A block construction system includes interlocking, self-aligning blocks that can be used to construct structures with mortarless joints. A typical block has a top face that is formed with a raised, substantially flat horizontal portion that extends between a pair of longitudinally aligned rounded edges. Longitudinally aligned horizontal stop surfaces extend from each rounded edge. A bottom face of the block is formed with a pair of longitudinally aligned stop surfaces and a substantially flat portion that is positioned between and recessed from the stop surfaces. For two stacked blocks, the recessed portion of the top block receives and engages the raised portion of the bottom block preventing lateral movement of one block relative to the other. To interlock adjacent blocks on a common course, one end face of each block is formed with a vertically aligned tongue and the other end face is formed with a corresponding groove.

A masonry wall is formed of masonry block units abutted with one another in series within stacked rows. Each masonry block unit is a concrete body having two opposing exterior side walls defining respective portions of the assembly masonry wall. Vertical reinforcement channels are formed in the exterior side walls of each masonry block unit so as to be open laterally to the exterior. The reinforcement channels align with corresponding channels in the masonry block units in adjacent stacked rows to receive elongate reinforcement members, for example rebar, inserted laterally therein from the exterior surface of the assembly masonry wall. A bonding material can then be recessed laterally into the reinforcement channels so as to bond the reinforcement members to the masonry assembly.

In order to achieve an improved coefficient of thermal conductivity and to reduce the flank transmission, the invention proposes the combination of the following features: thickness of the webs ≦5 mm, ratio of the largest and smallest inside widths of the perforation cross-section is between 1:1 and 1:2.5, spacing of the perforation rows ≦22 mm, proportion of perforations ≧50% and apparent density of the brick material ≧1.5 kg/dm 3 . Hexagonal perforations, with corners directed towards the side walls, and a fibrous porosity agent are to be preferred. The abutment surfaces should be designed such that they are essentially in mirror symmetry with respect to one another, with the result that the protrusions bear against one another and the depressions respectively form a cavity together.

A building block is disclosed which is intended to be arranged in substantially horizontal layers stacked upon each other without the use of mortar. The upper and lower support surfaces of the blocks are wave-shaped in two perpendicular directions in such a manner that the wave-patterns in both directions have the same amplitude and periodicity and a constant wave section over their entire extension. Disclosed also is apparatus for manufacturing the blocks, comprising at least one mold which has a bottom surface having a wave-shape corresponding to that of the block and an upper edge profile corresponding to the wave-shape of the top of the block in the longitudinal direction of the block. Means is located above the mold for supplying a casting mass to the mold and a rotary and vertically movable roll is located above the mold for levelling out and smoothing the mass at the upper end of the mold. The roll has means for cooperating with the wave-shaped upper edge profile of the sidewalls of the mold, the roll having a profile corresponding to the desired wave-shape of the block in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the mold.

The present invention provides a heat insulation covering for a spherical storage tank such as an LNG tank or the like for storing an extremely low temperature liquid. The covering is constructed by using elongated panel-like heat insulating panels. A plurality of slit parts having a U-shaped cross section are formed along the longitudinal direction of a foam-resin heat insulating panel formed in an elongated panel-like configuration. In the slit part, a heat insulating material is inserted. The material has a sufficient expandability under extremely low temperatures. The heat insulating panel can be deformed along the curvature of the surface of the spherical tank. The heat insulation covering of the spherical tank is formed of the heat insulating panels which have an elongated configuration. With such a structure, only a few kinds of heat insulating panels need be prepared, which is favorable in terms of cost.

Two opposite ends of the block may be provided with parallel ribs and slots in asymmetric relation so that when two such blocks are arranged end-to-end a slot in each block accommodates a rib of the other block. Some blocks may have one flat end and a slot in one of its sides to accommodate the rib of another block when the two blocks are arranged to form a corner. All the blocks have cavities extending completely through them. A plurality of such blocks can be arranged end-to-end and one above the other, with the corrugations or sawteeth of each block meshing with the corrugations or sawteeth of another, to form a wall, and mortar or concrete is then poured into all the aligned cavities of the blocks.
