The forwarding device for fabric in a high speed sewing machine, with a differential movement comprises a principal movement device and an auxiliary or secondary movement device, functioning synchronously. Ends of the handle material are folded under by the handle folding assembly and the handle then transferred in a folded condition from the handle folding assembly to a correct position on the border material. A double folded handle press holds each folded end of the handle material in place as each end is maneuvered under a sewing head needle to apply a stitch pattern to secure the folded ends to the border material. A rectangle of cloth is placed on a conveyer belt, and is then so positioned that an edge thereof extends over an edge of the conveyer belt, the latter feeding the cloth through a hemming machine, the cloth being simultaneously held down upon the conveyer belt, to form a line of duplicater marked stitching parallel to the edge of the belt, and the stitch chain is severed as the hemmed edge leaves the machine. As described, the rectangular piece of cloth is cut from a roll of cloth the two sides of which are initially hemmed, and the other two sides of the piece are hemmed in succession, to form a handkerchief, while the piece travels on the conveyer belt. An endless conveyer belt 15 is arranged with its upper run supported on a table 18. Rectangles of cloth having two opposite sides initially hemmed are laid on belt 15 with the unhemmed edges parallel to the edges of the latter. An edgepositioning means 25 moves a workpiece laterally till its right hand edge overlaps the edge of belt 15 by a predetermined amount. Said edge of the workpiece is then trimmed by cutting means 280, and is next hemmed by a sewing machine 200 while being simultaneously held down by means 175, the stitch chain finally being severed by means 325, and any tail at the end of the hem being removed by cutting means 350. The left hand edge is then similarly hemmed while the workpiece travels on the belt. In one form, the needle-holder takes the form of a plate c, and is held in place by a cam lever j or other suitable device. In another construction, a dovetailed strip k on the front edge of the needle-bar secures the front end of a carrier i, and the rear end is secured by a catch-lever o.

The zig-zag mechanism is coupled when a member 48 is raised to engage a pin 46 thereon in a bracket 42, the member being spring-biased downwardly to a decoupling position. The coupling member 48 is lifted by a cam 58 which, is biassed into the coupling position by a spring to lift the presser mechanism, however, lever 72 acting on lever 64. When lever 80 is raised 64 and cam 58 are pivoted anti-clockwise by link 84 and are locked in the decoupling position by a latch mechanism 70, 66. When the machine is to be used in the straight-stitch mode and the appropriate throat plate is fitted the parts are held in decoupled position, the latching pawl 70 being loaded by a spring 92. When the zig-zag throat plate 18A is in place, however, a switch 98 is allowed to close by a recess 100 in the throat plate and actuates a solenoid 94 which overcomes spring 92 and allows the jogging mechanism to be recoupled. The actuator 34 of the jogging mechanism may be cam-operated or may have an electromagnetic drive provided with a logic circuit for stopping the mechanism in a needle-centred position.

A thread winder unit, which is capable of winding thread of spools set on spool bars, is removably attached to a machine body. The sewing machine includes a feed motor for feeding the thread during sewing, an upper thread state detecting sensor disposed between the feed motor and the thread winder unit for detecting tensed thread, and a CPU for controlling thread winding operations based on a signal from the upper thread state detecting sensor. The sewing machine intermittently drives the feed motor in a reverse direction to that in the sewing to feed the thread toward the thread winder unit, every time the upper thread state detecting sensor detects the tensed thread, and the thread winder unit winds the fed thread around the spool. The CPU, recognizing the thread wound by a given amount, stops winding.

The arrangement comprises a sewing apparatus which is partially supported below a material-supporting table and which partially extends through an opening above the table surface. Control means are provided to control the operation of the sewing apparatus as well as to feed the material to be sewn along each direction in which a seam is to be formed. Sensing means are provided to sense the fact that a seam has been completed. Also, means are provided which clamp the material to the table after each seam is sewn. The control means further include means to rotate the sewing apparatus and align it in such a way that when the material is again fed to the sewing apparatus, the latter sews a successive seam along a different selected direction.

Heading D1G A sewing machine comprises a toothed wheel co-axial with the needle and engageable with the correspondingly toothed or corrugated rim of a template, rotation of the wheel thereby moving the template for stitching along a line defined by the shape of the template. Part of the upper surface of the sewing machine base 21 has inlaid strips 22 of polyvinyl chloride containing magnetised barium ferrite particles. Said strips are covered by a thin transparent sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene to reduce friction between it and a workpiece 20. Resting on the latter is a sheet steel template 24 having a roughened under surface and an upstanding corrugated rim 25 shaped to the required form of seam. Rim 25 engages a toothed wheel 32 journalled on a hollow boss 33 depending from a bar 29 secured to base 21 by bolts 30 and a spacer 31. The lower end of boss 33 is rounded and engages the workpiece lightly to serve as a presser foot. Toothed wheel 32 engages an idler gear 27 journalled on a bar 28 adjustably secured to bar 29, and gear 27 engages a driving gear 26. A bar 35, pivoted on boss 33, is biased by a spring 36 to engage a roller 34, mounted eccentrically on a pin 37 carried by bar 35, with rim 25 in opposition to toothed wheel 32. The needle passes axially through boss 33 to form a seam 40 parallel with rim 25. The rate of feed may be varied by changing the size of gear 26 and adjusting the position of gear 27. The machine may be started automatically when rim 25 is introduced between toothed wheel 32 and roller 34 by the actuation of a microswitch to control a solenoid air valve for controlling a pneumatic cylinder operating the clutch and brake of a conventional clutch motor. In a modification, the strips 22 and the idler gear 27 are omitted, and a magnet rests centrally on the base of template 24.

Method and system for attaching a pocket to a portion of a garment

A system and method of fastening a pocket to a portion of a garment is described. Garment working stations are arranged in a preselected manner about a platform with predetermined accurate alignment of their individual garment working operations. Each garment portion is automatically deposited on the platform and aligned with an orientation selected to bring its desired working areas with precision opposite the garment working stations. A garment portion indexer is employed which clamps the panel to preserve its automatically obtained alignment effectively throughout the working operations. The indexer accurately indexes the aligned panel step by step to each of the stations continuously retaining its grip until that is no longer needed. Pockets are deposited on the platform and automatically aligned with a selected indexed panel position. The pocket is attached to the panel at a precisely determined panel location after being transferred thereto with an automatic actuated transfer device. Pocket manipulation is uniquely performed at a garment station to precisely align pocket and panel parts as well as prepare completion of pocket attachment. Aesthetic completion of panel to pocket assembly is obtained with accurate bar tack operations, assuring a repetitively neat product. An automatic panel dart forming station is shown for the attachment of a rear garment panel for a pair of trousers to a back pocket. High speed pocket to garment attachments are obtained.
