This invention provides a mechanical device to balance the tension difference between multiple wires in the pay-off system to produce a steel cord with constant tension and satisfactory quality.

There is described a hoisting system and method of lifting that make use of a particular fibre rope. The fibre rope includes a plurality of magnets that are embedded within the fibre rope and spaced apart along the rope with a known axial distance between the magnets. The system may include a fibre rope hoisting speed sensor, and a magnetic field sensor that can sense the presence of the magnetic field of the embedded magnets. Using the sensors, the hoisting speed of the rope may be determined by: measuring the time between the passing of consecutive magnets by using the magnetic field sensor; calculating the distance between consecutive magnets using the hoisting speed sensor and the measured time between the passing of the consecutive magnets; and comparing the calculated distance between the magnets with an original, predefined distance between the magnets.

A belt containing steel cords, the steel cords containing strands made of steel filaments wherein the largest diameter filaments are at least intermittently positioned at the radially outer side of the steel cord. Such a configuration can be obtained by using steel cord constructions wherein the thickest filaments are positioned outside of the steel cord which is contrary to the current practice. In a further embodiment the largest diameter filaments fill up some or all of the valleys of the strands at their radially outer side. These monofilaments thus have the same lay length and direction as the strands in the steel cord. The advantage of putting the largest filaments at the outside is that they will break first and thus will be readily detectable by electrical, magnetic or visual means. Changes in spacing are indicative of stretching of the rope, and thereby degradation of the rope.

In a particular embodiment, the targets are formed from a magnetically permeable material and the monitoring device responds to changes in the magnetic field as the target passes the monitoring device. In another embodiment, the targets are formed from material that reflects electromagnetic energy. In this embodiment, the monitoring device emits electromagnetic energy and is sensitive to the energy that is reflected back from the target. A method to inspect the hoisting ropes includes the steps of positioning the monitoring device proximate to the hoisting rope, moving the hoisting rope relative to the device, and monitoring the targets to determine the spacing between targets. Changes in spacing are indicative of stretching of the rope, and thereby degradation of the rope.

The sensors (7) are designed to determine at least one physical characteristic of the load-bearing element (3) in a region locally adjacent to the respective sensor (7) and to output a signal (11) which indicates the determined physical characteristic. For example, a sensor (7) may determine a local expansion, a local bending, a local acceleration, a locally acting force, a local temperature and/or an electrical conductivity at, in or through the supporting means (1). The state of the supporting means (1) can thereby be determined not only as an average for the entire supporting means (1) but with regard to multiple positions along the length of the supporting means (1), which can inter alia allow improved statements to be made regarding a discard criteria of the supporting means (1).
