An apparatus for tensioning warp threads of a loom comprises a warp beam from which the warp threads are withdrawn by means of a support beam and a deflection beam. The deflection beam is secured to the support beam by means of bending springs acting in the direction of the deflected warp threads. The bending or deflection length of the bending springs is adjustable for preselected setting of the warp thread tension in that the bending springs are supported at their bending or deflection side by means of a bending-resistant support plate which is adjustable in lengthwise direction. These measures provide for a purely mechanical, simple, easily adjustable and functionally reliable tensioning apparatus which is particularly suitable for the pile warp of a Terry weaving machine.

There is an apparatus (11) which guarantees the varying degree of tension of the shed branches (5, 6) of the shed (2) and which possesses guide bars (12, 13) arranged so as to be capable of oscillating alternately in the vertical plane. There is a compensating element (14) which is mounted between the guide bars (12, 13), with the possibility of periodic action on the warp threads (1) in order to lift these between the guide bars (12, 13) at the moment when the weft thread is beaten up (4). This makes it possible to generate a brief maximum load on the warp threads only at the moment of beating up (4) of the weft thread, thereby affording the possibility of reducing the breaking frequency of the warp threads (1) during weaving and guaranteeing the production of denser fabrics. <IMAGE>

The deflection beam is secured to the support beam by means of bending springs acting in the direction of the deflected warp threads. The bending or deflection length of the bending springs is adjustable for preselected setting of the warp thread tension in that the bending springs are supported at their bending or deflection side by means of a bending-resistant support plate which is adjustable in lengthwise direction. These measures provide for a purely mechanical, simple, easily adjustable and functionally reliable tensioning apparatus which is particularly suitable for the pile warp of a Terry weaving machine.
