A method and apparatus for the removal of light material from a fiber suspension particularly suitable for removing light compressible plastic material such as expanded polystyrene and similar material from the short circulation of a paper machine. The plastic particles containing fiber suspension is divided in a degassing tank into reject and accept flows by the assistance of vacuum. The light reject containing flow is separated from the main flow by an overflow device and recirculated to the wire pit or corresponding device. A separation device such as a vibrating screen, vibrating drum, curved screen or inverted cyclone is provided within the light reject flow return duct for removing the detrimental plastic or other light material from the short circulation and for preventing the accumulation thereof in the wire pit.

Method and means is disclosed for treating pulp, in particular fiber suspensions of the pulp and paper industry, and more specifically, for improvement of pulp mill screening plants, to make their operation more effective and to reduce the need for equipment to reduce the investment costs etc. In the known screening process it is usually desirable to increase the pulpconsistency after the screening to a range of 10 to 15% for storing or after-treatment. It is also desirable to handle rejects by either refining or some other method, but usually at consistency which is higher than that of screening. In other words, the pulp flows always have to be thickened after screening. The present invention comprises a method and means for screening pulp in a pressurized, closed space by means of screens in a consistency range of 1 to 5% and by means of centrifugal cleaners in a consistency below 1%. The various pulp screening and/or cleaning stages are effected in a pressurized state in a closed space in the screening plant. Access of air to the treated pulp is prevented by carrying out the thickening stages in a pressurized state, at the initial pressure corresponding to that of the preceding screening and/or cleaning stage.

The cooking fluid may have a relatively high effective alkali concentration. The cooked pulp may exhibit very low residual hemicelluloses and a kappa number within an optimal range.

An apparatus for sorting a fibrous suspension for removing both heavy weight and light weight particulate impurities is disclosed. An antechamber is positioned above a main chamber. Fibrous stock suspension is inletted tangentially to the antechamber and moves down to the main chamber. An annular rotor in the main chamber creates a vortex of the fibrous stock suspension, which drives the heavier particulate impurities to the side wall of the main chamber and moves the lighter weight impurities toward the center of the vortex. The heavier weight impurities fall to the bottom of the main chamber from which they are removed. The lighter weight impurities are removed by a drainage line extending toward the center of the antechamber. Above the rotor is a strainer and the rotor cooperates with the strainer to drive purified fluid suspension to an annular outlet chamber surrounding the bottom of the antechamber and from there into an outlet line.

This is made possible by the present invention, which relates to a method of producing said pulps in which finely divided lignocellulosic material is defibrated after pretreatment and the resultant pulp is bleached in the form of a suspension with bleaching agent that increases the anionic charge of the pulp fibres, whereafter the pulp suspension is cleaned and then possibly further treated, for instance bleached, characterised in that the defibration is effected with the aid of a) a refiner that has counter-rotating refining discs while using an extra high temperature (HTDD), or b) a refiner that has a single rotating refining disc(s) having a single refining zone or two parallel refining zones, while using an extra high temperature and while rotating the disc(s) at an extra high speed (RTS), and in that the cleaning treatment comprises first screeming the pulp suspension and them hydrocyclone cleaning said suspension, wherewith the reject obtained with each cleaning process is treated individually and the treated reject is returned to the advancing pulp suspension.

An improved process is disclosed for removing "stickies" from waste paper which contains hot-melt and pressure-sensitive adhesives and lattices to produce high quality (high brightness, little to no dirt content) pulp with little or no fiber loss. The process involves attachment of sticky particles in the waste paper pulp to a magnetic carrier material with the help of an agglomeration agent followed by removal of the attached sticky particles by magnetic separation. The magnetic treatment preferably is conducted at ambient or greater temperature, at neutral to alkaline pH and at a low pulp consistency. Agglomeration and magnetite addition, followed by exposure of the repulped waste paper to a magnetic field provides near complete sticky removal over exposure to the magnetic field without such pre-treatment.

In a papermaking process metallic foreign objects are removed from a fibrous suspension (S) by magnetic (1) action. The incoming suspension passes along a tube containing a rotating cylindrical magnet that is surrounded by a fixed helical blade, or vice versa. Metal particles are attracted to the cylinder and are pushed by the helical blade towards trap (4). On passing beyond the zone of magnetic influence, metal particles are released and fall into a trap (4). The relative motion between the magnet and helical blade is driven by a motor. The assembly is operated continuously or intermittently. During release of the magnetic components, the tube is back-flushed. During normal operation the suspension speed is less than 1 m/s with respect to the magnet. The magnetic separator extends into the base of the suspension reservoir.

With the improved technique, the accepts from the first stage bank of centrifugal cleaners may be combined with the accepts from the second stage bank of centrifugal cleaners and fed forward to a thickening device, for example. The technique is also suitably employed for removing stickies from material which has already been screened with a fine screen.

Method and means is disclosed for treating pulp, in particular fiber suspensions of the pulp and paper industry, and more specifically, for improvement of pulp mill screening plants, to make their operation more effective and to reduce the need for equipment to reduce the investment costs etc. In the known screening process it is usually desirable to increase the pulpconsistency after the screening to a range of 10 to 15% for storing or after-treatment. It is also desirable to handle rejects by either refining or some other method, but usually at consistency which is higher than that of screening. In other words, the pulp flows always have to be thickened after screening. The present invention comprises a method and means for screening pulp in a pressurized, closed space by means of screens in a consistency range of 1 to 5% and by means of centrifugal cleaners in a consistency below 1%. The various pulp screening and/or cleaning stages are effected in a pressurized state in a closed space in the screening plant. Access of air to the treated pulp is prevented by carrying out the thickening stages in a pressurized state, at the initial pressure corresponding to that of the preceding screening and/or cleaning stage.

An apparatus for sorting a fibrous suspension for removing both heavy weight and light weight particulate impurities is disclosed. An antechamber is positioned above a main chamber. Fibrous stock suspension is inletted tangentially to the antechamber and moves down to the main chamber. An annular rotor in the main chamber creates a vortex of the fibrous stock suspension, which drives the heavier particulate impurities to the side wall of the main chamber and moves the lighter weight impurities toward the center of the vortex. The heavier weight impurities fall to the bottom of the main chamber from which they are removed. The lighter weight impurities are removed by a drainage line extending toward the center of the antechamber. Above the rotor is a strainer and the rotor cooperates with the strainer to drive purified fluid suspension to an annular outlet chamber surrounding the bottom of the antechamber and from there into an outlet line.

A fiber suspension, such as in a pulp mill, is treated in a manner which minimizes both the investment and the operating costs associated with a screening plant. A single pump has an outlet connected to a knotter and primary and secondary screening stages so that the pump provides substantially the sole motive force to the pulp moving it through the knotter and screening stages. The knotter and screening stages are provided in a common housing with the knotter vertically above the screening stages, and the screening stages one above the other. A single motor may be provided to rotate rotatable elements associated with the knotter and screening stages. The knotter may be connected to a knot washer external of the housing by a valued conduit less than two meters in length, and the secondary screening stage can be connected to a tertiary screening stage exterior of the housing by a valued conduit less than two meters long. Rejects from the knot washer and secondary screening stage may be recycled to the pulp inlet, and dilution water may be introduced where necessary.
