[Class 15 (ii)] Protein fibres, e.g., wool, silk or artificial fibres from casein, are dyed level shades, fast to washing and to light, by subjecting them to the action of (a) nitrous acid or a nitrite, (b) a salt of a mordanting metal, and (c) a compound, not containing a phenolic or aromatic amino group, capable of forming a complex compound with the metal. The reagents (a), (b) and (c) may be applied simultaneously or successively in two or three stages. Specified mordanting metals are aluminium, chromium, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium and uranium and specified complex-forming compounds are potassium cyanide, ethylenediamine, glycine, thioxamide and dimethyl glyoxime. A mordant dyestuff may be applied for shading purposes, additional mordant being, in this case, unnecessary.
