; from a condensation reaction of metals vapours of Fe, or Zn and of Mn, Mg, Si and/or Al, and suspended CaO particles and oxygen. The pigment contains a non-toxic amount of lead, and includes condensed metal oxides, comprising ferrites MOFe2.theta.3, M being Zn, Fe, Mn and Mg, and combinations thereof. The condensed oxides have ferrite structures preserved from the EAF dust, and form aggregates thereof. The pigment includes CaO entrapped by the ferrite structures and being partially available to react with humid air and/or water to protect the substrate against corrosion. The pigments are coated or uncoated. They are used for antifouling or paint formulations.

The present invention relates to a method for inhibiting stress corrosion cracking occurring on steam generator tubes in the secondary side of nuclear power plants and an inhibitor therefor. The method comprises supplying cerium boride as an inhibitor for stress corrosion cracking into the secondary feed water of the nuclear power plants. The method according to the present invention improves resistance of stress corrosion cracking three times or higher than no inhibitor, and two times or higher than the conventional inhibitor. In particular, the method according to the present invention shows a superior inhibiting effect in the lead-contaminated environment such that the complete inhibition of stress corrosion cracking can be achieved. As thus, the method can reduce the unexpected stop of operating nuclear power plants caused by the stress corrosion cracking on steam generator tubes, thereby reducing the cost required for maintaining and repairing the tubes.

A slag and corrosion control process is described. The process entails: identifying the location of at least one slagging problem area in a boiler; introducing a slag control chemical comprising magnesium oxide or hydroxide into combustion gases in a location identified as having a slagging problem; identifying the location of at least one corrosion problem area in a boiler; and introducing a corrosion control chemical comprising a sulfate salt, bisulfite salt, sulfuric acid, or sulfur into combustion gases in a location identified as having a corrosion problem. In operation, these slag deposits will be sufficiently friable to be removed by relatively moderate application of physical energy, thus saving time and reducing any damage to the tubes by the cleaning process. The slag deposits are less voluminous and less in weight and are removed quickly. It is an advantage of the invention that slag can be removed with little or no shut down of a boiler.

Examples of silicates which may be used are:-barium, cadmium, calcium, lead, magnesium, cobalt, zinc, iron, manganese, nickel and chromium. Preferably, the amount of silicate does not exceed 10 per cent. by weight of the paste or powder, the normal amount being .05-5 per cent. The silicate may be added to the paste or powder and mixed therewith or formed in situ by adding the required reactants and then mixing.

The methods of the present invention also provides inhibition of corrosion for carbon steel at corrosion rates of less than 0.3 mpy (mils per year), and less than 0.1 mpy for copper, copper alloy, and stainless steel alloys in highly concentrated (high dissolved solids) waters. The methods of the present invention comprise pretreatment removal of hardness ions from the makeup source water, maintenance of electrical conductivity, and elevating the pH level of the aqueous environment. Thereafter, specified water chemistry residual ranges are maintained in the aqueous system to achieve inhibition of scale and corrosion.

A method is disclosed of protecting heated aluminum based metals subject to heat transfer through the metal to a circulating aqueous cooling solution in contact therewith. The initially constituted cooling solution contains an alkali metal silicate in an adjusted amount above .2 gram per liter. The solution while functioning in the cooling system is then exposed to an alkali metal silicate glass causing the glass to progressively dissolve and stabilize the silicate at a level of at least .1 gram per liter. A film forming method of a corrosion resistant film , comprising:bringing a substrate made of aluminum into contact with an aqueous solution containing sulfate ions and fluoride ions; andheating the substrate to boil the aqueous solution on a surface of the substrate to form a corrosion resistant film containing oxygen, fluorine, and sulfur in the aluminum derived from the substrate on the surface of the substrate.2. The film forming method of the corrosion resistant film according to claim 1 ,wherein the substrate forms a wall portion of a storage portion that stores the aqueous solution as a part of a heat exchanger,wherein in the bringing, the storage portion is caused to store the aqueous solution, andwherein in the heating, a heat of a thermal fluid introduced to the heat exchanger and having a temperature higher than a boiling point of the aqueous solution is transmitted to the aqueous solution via the wall portion to boil the aqueous solution.3. The methods of the present invention comprise pretreatment removal of polyvalent metal ions from the makeup source water, maintenance of concentration of monovalent metal ions, and controlling pH at a minimum of 7.0 in the presence of an elevated temperature aqueous environment. Thereafter, specified water chemistry residual ranges are maintained in the aqueous system to achieve inhibition of scale and corrosion.
