Textiles are treated with a substantive fluorocarbon compound as an aqueous solution during household laundering. Example 11 specifies the use of a composition comprising sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium silicate, nonyl phenolethylene oxide, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, perfluorosulphonamide acrylic latex, and distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. Other anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants may be incorporated.ALSO:Textile articles are treated with 0.1-10% of a substantive fluorocarbon compound as an aqueous solution during or after household laundering, preferably during rinsing. The articles may be of cotton, wool, nylon, cellulose acetate, or polyester. The fluorocarbon compound contains at least three carbon atoms and at least 70% of the hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine, the following being exemplified: perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid-chrome complex, perfluorooctylacrylate polymer, perfluorosulphonamide acrylic latex, perfluorooctanamidomethyl pyridinium acetate, and perfluorooctanamidomethyl propyl diethyl ammonium bromide. Other exemplified constituents of the solution are: urea-formaldehyde, methylated urea-formaldehyde urea-formaldehyde-guanidine, dimethylol ethylene urea dimethoxymethyl urea, triazine-formaldehyde dicyandiamide-formaldehyde, polyvinyl acetate, octyl phenoxy polyethylene oxide; paraffin wax; aluminium hydrate, chlorhydroxide; acetate; zirconyl acetate; tris aziridinyl phosphine oxide; distearyl dimethyl, octylphenoxy-ethoxymethyl benzyl dimethyl, dihydroxyisopropyl methyl hydrogenated tallow ammonium chloride.
