Applying liquid to a moving web

Apparatus for applying a liquid coating onto a moving web has one or preferably two rotatable rollers. In the two roller embodiment both rollers lie on the same plane which is at or near the horizontal. The two roller embodiment positions the rollers adjacent each so as to form a press nip between them. The moving web makes contact with one of the rollers, or the single roller along an extended circumferential arc of the roller. Adjacent each roller is a supply apparatus for depositing a liquid on to a portion of the roller jacket not in contact with the web. Wiper rods are associated with each supply apparatus and are biased against the jacket of the roller to make the coating of liquid uniform. Surplus liquid is used to wash the rollers to remove web fibers and glue and pigment particulate to avoid contamination thereby of the supply apparatus and wiper rods. The surplus liquid and fibers and particulate are collected in sumps.

Starch solution is applied to the surface of a paper sheet web by means of a two roll press and a coating apparatus for each roll. The web is passed between the two rolls beginning at an entry nip where starch film coated on each roll surface is pressed against both sides of the web for penetration thereinto. The coating apparatus comprises a starch applicator for supplying a large excess of starch to the outer surface of the roll and an adjustable doctor blade means for metering a starch film on the roll surface for passage to the nip. The starch applicator may take the form of a fountain or applicator roll arrangement. This system permits coating at high web speeds of 3,000 to 4,000 feet per minute and permits a treatment starch solution to be of lowsolids and low-viscosity as is desirable.

This disclosure is directed to apparatus for periodically purging contaminants from a coating liquid during a coating operation and, more particularly, for cleaning a doctor blade of an adhesive coater, the apparatus including a container having an open bottom defining with a surface of a rotatable transfer roll and a doctor blade a gap of a predetermined size which doctors the coating liquid or adhesive to a desired thickness prior to the application thereof to an article which is to be coated, and means for periodically increasing the predetermined size of the gap and returning the increased gap size to the predetermined size whereby particles otherwise incapable of passing through the gap when of the predetermined size will pass through the gap when of the increased size to thus maintain a relatively clean bath of liquid throughout a coating operation.

A uniform film of coating is delivered onto a substrate at high speed by a film applicator, such as a coater apparatus for a papermaking machine, which has a static converging wedge, an adjustable converging wedge, and an extraction channel located between the two wedges. As a unit, the film applicator minimizes the hydrodynamic flow instabilities, as well as reduces flow variations associated with a nonuniform feed and a dynamic contact line. The film applicator also removes entrained air and excess coating from the application zone in order to improve the flow stability and machine runnability.

Apparatus and method for applying a liquid to a moving web

Apparatus for applying a liquid coating onto a moving web has one or preferably two rotatable rollers. In the two roller embodiment both rollers lie on the same plane which is at or near the horizontal. The two roller embodiment positions the rollers adjacent each so as to form a press nip between them. The moving web makes contact with one of the rollers, or the single roller along an extended circumferential arc of the roller. Adjacent each roller is a supply apparatus for depositing a liquid on to a portion of the roller jacket not in contact with the web. Wiper rods are associated with each supply apparatus and are biased against the jacket of the roller to make the coating of liquid uniform. Surplus liquid is used to wash the rollers to remove web fibers and glue and pigment particulate to avoid contamination thereby of the supply apparatus and wiper rods. The surplus liquid and fibers and particulate are collected in sumps.
