A front loader (12) is provided and is suitable for attachment to a tractor (10) which has an engine compartment (16) disposed forwardly of a cab (18) and transversely centred on a longitudinal axis. The front loader (12) is detachable from the tractor (10) and comprises a pair of lift arms (36), when in use, each being pivotally mounted relative to the tractor at respective pivot points (38) which are transversely spaced either side of the engine compartment. The lift arms, when lowered, extend generally forwardly and converge in front of the engine compartment to attach to a single, transversely centred, telescopic boom (40) which is disposed in front of the engine compartment (16). By providing a front loader having a telescopic boom wherein the front loader is simply detachable by a quick release mechanism, the versatility of a tractor can be increased in addition to delivering improved productivity.

ABSTRACT An improved material handling apparatus includes a base boom section which is rotatably supported in a cradle and a second boom section which is telescopically received within the base boom section and is movable axially relative to the base boom section. A force transmitting assembly is provided to trans-mit rotational drive forces from a tilt motor to the base boom section to effect rotational movement of the two boom sections about their longitudinal axes. This force transmitting assembly also retains the base boom section against axial and radial move-ment relative to the cradle. The force transmitting assembly includes a single force transmitting member or body which is fixedly connected at one end portion to an end wall of the base boom section and is rotatable supported by a cradle mounted thrust bearing assembly. The thrust bearing assembly holds the single force transmitting member against axial movement to thereby re-tain the base boom section against axial movement. A gear seg-ment on the force transmitting member cooperates with a gear con-nected to the tilt motor which is disposed between an end wall of the base boom section and the cradle. Upon operation of the tilt motor, the force transmitting member rotates the two boom sections relative to the cradle. The force transmitting member is provided with fluid passages and manifold rings which conduct fluid to effect operation of another motor to extend and retract the two boom sections.

Apparatus for providing additional effective length to the telescoping boom of a material handling apparatus is provided. A pivotable boom cradle is supported on an upper structure of the material handling apparatus. The boom cradle pivotally supports the base boom section by means of front and rear cradle arms. Front and rear straps are provided to attach the boom to the cradle arms. In addition, front stop blocks are provided intermediate the length of the base boom section while rear stop blocks are provided adjacent the trailing end thereof. In normal operation, bolts secure the front stop blocks to the front portion of the boom cradle. When it is desired to operate with an additional entended length of the boom, the material handling implement is imbedded in the ground, the bolts securing the front stop blocks to the boom cradle are removed and the bolts securing the front and rear straps to their respective cradle arms are loosened. The boom is then retracted which effectively causes the base section thereof to move forward toward the material handling implement while sliding on the front and rear cradle arms until the rear stop blocks engage the rear cradle arm. The bolts removed from the front stop blocks are secured between the rear stop blocks and the rear cradle arm and the bolts on the front and rear securing straps are tightened thereby readying the material handling apparatus for operation with an additional length of boom.

A first hydraulic cylinder is coupled from the fixed boom to the pivot segment. A second hydraulic cylinder is coupled from the lever segment to a retractable outer boom. The second hydraulic cylinder retracts and combines with the extension force of the first hydraulic cylinder across the linkage member to provide a retraction force to the outer boom.

When the tilting moment reaches a threshold value movement of the load handling apparatus 6, 7 may be restricted or prevented. The warning indicator (17 fig. 3) may be visual or audible. The tilting moment threshold value may also be dependent upon the deployment of stabilizers S. The signal representative of tilting moment may be provided by a load cell measuring the load on an axle 5. The tilting moment threshold value may vary with the position of the load handling apparatus 6, 7 linearly (fig 4), linearly between two constant values (fig 5) or between two constant values with a step change (fig 6).

Electric controls in the excavator cab connect to the pump which selectively directs fluid to a motor which rotates a first gear which meshes with a second gear fixed to the carrier vehicle drive shaft. In alternate embodiments, the motor connects to a power take-off on the transmission. Carrier steering, braking, and throttle functions are also remotely controlled at the excavator cab through a combination of electric and hydraulic controls with the electric wires extending from the electric controls in the excavator cab, through a slip ring on the center pin assembly and to the respective function controls at various sites on the carrier vehicle. There are thus no hydraulic lines extending from the excavator to the carrier vehicle. The present invention is discussed primarily in connection with a carrier vehicle/excavator combination although other applications are also discussed.
