A method of washing fabric articles in a tunnel washer that includes moving the fabric articles from the intake of the washer to the discharge of the washer and through multiple modules or sectors. Liquid can be counter flowed in the washer interior along a flow path that is generally opposite the direction of travel of the fabric articles in order to rinse the fabric articles. While counterflow rinsing, the flow rate can be maintained at a selected flow rate or flow pressure head. One or more booster pumps can optionally be employed to maintain constant counterflow rinsing flow rate or constant counterflow rinsing pressure head. A source of fresh, make-up water can be provided to adjust conductivity. Conductivity is monitored in at least one of the modules. Conductivity of fluid in the discharged fabric articles is monitored. Make up water is added to one or more modules before if the conductivity of water in the discharged fabric articles exceeds a threshold value. In one embodiment, one of the modules is an empty pocket that is drained of fluid when rinsing with counterflowing liquid.

Washed laundry that has been rinsed still contains bound acidic or basic rinsing liquid. In many cases this must be neutralized. This used to be conducted on the basis of values gained from experience, which generally resulted in only partial neutralization. Herein, sample liquid is taken continuously from the neutralization chamber ( 18 ) and, after the fine filtration of same, the pH value of the sample liquid is continuously measured by a pH value measurement device ( 31 ). In this manner a pH value control system is possible which ensures an automatic and complete neutralization of the rinse liquid still bound in the laundry after rinsing.

A method of washing fabric articles in a tunnel washer that includes moving the fabric articles from the intake of the washer to the discharge of the washer and through multiple modules or sectors. Liquid can be counter flowed in the washer interior along a flow path that is generally opposite the direction of travel of the fabric articles. A dual use zone includes multiple of the modules or sectors. In a dual use zone, a module or modules can be used to both wash and thereafter rinse the fabric articles. While counterflow rinsing, the flow rate can be maintained at a selected flow rate or flow pressure head. One or more booster pumps can optionally be employed to maintain constant counterflow rinsing flow rate or constant counterflow rinsing pressure head. During rinsing, extracted water or reuse water is first used to rinse followed by a clean water rinse.

A method of washing fabric articles in a continuous batch tunnel washer , comprising the steps of:a) providing a continuous batch tunnel washer having an interior, an intake, a discharge, a plurality of modules, and a volume of liquid;b) moving the fabric articles from the intake to the discharge and through each of the modules in sequence;c) wherein in step “b” multiple of the modules are dual use modules that function as both wash modules and rinse modules;d) adding a washing chemical to the volume of liquid in the dual use zone;e) during a first period of a particular batch time the fabric articles are spending in a particular dual use module not counter flowing a rinsing liquid in the washer interior for a selected time interval after step “d”;f) after step “e” during a second period of time of the particular batch time the fabric articles are spending in the particular dual use module counter flowing a rinsing liquid in the washer interior along a flow path that is generally opposite the direction of travel of the fabric articles in steps “b” and “c” and in one or more of the dual use modules; andg) using a water extraction device to remove excess liquid after step “e”.2.
