Black, inert, heat-resistant, non-carbonized organic fibres and fabrics are made by a controlled thermochemical transformation of corresponding fibrous regenerated cellulose fibre, fabric, yarn or tow starting material without loss of fibre identity by impregnating the fibres of the starting material with a water-soluble salt of a strong acid and a nitrogenous base sufficient to bring about the transformation and heating the salt-impregnated material in a dry state at a temperature of 450-600 DEG F. until it has passed beyond the point of lowest fibre strength and has regained a tensile strength equal to at least 20% of the original fibre strength. The fibrous material may be held under tension during processing. A nitrogenous phosphate salt may be used for the impregnation. Moreover, this method introduces a fully-automatic continuous rolling-suction tentering and setting machine to control the pressure of the padder, the drying temperature, the air volume of the fan and the speed of chains, which reduces the manual intervention, achieving a highly-automatic printing and dyeing process. The reflectivity at four points on both sides of the standard carbon black soiled fabric according to the invention is 95% or more.

Animal fibres or tanned vegetable fibres are dyed by treatment with nitrous acid and metallic salts or oxides in the cold or at temperatures not exceeding 80 DEG C. The metallic compounds may be previously fixed to the fibre and in this case the nitrous acid may be applied as a vapour (generated by hydration of nitrosylsulphuric acid or by treatment of nitric acid with reducing agents such as starch or arsenious acid) so as to produce either dyed or printed effects. In addition with vegetable fibres the tannins may be either fixed to the fibre or in the dyebath. Examples are given of the dyeing of wool or silk with sodium nitrite and copper sulphate with or without acetic or other acid to obtain pink to purple shades and of the dyeing of tanned cotton reddish-brown with sodium nitrite, zinc sulphate and sulphuric acid. The amalgam may be prepared by immersing bars, wires, or shavings of the metal in a solution of mercury cyanide or oxycyanide and preferably heating. Fabrics or fleeces made from regenerated cellulose filaments or fibres made by (1) the process of the Parent Specification, the salt being of Fe or Pb, are thereafter (2) reacted in the presence of OH- ions with a salt of a heavy metal having greater affinity for S= in alkaline environment than Fe or Pb; and (3) the Fe or Pb hydroxides are then reconverted by S= to the sulphide; these reactions being repeated any number of times. In step (1) viscose containing a dissolved compound of As or Sb is extruded into a bath containing H2SO4, Na2SO4, and optionally ZnSO4; the filaments or fibres are then treated with aqueous Fe or Pb salts which react with the As or Sb sulphides to form Fe or Pb sulphides. With PbS, the salt in reaction (2) may be of Hg, Ag or Cu whereas with FeS, salts of Pb, Sn, Cd, Co, Ni and Zn may also be used. Preferably the salt in step (2) is of a metal with an amphoteric hydroxide, e.g. Cd, Zn, Cu or Ag. The reaction (2) may be performed in ammoniacal solution, the salts used being ammonium or amine complexes. Strong base/weak acid buffer salts, e.g. sodium acetate, may be present, and the heavy metal salts may be acetates. In step (3), the source of S= may be H2S gas or sulphide solutions. The heavy-metal content of the treated material may be more than 50% by weight. The textiles obtained, which are water-repellent, may be used for protective clothing for high energy radiation.

Yarns, threads, &c., treating with liquids, gases, and vapours.-Differential lustre or colour effects or both are produced on textile fibre yarns, for example of silk, wool, cotton or artificial silk, by treating the fibres of which a part has a content of free sulphur whilst another part is free from sulphur, with an agent, rather than vat dyestuff, which produces a differential lustre or colour effect as between the sulphured and unsulphured portions. A precipitate of sulphur may be produced on the< >fibres on parts of the fibres by impregnation with an alkali metal or ammonium polysulphide and treatment with acid, or by impregnation with a solution of sulphur in an organic solvent followed by evaporation of the solvent; or alternatively, a fabric may be woven so that the weft is of unbleached viscose silk (containing sulphur), and the warp of bleached viscose silk. The colour effects may be obtained by treating the fabric so obtained with a dyestuff, such as Indanthrene rose, which produces a colour on the sulphured portion different from that on the unsulphured part; or the sulphur in the material may be converted into coloured compounds by solutions of metal salts or into colourless metal compounds, and in either case the metal sulphide either as such may act as a mordant for an organic dyestuff, in such cases if desired, the metal mordant may be subequently removed. Fibres, leathers, hairs and the like are coloured by reduction in a slightly acid hot or cold medium of ferricyanides or of ferrocyanides in presence of traces of acid mercury sulphate, and particularly of Denige's reagent, obtained by dissolving the yellow oxide in sulphuric acid. Suitable reducing agents are sugar, glucose, formaldehyde, formic acid, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, naphthols, aniline salts, dextrin, soluble starch, tannins and saponins such as Saponaria vaccaria, French soap-worts or Panama wood. The reducing agents may be previously fixed to the fibre or added to the bath. An example shows the dyeing of wool, silk or cotton in a bath of sugar, acid mercury sulphate and potassium ferricyanide to obtain a blue. With hot treatment greens are obtained in the first stage. Ferrocyanides yield lighter colours and may be employed together with ferricyanides and preferably also ferric chloride or sulphate.

The application relates to the production of a soiled fabric, and more particularly to a method of manufacturing a standard carbon black soiled fabric for performance testing of washing machines. Water is adopted herein as the solvent to prepare a soil, which renders this method safe, environmentally friendly and economical. A method of manufacturing a standard carbon black soiled fabric , comprising:(1) adding 2000 mL of water to a first beaker; adding 49-52 g of gum acacia powder; shearing the first reaction mixture by a shear emulsifying machine at 3000-5000 rpm for 15-20 min; adding 18-20 g of ink; shearing the first reaction mixture by the shear emulsifying machine at 3000-5000 rpm for 10-15 min; and then heating the first reaction mixture in a water bath to 90° C.;(2) adding 1000 mL of water to a second beaker; heating the second beaker in the water bath to 90° C.; adding 14-16 g of lecithin; shearing the second reaction mixture by the shear emulsifying machine at 3000-5000 rpm for 10-15 min; adding 6-8 g of castor oil; and shearing the second reaction mixture by the shear emulsifying machine at 3000-5000 rpm for 10-20 min;(3) slowly pouring the second reaction mixture obtained in step (2) into the first reaction mixture obtained in step (1) to produce a third reaction mixture; heating the third reaction mixture in the water bath at 90° C.; and shearing the third reaction mixture by the shear emulsifying machine at 3000-5000 rpm for 30-40 min to produce a stable carbon black soil;(4) threading an original fabric to ...

Micro-particles of transition metals or their compounds can be generated as an integral part of a textile fiber by first attaching a nucleating agent to the fiber, and then adding a solution of metal ions. The ions are reduced by the nucleating agent in the fiber, and micro-particles are generated in or on the fiber. Because of the strong color signal resulting from a low concentration of metal micro-particles, the method is cost effective even when using gold or titanium ions. Various colors were generated by changing the size and spacing of the micro-particles, the metal or metal complex used, and the characteristics of the textile. The dyed textile displayed colors ranging from pink, red, purple, yellow, orange, peach, brown, gold, silver, grey, green, and black. These colors resisted bleaching by either chemicals or light.

The mineral compound that is produced according to the invention is linked to the substrate, is stable and long-lasting or permanent, and is immobilized or insolubilized in the substrate. The mineral compound is bound or contained within and on the substrate of the substrate, so it may be said to be ingrained in the fibers or matrix of the substrate, or embedded within the substrate. The desired effect is preferably a color. A wide variety of metal salts may be used depending on the desired effect. The oxygen source is preferably a peroxide, and the substrate is preferably a cellulose product such as wood, cotton, or paper; leather; or masonry. The invention contemplates methods of treating substrates, treatment kits, and treated products. With wood products, the invention provides a water-based stain of low toxicity useful for soft woods.

According to the invention, a metal salt and an oxygen source are applied to penetrate or impregnate a suitable substrate sequentially in effective amounts so as to react in contact with the substrate and produce a mineral compound fixed within the surface of the substrate. The inventive combination of a mutually compatible metal salt, oxygen source, and substrate brings about an in situ reaction, and modifies the substrate to bring about a lasting desired effect. The mineral compound that is produced according to the invention is linked to the substrate, is stable and long-lasting or permanent, and is immobilized or insolubilized in the substrate. The mineral compound is bound or contained within and on the substrate of the substrate, so it may be said to be ingrained in the fibers or matrix of the substrate, or embedded within the substrate. The desired effect is preferably a color. A wide variety of metal salts may be used depending on the desired effect. The oxygen source is preferably a peroxide, and the substrate is preferably a cellulose product such as wood, cotton, or paper; leather; or masonry. The invention contemplates methods of treating substrates, treatment kits, and treated products. With wood products, the invention provides a water-based stain of low toxicity useful for soft woods.
